Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Eight: Life Time
By D.K. Henderson on Friday, February 11, 2000 - 4:14 pm:

Plot: A soldier with a lacerated aorta is flown to the 4077th. After Hawkeye compresses the aorta against the man's spine, they have only twenty minutes to restore circulation before paralysis will set in. A ticking clock continues throughout this tense episode.

Does everyone in the military syncronize their clocks and watches every day? I work in a library with seven clocks, plus assorted staff wristwatches, and none of them are ever the same. No one ever questioned that Kellye's watch might not by syncronized with the clock in the helicopter.

I see that Hawkeye got himself another canvas bathtub, after being ordered to get rid of the first one.

Snappy bit of dialogue, when B.J. brings in the aorta:
Hawkeye: "What took you so long?"
B.J: "The man it was attached to was still using it."

Several precious seconds were wasted, right after Harold died, as Roberts made his farewells.

The ending was excellent ("He won't know whether to be brave, generous, or pompous!") but I wish they could have shown Roberts looking on, as well.

In this episode they showed a major difference between Frank and Charles. In one episode, Hawk and Trapper have to drug Frank and steal his blood to save someone. In this episode, Charles quickly volunteers to give blood to the soldier, eventhough he gave blood only five days ago, and it is somewhat dangerous for him. Frank will only do something noble if tricked or forced into it. Charles will do it because he can.

For those who have only seen the syndication version: Klinger says, "I'll be back in a trice with the ice!" Charles says, "Trice?" As Klinger heads out the door, he yells back that he's working his way through the book 30 DAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR VOCABULARY. (or perhaps it's Build A Better Vocabulary.) A couple more comments are tossed around, then Charles mentions that he's on day 22 (or somewhere around there.)

Also missing is Igor protesting the confiscation of his ice, for without it--"They can taste the booze that way!"

By D.K. Henderson on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 5:52 am:

Apparently the book is 15 DAYS TO A BETTER VOCABULARY, and Charles said that he's on day 14.

Everyone acted as though the full circulation commenced right as Kellye looked at her watch. The circulation had been underway for quite some little time, while Hawkeye was stitching away and blood was squirting everywhere. They were probably still over the twenty minute time, but it wasn't anywhere near the three and a half minutes that Hawkeye claimed.

They made a big deal out of checking to see if there was any major fighting going on in the area. There was not. Well...what would they have done if there had been? Left the patient to die?

And the opening credit still tout Gary Burghoff starring as Radar. And of course, by this point Radar is no longer at the MASH unit. Much less the show.

Is the arterial clamp Pierce sends Margaret after the one the doctors had specially made in "Patent 4077"? No wonder they keep it in the Swamp. That thing's one of a kind.

Hawkeye exaggerates. He has not had been holding the aorta with his unsterilized hand for ten minutes. It's actually been about five minutes.

During the first commercial break, five minutes elapses.

In most episodes, the instrument Klinger uses to find out if there's any more casualties is called a "phone". In this ep, Klinger calls it a "radio". ("My C.O. can't come to the radio now.") So which is it, a radio or a phone?

Kellye apparently doesn't use military time. She gives the time in standard time, whereas the chopper pilot gave it in military time.

Is there a reason none of the surgical staff working on George (the patient needing the arterial graft) aren't wearing masks? I know that they've started the whole operation without being sterilized, but surely once they got into OR, they'd at least put on some surgical masks?

Why couldn't Klinger give blood? IIRC, his blood type is also AB negative.

This is one of the few episodes of the series to not have a laugh track.

Actually, in the episode "It Happened One Night", Klinger said his blood type was B+

By Benn on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 - 12:08 am:

Then that means they changed Charles' blood type. Because, IIRC, at one time, Max and Charles had the same blood type.

Then that means they changed Charles' blood type. - me

Or rather, they changed Klinger's blood type. As I said, at one point both Max and Winchester had the same blood type.

Not to mention Father Mulcahy.

By Benn on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 - 9:57 pm:

Right. That was in "C*A*V*E" that we learned that those three had the same blood type, wasn't it? Or am I thinking of another ep?

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 12:29 pm:

It was C*A*V*E. Klinger was speaking to the patient who was recieving a direct transfer from Klinger. He said that there were only the three of them in the camp. Can't remember what crack he made about Charles' blood, but I do know that he said that Father Mulcahy's blood was "a little purer."

By Joseph J. Coppola on Monday, January 09, 2006 - 9:09 pm:

Kelley's watch matches up with the clock on the screen.

About 60 seconds or so elapse from the time the clamps are removed until Margaret asks Kelley for the time.

In the C*A*V*E episode I believe Klinger says Charles' blood is a little "bluer" meaning aristocratic blue blood.

Joseph, do you have a twin brother named Jason?

By Joseph J. Coppola on Thursday, January 19, 2006 - 10:19 pm:

Sorry, no twin brother.
