The Incubator

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Two: The Incubator

Plot: Hawkeye and Trapper battle brass and red tape to get an incubator for the unit.

One of the funniest lines in the entire series.
General Mitchell: "Now wait just a minute. This is a press conference. The last thing I want to do is answer a bunch of questions."

I realize that they were trying to point out the general idiocy of army red tape, but I still don't know how on Earth Supply could consider an incubator a "luxury", but not a pizza oven.

For yet another time discrepancy, in this episode Hawkeye says the war has been running for two years. Which would mean everything with BJ, Potter, and Charles took place in under a year's time.

By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, May 09, 2000 - 5:27 am:

Was this Gen. Mitchell the same one that provided the officers' club?

The actor playing Mitchell was very fine. Spouted all that doubletalk with a straight face.

It would have been fun to put that lab nurse in a scene with the supply officer.

There's a right way, a wrong way, and [all together now] the Army Way.

Two things (at least) missing from this episode. Just after Radar brings Hawkeye and Trapper coffee, Frank comes in. He criticizes the Captains for their drunken behaviour, asking, "Whatever happened to the bright-eyed and bushy -tailed young doctors I used to know?" or something to that effect. He then, amazingly, convinces Pierce and McIntyre to take a sobriety pledge. This is referred to twice in the episode.

Later, in the OR, when the nurse informs Hawkeye that Radar found some incubators, Pierce tells Henry he and Trapper are going after them. Henry says, "Just so long as I know you're going."

This one may not end right either. Seems like there was a scene with Henry whining about the loss of his barbeque.

As mentioned, there is a scene cut for syndication in which Frank asks, “What happened to those bright eyed bushy tailed doctors I once knew?” Hawkeye vows that he and Trapper “are gonna our tails bushed again.” Later when Henry offers Pierce and McIntyre a drink, they respond that they took a pledge – “bushy tail.”

Let’s see now. In “The Trial of Henry Blake”, Henry’s trial is presided over by a General Mitchell. Mitchell can be seen again in this ep. In “Trial” Mitchell is highly competent. In this ep, he’s a bit befuddled. Question, does this precede “The Trial of Henry Blake” or does it come after? Either way, you have to wonder why Mitchell does not recognize Pierce and McIntyre the second time he sees them. If “The Trial” is second, why aren’t the Captains’ antics at the press conference held against Henry, as a further sign of Henry unsuitability to command at the trial? At any rate, my guess is that “The Incubator” goes first.

By the way, the aid that had the key to the Officer’s Club in “The Trial of Henry Blake” sits next to Mitchell at the press conference in this ep.

Yeah, that is weird...best I can come up with is that it's a combination of Hawkeye's sensitivity on the matter (doesn't he go on the waggon altogether in a later ep?) and the fact that neither he nor Trapper could stand Burns to have any reason whatsoever to crow over them.

The colonel that Hawkeye and Trapper try to get an incubator from tells them of all the things he sells, and mentions a B-52. The B-52 wasn't in service by this point, just in development. So if this guy really could get a B-52, I call that resourceful!
