New TAS comic "Like Father, Like Son"

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Trek Animated Series: The Animated Sink (AKA Yet Another Sink): New TAS comic "Like Father, Like Son"
By Kail on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 6:12 am:

The latest Star Trek:TAS comic "Like Father, Like Son" is now online.

Academy cadet James T. Kirk and his father George are ordered to help recapture three escaped convicts from a war-torn alien world.

This new comic features Star Trek advertisments created by the many talented artists in the TrekBBS art forum. My heartfelt appreciation and thanks goes out to them, to Masao Okazaki who created all the alien artwork, and to Ken Gliem who helped me write the story. I hope you enjoy it!!

The comic begins here...

All comments and feedback are appreciated.

I loved the ads. Especially the "Big Reset Button" from B&B. Hilarious. Very creative.

The comic was pretty good, too. As always. I really enjoy reading these Kail.

I can't believe you're getting Russell Bates to write the next one. How'd you pull that one off?

Live long and prosper.

One thing that did bother me about the ads, howcome the prices of each item was given either in credits or dollars? Shouldn't they have all been in credits?

Live long and prosper.

Wahoo! The long-awaited issue #7!
I liked the ads, but found them "in the way" so to speak, just like ads in a real (that is, a paper) comic book. (Guess I'm showing my age regarding comic books. Actually, yours are no less "real" than those printed on paper... no offense was intended!)
As always, I look forward to the next issue!

Thanks Benn and CR.

"I can't believe you're getting Russell Bates to write the next one. How'd you pull that one off?"

Russell Bates contacted me a couple of years ago because he found my site. So I asked him, and he consented to an interview. I sent him a nice framed picture I made of Kukulkan, and he sent me back a copy of Star Trek: The New Voyages 2, which contained his screenplay for "The Patient Parasites", which was written for TAS, but never produced. So I contacted him again a few months ago and asked permission to do the story as a comic and he agreed. That's how I pulled that one off! Next I may contact DC Fontana, she seems to be helping with fan productions these days. Maybe she's got something floating around.

"One thing that did bother me about the ads, how come the prices of each item was given either in credits or dollars? Shouldn't they have all been in credits?"

Well, they were all made by different people.

"I liked the ads, but found them "in the way" so to speak, just like ads in a real (that is, a paper) comic book."

Originally, I was going to use actual comicbook ads that I was going to scan out of some of my old comics, like the X-Ray vision one, as sort of a tribute to the comics I loved as a kid. But Masao said "Wouldn't it be cooler if they were Star Trek specific?" So we made up a few and showed them to the folks over at the BBS art forum, who decided they'd make us a few more. Then they decided to make their monthly art contest about Star Trek ads, and that's where the color ones came from. Lonegungirl's Klingon hairdryer won the contest, BTW. I think they are great!

Thanks again for your kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Tell your friends!! (/:-)

I LOVED the ads! They were PRICELESS!

Here's something I wanted to ask, Kail: Do the scribblings on Captain Sena's uniform (and his men) and the Shamar clothes have any meaning? Or are they there for looks ?

It means: "If you can read this, kiss yourself goodbye"

As I understand it, it is the barconian language.

I LOVED the ads! They were PRICELESS!

Thanks John. I thought they were pretty cool myself. There are some very creative people over at the BBS art forum.

Re: the Barconian symbols on their clothes... I just figured that the symbols on the escaped prisoners stood for something like PRISONER or some other indication of those individuals' status in society. There was some inconsistency in how the symbols appeared, however; for example, on page 36, the symbols are flopped (reversed) from one frame to another.
As for the soldiers, I figured that the symbols were a unit marking.

The ads were great! Of course, what comic would be complete without the (in)famous XRAY SPECS ad?

I figured as much. I was just wondering whether anyone had worked out what, if anything, they actually said.

Ha! Good eye. Masao and I had a bet that no one would notice.

I don't think Masao had anything specific in mind when creating the costume lettering.

By Masao Okazaki on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 - 7:58 pm:

Masao here. The font used for the script is called Walt Disney, or something like that, which I flipped around to make illegible. The script on the convict uniforms say "prisoner," while those on the soldiers' uniforms say "Barconian Armed Forces" or maybe "People's Republic of Barconia" Of course, my Barconian is a bit rusty, so the translation may be inaccurate.

By CR on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 - 10:46 pm:

No one would notice? At this website?! :O
So, what was the bet for? A case of Romulan ale? Saurian brandy? Something... um, "it's green"?

Hi, Masao. Love your work at The Starfleet Museum, and your contributions to Kail's work!

By Masao Okazaki on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 - 11:51 pm:

Thanks, CR.

I was suggesting to Kail that we should claim that the flipped text was intentional and intended as an homage to similar production goofs on TOS and TAS.

So, um, it was all intentional! That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

By CR on Thursday, July 21, 2005 - 12:42 am:

"...homage to similar production goofs..."

Well, then, PRISONER should simply have been written as PPISONER (in the Barconian text, of course).
Most Star Trek NitCentral readers should understand the reference. :)

Next edition: "Captain Kirk & The Scpipts"

Who will supervise them?

(Just kidding!) :)

By Benn on Thursday, July 21, 2005 - 11:50 pm:

Thanks for the info, Masao! And welcome to Nitcentral!

Live long and prosper.

Thanks, Benn. Actually, I sent in a few nits about 10 years ago (and had them published in the old newsletter), but this is my first time posting on the boards.

All Hail Kail......Is totally awesome..great job. The X-ray glasses was my favorite add too.

By Kail on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 5:53 pm:

Thanks from the whole team Glenn. I think every comic I ever bought had that X-ray glasses ad. (/:-)

By CR on Saturday, January 21, 2006 - 1:15 am:

Maybe I missed it, but is there any news about when the next issue is going to come out? (By the way, speaking of new stuff, the new calendar pages are cool.)
