Time Trap

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Trek Animated Series: Season One: Time Trap
SUMMARY: While investigating the Delta Triangle (the Bermuda Triangle of space), the Enterprise is attacked by Klingons, and us trapped along with Captain Kor's ship, the Klothos. Inside the Triangle is a graveyard of lost ships, including the the first fast-than-light vessel (the Bonaventure), called "Elysia" by its inhabitants. Kirk and Kor are brought to the UN-like "Elysian Council", composed of countless races. They say there is no way out, but Kirk and Kor agree to cooperate with a scheme to escape using the combined power of their vessels. However, Kor also plans to destroy the Enterprise with a bomb. The Elysians inform Kirk of this, the day is saved, and the Enterprise and Klothos escape, leaving the Elysians happily behind.

Were they happy, though? I always wondered what they thought as they watched the Terrans and Klingons actually suceed. Did anyone start screaming, "We could have gone with them! But noooo...."

By Kail on Sunday, January 31, 1999 - 5:21 pm:

Actually I believe they had been there so long that they no longer wanted to leave. They felt they had built the perfect society. I think this was a pretty good episode, which like most of the others could have been better, but is still quite enjoyable if you overlook some flaws.

By Johnny Veitch on Friday, March 05, 1999 - 12:46 pm:

The stardate given at the beginning is 52.2, and later it`s 5267.6.

How does Kirk know the ship is Klingon? The Romulan`s use the same deisgn.

The Bonaventure looks like a sort of early Constitution-class starship. Shouldn`t it look like more of a Phoenix or DY-100 starship?

When the Klingon ship fires on the Enterprise, Kirk says to Sulu "Report, sir!" Sir?

There`s a Phylosian (from "The Infinite Vulcan") in the Elaysian conference room! They must have acchieved space travel pretty quickly! (and the stardate, even the 5267 one, is before that of "The Infinite Vulcan")

Can anyone give a list of the Star Trek aliens previously seen that sit on the council? Obviously I got a few such as the Orion girl and so on but if someone could detail it, much appreciated.

By Todd Pence on Monday, August 09, 1999 - 10:30 pm:

Romulan, Orion, Klingon, Kzinti, Andorian, Vendorian, Phylosian, Aquan, Vulcan, Tellerite, Terran and Gorn.

Not a nitpick, but an observation [and yes, I've told this to Curt Danhauser...who I'm sure you all know if you like TAS. Curt's TAS site is excellent].

The Human on the Council who wears a white uniform. It is widely believed that this is a Starfleet officer wearing a Starfleet uniform of before 2240...therefore before April [2245] or Pike [2250]. Did any of you know that?

Also, Jean Lorrah's TNG novel 'Survivors' has a front cover depicting this uniform...for no apparent reason.

By HAL 9000 on Thursday, February 22, 2001 - 4:22 am:

This episode was remade into Voyager's The Void.

By Todd Pence on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - 4:13 pm:

This episode is remarkably similar to a story featured in the original Gold Key comics. Gold Key issue #15, published in early 1972, featured the story "Museum At The End Of Time". In this story the Enterprise finds itself trapped in a timeless limbo universe along with the crews of many ships from all races and eras, just like in "Time Trap". Also like in "Time Trap" they end up cooperating with a Klingon ship and combining their power to break back into the real universe.

First of all, the region of space in which spaceships vanish is called the Delta Triangle. It's a cheap nod to the then fashionable "Bermuda Triangle/Devil's Triangle". (I say faasionable, because at that time, in the early Seventies, everyone was so fascinated with it.) But one thing I wonder is if you can really have a triangle in space? Space, I don't think, easily lends itself to a flat, one-dimensional field. There is "up" and "down" to consider. How high "up" does it go? How far "down"?

And is it Delta as in the Delta Quadrant? Nitpicking minds want to know.

"When the Klingon ship fires on the Enterprise, Kirk says to Sulu 'Report, sir!' Sir?" - Johnny Veitch

I didn't hear Kirk say that. I think you misheard it or my copy of the ep has been edited.

The Klingon battle cruiser in this ep has a cloaking device. I think this is the first time that we learn that the Klingons having cloaking devices on their ships.

Why is it that it isn't until Sulu does a 360° scan that the crew learns that they are surrounded by Klingons? Shouldn't they know that already?

The Klingon commander named Kuri sounds an awful lot like Sulu, doesn't he? And speaking of sounds like, the sound the Enterprise makes when it vaishes into the Delta Triangle is the transporter sound effect. The Klingon battle cruiser, Klothos did not make any such noise when it vanished.

As the Enterprise vanishes, some of Sulu's dialogue is in reverse.

Just before the Enterprise completely enters the Triangle, Sulu complains that his vision won't focus. He then passes out and falls to the floor. In the next shot, the Enterprise shimmers, then it's back to the Bridge. In the overhead shot of the Bridge. Mr. Sulu has magically recovered and is sitting in his chair again.

After his first meeting with the Elysian Council, Kirk, Spock and Scotty discuss their situation on the Bridge. They are the only ones on the Bridge. Why? Their present predicament is not such that the Bridge can be left unattended. If Kirk needs to talk privately with his two senior officers, there's always a briefing room or Kirk's quarters. And why isn't McCoy in on this? Kirk usually wants to get the opinion of his Chief Medical Officer.

The Klingons sabotage the Enterprise by leaving a Hot Tamale candy in the Engineering computer? Well, that's what it looks like to me. And other than being a bit spicy, would such a little thing cause that big an explosion?

Xerius hails the Enterprise to tell them of the Hot Tamale candy left by the Klingon. Kirk orders Spock and Scotty to get it. The First Officer and Chief Engineer are on the Bridge. The supository is in Engineering. Why doesn't Kirk just alert Engineering and let them handle it?

And why is Scotty on the Bridge? The Enterprise and Klothos are joined together and using each other's engines to operate. Shouldn't Mr. Scott be in Engieering instead?

By Benn on Saturday, February 08, 2003 - 10:43 pm:

That last sentence should read "Shouldn't Mr. Scott be in Engineering instead?" "Engineering" is misspelled. We regret the error.

By John A. Lang on Saturday, April 05, 2003 - 7:25 pm:

The Orion Slave Girl's skin changes from green to peach-colored back to green during the episode.

She is also missing her navel.

NANJAO: George Takei does the voice of Kor.
(Makes ya wonder where Colicos was)

By John A. Lang on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 5:38 am:

At one point, the Enterprise is riding "piggy-back" on the Klingon battle cruiser.
Is this possible?
The Enterprise weighs several metric tons...certainly such an attempt would crush the hull of the Klingon ship.

By ScottN on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 10:01 am:

There's no weight in space. Mass, yes, but no weight!

IIRC (and it's been a heck of a long time), Spock had to do some nasty CM calculations.

By Adam Bomb on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 - 8:29 am:

Makes ya wonder where Colicos was

Mr. Colicos was a busy man in the early '70's. Or, maybe he wasn't approached to do Kor's voice.

How does Kirk know the ship is Klingon? The Romulan`s use the same deisgn. - Johnny Veitch

Romulan vessels have a birdlike symbol on their engine struts. The Klingons have the three pronged symbol on theirs.

This is the second episode of TAS in which we learn of an area of space where ships have disappeared. The first ep was "The Lorelei Signal".

Kirk says starships have been disappearing in the Delta Triangle since "ancient times". They had starships back then? That made it out that far?

Kuri sure looks an awful like Koloth in "More Tribbles, More Troubles", doesn't he?

Considering the Klothos was close enough for the Enterprise to fire upon it, it shouldn't have taken the 10 plus seconds it took for the starship to reach the spot where the Klingon vessel vanished.

According to Scotty, the Bonaventure was the first ship to have warp drive installed. This is contradicted by Star Trek: First Contact. In that film, the Phoenix was the first ship to have warp drive installed.

When Kirk vanishes from the Bridge, he is surrounded by a yellow glow. However, when he materializes on Elysia, he does so in an Enterprise transporter glow.

Devras, the Orion woman, has a darker green tint to her sclerae. Which makes me think TPTB could have colored the sclerae of the other characters white had they so chosen to do so.

I'm confused. If time passes slowly for the Elysians, then how do they know when a century has gone by? And whether it's what outsiders would consider to be a century?

Normally, on the three screened viewer in the Conference Room, the same image is repeated in all three windows. However, if you watch carefully, when the Klothos backs up, its action is continued - not duplicated - in the other screen.

I thought Gabler was Scotty's engineering assistant. Now he's in Security? The man sure gets around.

Why does the little Hot Tamale candy capsule beep? I would think that any saboteur would not want their devices making any noises that might call attention to itself.

As the Enterprise and Klothos begin their journey out of the time trap, the Enterprise's antenna is black instead of red.

Why did the capsule explode after the two ships returned to normal space? It was ejected before the ships left the time trap space. It should have exploded there.

"Live long and prosper."

>According to Scotty, the Bonaventure was the first ship to have >warp drive installed. This is contradicted by Star Trek: First >Contact. In that film, the Phoenix was the first ship to have >warp drive installed.

And in the later animated episode "The Counter Clock Incident", the Enterprise herself is said to have been the first ship with warp drive.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Sunday, January 14, 2007 - 9:15 pm:

I find it VERY HARD to believe that the tiny "Hot Tamale Candy Capsule" can destroy the entire Enterprise. If it can, that capsule must pack quite a punch!

(Thanks Benn for the "Hot Tamale Candy Capsule" description)

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 6:42 pm:

WOW! That Orion Slave Girl is scantily clad! I'm surprised the censors allowed it on a Saturday Morning Cartoon! (Not that I minded seeing her that way, mind you)

By Some Guy on Thursday, July 19, 2007 - 8:21 am:

I don't understand how "time moves slowly" in the pocket universe. Everyone moves and talks normally, why would they live longer?

(I could understand time being out of sync- i.e. spending a day in the pocket doesn't have to mean you'd return a day later by an observer's standpoint. But living forever?)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, January 14, 2010 - 2:02 am:

During Spock's log, after Kirk is transported away, a shot shows the Enterprise & Klothos, but not any of the other ships.

After leaving the pocket universe the Enterprise is behind the Klothos, but the Klothos scanner shows the back end of the Enterprise.

By Mike on Monday, September 20, 2010 - 6:17 am:

Was the Klingon woman who McCoy asked to dance with the same one who planted the "Hot Tamale Candy Capsule" on board the Enterprise? If so,how did she get over there so quickly unnoticed? I say unnoticed because at that point all of the work being done to prepare the Enterprise & Klothos for their escape appeared to be completed. So why was that Klingon woman back over on the Enterprise, where was security? This would have been the perfect opportunity for the Klingons to use their Stasis weapon on the Enterprise as seen in the "More Tribbles,More Troubles" episode.Once the weapon is used by a ship, that ship is drained of power & helpless. But here we have 2 more Klingon ships at full power ready, willing & able to attack the Enterprise.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Sunday, December 02, 2018 - 8:53 am:

Uhura says that a message from them will take 3 weeks to reach the nearest starbase. This means they are far away from Federation space. Could the Bonaventure really have venture this far with what was probably a much less powerful warp drive?

Klingon commander Kuri looks a lot like the captain Koloth we saw in the epsisode More Tribbles, more Troubles.

Anyone know if the insectoid council member was used as a basis for the Xindi insectoids in Star Trek: Enterprise?
