TAS ON DVD

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Trek Animated Series: The Animated Sink (AKA Yet Another Sink): TAS ON DVD
By John A. Lang on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 - 7:35 am:

YIPPEE! TAS is coming to DVD in 2005...

News from "Rumor Mill":

Well... we've suspected it was going to happen (and we've been saying it ought to happen for a while now), but industry sources are finally starting to hint to us to expect Paramount to release seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise and the complete Star Trek: The Animated Series on DVD in 2005

WARP SPEED ON THOSE DVDS!

By Kail on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 - 6:58 pm:

Not only will TAS be released on DVD, but they are planning actor and writer commentaries. Cool!

By Benn on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 - 10:53 pm:

Bring it on.

Live long and prosper.

By John A. Lang on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 4:32 am:

Bad news, everyone.

TAS has been pushed back to 2006. *SIGH* :(

By Benn on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 10:41 am:

Tarim. That suxxors.

Live long and prosper.

By Adam Bomb on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 1:13 pm:

Try this.

By John A. Lang on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 1:21 pm:

Yeah, yeah! That's what they said last year.

I'll believe it when I see it at Amazon.com

By John-Boy on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 4:54 pm:

Yea because Amazon.com has never been wrong!

By Adam Bomb on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 9:30 pm:

Amazon can be and is wrong about DVD releases. It had the third season set of Once And Again listed for about two weeks after I was notified (by the guys at TV Shows on DVD.com) that the set was indefinitely delayed, and other on-line retailers had stopped taking pre-orders for it. Amazon still was, though, until the weekend of 11/12.

By Benn on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 11:13 pm:

Yawn. I can't get excited about this news. Tell me something concrete, then we'll see. "Maybes"? Those I'm not interested in.

Live long and prosper.

By John A. Lang on Sunday, December 18, 2005 - 5:32 am:

Still not holding my breath...

TVSHOWSONDVD.COM announced that Paramount (supposedly) verified that TAS will be coming out on DVD in late 2006 (Maybe September)

WE WILL SEE!

By Adam Bomb on Sunday, December 18, 2005 - 9:56 am:

Sounds like a done deal now. Or, maybe famous last words. Anyway, check this out.

By Adam Bomb on Friday, May 26, 2006 - 7:39 am:

Possible DVD set artwork.

By John A. Lang on Saturday, May 27, 2006 - 5:46 am:

YAWN! Yeah, yeah! I'll believe it when I see it on Amazon.Com

(No disrespect intended, Adam....I'm such SO TIRED of those empty promises by Paramount)

By Adam Bomb on Monday, May 29, 2006 - 1:36 am:

None taken, John. And, not just Paramount. Touchstone/Buena Vista Home Entertainment deserves slamming as well. They're releasing so much twaddle, and are STILL stalling on releasing the third season of my beloved Once And Again. (There I go again, but I'll never miss an opportunity to blast BVHE, until I have season three of O and A in my hands.)

By John A. Lang on Monday, May 29, 2006 - 8:17 pm:

ZZZZ! Now they're saying Nov. 21. HA!

By Adam Bomb on Monday, July 17, 2006 - 7:20 am:

Well, John ole' buddy, that date seems a done deal; a "Go!" And, TAS will be sold at a decent price, too - about $35. A bargain, when you consider that the two-episode DVD's went for $20. More here. (Now, if only Buena Vista would release season three of Once And Again, I'd be a very happy man.)

By John A. Lang on Monday, July 17, 2006 - 7:31 pm:

Yeah...November 21. All I can still say is "We'll see." I won't believe it until the DVD set is in my hands.

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - 8:13 am:

Officlal Announcement. Check out the packaging. It's great. SRP of $35, which means that Amazon may have it for about $30. Now, can we wait the four months?

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 - 8:21 am:

Then again, I'm on your side, John. I won't believe it until I have it in my hands either. Especially since Buena Vista had package artwork designed, commentary tracks recorded, and a release date announced for season three of Once And Again, and then pulled the rug out from under for that series' fans. Hope it's not deja vu all over again.

By Adam Bomb on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 7:39 am:

In an odd occurrence, Amazon has the package artwork displayed, yet as of today isn't taking pre-orders for it. As is usual with them, you can request to be notified when they will be taking pre-orders for it. (Season Three of Once And Again doesn't even get that, just a page saying that it's unavailable.)
And, John - to gauge just how mad I am about Buena Vista not releasing season three of Once And Again - Imagine that Warner Video decided not to release the final episodes of The Adventures Of Superman. How mad would you be? Or, Paramount pulled the rug out from under us on the release of ST-TAS at the last minute (which would tick both of us off in the extremus.)

By Adam Bomb on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 7:47 am:

More extras are listed here. This looks like it's shaping up to be a great set. I'm there, dude.

By Todd Pence on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 9:54 am:

Many of the animated series episodes I have not seen since the 1970's, when I was just a wee tyke. It will be something to see these again.

By Adam Bomb on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 2:10 pm:

I was almost 19 and a sophomore in college when TAS premiered. I wish VCR's were available then. I haven't seen an episode since 1988, when Nickelodeon was running it in the afternoons. Most of them, I haven't seen since their original run, so seeing them on DVD will almost be like seeing them for the first time. (Was TAS ever syndicated? I can't recall.)

By ScottN on Friday, July 21, 2006 - 3:39 pm:

Adam:

Ditto. I was about 12 when TAS premiered.

TVLand ran it a few years back.

By Adam Bomb on Saturday, July 22, 2006 - 12:03 pm:

I knew that this was too good to be true - Paramount now says that the SRP of TAS will be $62.99, not the $35 I reported above. That's totally in line with their squeezing the last available dollar (or Euro, or whatever currency you use) from their cash cow. Then again, at least it's not $100 SRP. Let's hope that Amazon offers a nice discount if you pre-order (whenever that's ready.) More here.

By Kail on Sunday, July 23, 2006 - 8:29 am:

I believe they saw everyone getting excited about TAS on DVD, and the $35 price, so decided "Well, if they are that happy to get TAS they will pay $62! Let's jack it up!! Ha ha!" Greedy freakin bastards. They are shooting themselves in the foot here. They would sell ALOT more sets at $35. Even I won't pay $62 for 22 eps of a 30 year old cartoon, and I'm like THE TAS man.

By John A. Lang on Sunday, July 23, 2006 - 9:03 pm:

If they're serious about the $62 price, then I expect the TAS episodes to be digitally audio and visually enhanced with THX surround-sound.

By Benn on Sunday, July 23, 2006 - 9:50 pm:

Embarrassingly, I can see myself paying that price to complete my TREK collection. I won't be happy about it, but I'll do it.

And forget the THX Surround-Sound, John. For that price, the sets should be individually autographed by the surviving cast members.

Live long and prosper.

By John A. Lang on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 6:33 pm:

That too.

By Adam Bomb on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 10:39 am:

Amazon is now taking pre-orders for TAS. Price is currently $38.49. Lock in that price now, people. Also, use the link here to TV Shows On DVD.com and support their site by ordering through their link to Amazon, if possible. The guys from TV Shows On DVD.com are really good guys.

By John A. Lang on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 8:52 pm:

I still don't believe it.

Why not? It's not in my hands yet.

(I'm saying this to force them to keep their promise)

By Benn on Thursday, August 17, 2006 - 11:50 pm:

What the hey. I've gone ahead and pre-ordered it. I'm willing to take a chance it will indeed come out. And besides, $38 is too good to pass up. Especially seeing that TVShowsOnDVD.com lists the suggested retail price as $63.

Live long and prosper.

By ScottN on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 6:39 am:

Netflix, when it comes out, for me.

By Anonymous on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 9:22 am:

Tas has been out on vhs for rent for $5 a night.
Too rich for my blood

Paramount's new logo: Live Fast and Prosper

Yeessh

By Adam Bomb on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 9:54 am:

I still don't believe it. Why not? It's not in my hands yet.
I see your point, John. Seeing is not believing in this case. Posession is. As I said before, it could be deja vu all over again. Like what happened withn the third season set of my beloved Once And Again. See above for the gory details on that. I took a chance and pre-ordered the TAS set anyway. I have nothing to lose. Except my patience, if Paramount doesn't deliver.

By Benn on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 10:48 am:

I figure if enough people pre-order the verdammt thing, then maybe Paramount will feel obligated (or greedy enough. Take your pick.) to release it. Finally.

Live long and prosper.

By Adam Bomb on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 12:17 am:

People from my Once And Again fans circle pre-ordered the third season set from Amazon, only to have the set cancelled right out from under us anyway. Gord from TV Shows On DVD told me in an e-mail that the only gauge the studios use to release subsequent seasons of a series is if the previously issued sets sell. No amount of letters, e-mails, phone calls, Internet chatter, etc. will influence TPTB at any of the studios if the sets already in stores don't sell. So, if you're a fan of any series, be it The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Once And Again, or anything else, buy the sets that are available, if you want to see more seasons issued. (Fox was not going to issue any more seasons past the first one of The Mary Tyler Moore Show due to poor sales, but something changed their minds, as they're now up to season four. But, there was a three-year gap between seasons one and two.)

By Anonymous on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 3:19 am:

Anyone remember the dvds that expire- made unplayable after you pay for them ,after certain amount of viewings?

By Adam Bomb on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 12:44 am:

Weren't those the old "Divx" disposable DVDs? They would play once, and then thrown into the trash. They were discontinued when a stink was made about how much garbage would be made by useless DVDs.

By Brian FitzGerald on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 10:57 am:

That's the one. they were discontinued when no one would buy them or the players for them. Among the problems people had with them was if you activate the disc you still can only play them in the player you activated them on, meaning if you buy a second player, or have to replace your player you make your whole collection worthless.

By Adam Bomb on Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 1:42 pm:

IIRC, Disney was actually going to push the Divx format, until they got heat about the amount of trash they would make, and were given visions of landfills teeming with useless DVDs. But, that same bunch of jackasses won't release season three of Once And Again. (Sorry to keep ranting about that, but it irks me sooo much. Anytime I can diss Disney for that, I will.) Now, watch CBS/Paramount release TAS in that format. So you have to keep buying them.

By John A. Lang on Monday, December 25, 2006 - 10:30 pm:

I got this collection.

NOW I believe it's available on DVD.

(See previous postings)

By Kail on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 - 1:47 pm:

It's great, isn't it? And a GREAT picture!

By Adam Bomb on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 12:07 am:

I got mine, too. For the most part, I haven't seen it since 1975, except for "Beyond The Farthest Star" one day when I was home sick in 1988, when Nickelodeon was running TAS. And, it's the first time I'm watching it all in color, as all I had in 1973 was a 19 inch Admiral black and white tube (remember them?) set.

By Kail on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 7:08 am:

For the most part I'm very happy, however, they totally screwed up the starship graveyard of Time Trap. It's now black instead of red. You can hardly see the ships now. I wonder how, or why, this happened?

This will probably offer as good an explanation as you'll hear for that.
