No Laughing Matter

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Nine: No Laughing Matter
By D.K. Henderson on Friday, February 11, 2000 - 6:16 pm:

Plot A: Colonel Horace Baldwin, the man who sent Charles to the 4077th because of a $600 cribbage debt, is coming for a visit. Discarding his initial impulse to maim or kill, Charles decides to do some groveling. Baldwin laps it up and asks for more, finally demanding that Charles procure him some female company. Charles swallows his pride and goes to find a bar girl, but Margaret inadverdently enters Baldwin's tent, finding him with a leather hood on. Charles must choose between Margaret's future, and a cushy job in Tokyo.
Plot B: Annoyed by the suggestion that he jokes to hide his feelings, Hawkeye goes on a twenty-four-hour joke-fast.

Hawkeye actually lost the bet, but B.J. never noticed it. As he leaves the Officer's Club, Pierce complains about how much agony he feels about not being able to makes jokes about Charles' situation. Hawk says, "I better leave before it gets any better." I'd say that qualifies at the very least as a quip.

I think it's funny that Margaret accuses Baldwin of "perversions unbecoming an officer". From what I can tell, she seems pretty kinky herself.

The jokes that B.J. makes about Charles' and Margaret's situation with Colonel Baldwin really aren't that funny. Neither are Hawkeye's jokes when the day is over. It's amazing how lame their jokes are. Especially Hawkeye's. You'd think he be saving up some really good jokes after having to go a day without telling one. And yet...

Charles bemoans that he can no longer enjoy octopus or sushi in Tokyo. Why? He goes there for R&R occasionally. Is there a reason he can't dine at a restaurant that serves these dishes when he's there?

After Klinger delivers the TWX (Twix) to Colonel Potter and leaves, Hawkeye is looking away from the Colonel. However, in the next shot, as Potter remembers who Baldwin is, Pierce is looking at Potter.

While playing cribbage with Charles in the Swamp, Colonel Baldwin notes that Winchester is fond of Tokyo. At that point, the camera is outside of the Swamp. When the camera cuts to the interior of the Swamp and a medium shot of Charles, the Major's head and left arm have changed positions.

Great line - Charles: "So how's, uh, the Lord?"

Inside the Officers Club, above the door, is a sign. In case anyone's wondering, it says, "Dangerous Dan was here 6/14/51".

Waitaminute. Pierce left the Officers Club before he could have learned how the whole Margaret/Charles/Baldwin situation was resolved. Yet, when making his jokes over the P.A. system, Hawkeye quips that Charles learned he couldn't "get to Tokyo on the layaway plan". Um, how does Hawkeye know that Winchester's plan to be reassigned to Tokyo failed?

During Hawkeye's bout of "jokus interruptus", B.J. made more wisecracks than normal. He did in a manner that's different from his normal joking style. Of course, this was to goad Pierce into losing their bet. Strangely, Hunnicutt seems to be making jokes with the same tone of voice even after Pierce left the Officers Club. The jokes weren't told in B.J.'s normal style. If that makes any sense.

"Beaver biscuits!"
