Good-Bye Radar

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Eight: Good-Bye Radar
By D.K. Henderson on Friday, February 11, 2000 - 11:44 am:

Plot: In part one, the 4077th's generator has blown out and their auxilary generator stolen. Everyone is frantic for Radar to return from Tokyo and solve everything, but even Radar finds the task difficult. While working on the problem, news arrives of Radar's uncle's death, and plans are made for a compassionate discharge.
In part two, Radar decides that he is needed too badly to leave, until Klinger manages to scrounge a generator all by himself. Amid a sudden rush of casualties, Radar says to goodbye to everyone, including his teddy bear.

I have taken it upon myself to pick out any Toledo references that Klinger makes (mostly because I am from T-town and it is mentioned so rarely on TV).

In this episode Klinger wears a Toledo Mud Hens uniform (they are the local baseball team).

Touching moment... Hawkeye gives Radar a farewell salute from OR.

By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, February 24, 2000 - 5:11 am:

Another such moment was when they found the teddy bear.

By Khaja on Wednesday, March 08, 2000 - 12:40 am:

It's a very touching episode in parts. I saw it again today and was surprised to hear that Winchester actually called Radar, "Walter." I remembered the rest of the good-byes, but not that one.
The only problem with the episode overall is that Gary Burghoff's performance seems to be a little off. He sounds like he's acting, which is never a good sign. It's also one of the few times where you can really tell that Burghoff is twice his character's age.

By Brian Lombard on Wednesday, May 31, 2000 - 11:03 am:

Question. In part 1, Radar meets a nurse at the airport, and the two of them really hit it off.

I remember watching the failed spin-off series "After-MASH," and in one episode, Radar came to town to get married. Was his bride the same girl from this episode? I just don't remember, as I was too young at the time. Anyone know?

By Khaja on Wednesday, May 31, 2000 - 2:02 pm:

No, it's not the same woman. The one he marries in AfterMASH is named Sandy (and, according to W*A*L*T*E*R, she leaves him soon after). The nurse here is named Patty. However, if you ever read fanfic, you'll note that Radar almost always ends up married to Patty. :)

By Benn on Friday, November 23, 2001 - 10:25 pm:

Because the 4077th has no generator, Radar comes up with the idea that they operate outside. There they can use the lights of the jeeps to see at night. Two problems with this. Number one, wasn't anyone worried about infections? Wouldn't operating in an environment like the Great Outdoors increase the likelihood of such infections?

Also, in the episode "As You Were", the generator was knocked out. What did the surgeons do for lights? They used flashlights. Is there a reason they couldn't break out the flashlights in "Goodbye Radar"?

By Dave on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 8:39 pm:

Another problem with the headlights is their angle. When operating on a patient the light needs to come from above so the surgeon can see into the patient. The light from these headlights comes in from the side.

By Benn on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 10:15 pm:

Come to think of it, that was something that kept nagging me in the back of my mind. Thanks, Dave, for bringing it up.

By kerriem on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 8:14 pm:

Wasn't anyone worried about infections?

Wellll...the OR-slash-flimsy wooden structure probably isn't as sterile as they'd like either. Most of the disinfecting process likely focusses on the operating tables and instruments anyway.
(Which admittedly doesn't solve the problem of air- or insect-borne contagions.)

By Benn on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 9:34 pm:

In this ep, Radar claims no one helped him learn how to do the job of Company Clerk. Not only is this unlikely, but it's contradicted by the episode "Period of Adjustment". According to Father Mulcahy, Colonel Blake helped Radar learn the job.

This is the second time Hawkeye saluted Radar. The first time was when the Corporal got his Purple Heart.

For the record, Radar's final words in the series are, "I'm ready. Let's go."

By Benn on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 9:47 pm:

BTW, I think there's a scene missing. The scene occurs when Klinger is going to get the generator. It turns out the generator was requisitioned to go to a General. Klinger finds he can do a good impersonation of the General. IIRC there was originally a scene where Klinger gets the generator by impersonating the General. This scene is cut.

By Justin ODonnell on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 10:28 pm:

Just saw this episode. Since they were receiving light horizontally from the jeeps, and not from above them, I would have thought that they would have errected a minimal tarp of some kind to cover everyone from above, in the event of rain. If it had rained, and there was no cover, that could have caused some major problems for all concerned!

By Paul Joyce on Wednesday, August 06, 2003 - 11:43 am:

*sniff* *sniff* Radar's gone....

By Greg Odorizzi on Thursday, April 28, 2005 - 9:24 pm:

Did Radar go through puberty while he was in Tokyo? His voice is deeper in this episode.

By Greg Odorizzi on Thursday, April 28, 2005 - 9:31 pm:

Hawkeye congratulating Radar for going home seems misplaced: "I'm very happy for you" doesn't seem the proper thing to say to Radar just as everyone was lamenting the death of his uncle.

By R on Friday, April 29, 2005 - 7:34 am:

Maybe because even though the circumstances for his returning hom ewhere not the best he was at least goign to be going back home and getting out of the war and all the crud that hawkeye was still goign to be dealing with is why he said that.

By Benn on Sunday, November 06, 2005 - 12:07 pm:

Given how big the main generator is, how big was the backup generator? It was apparently small enough to fit into its own storage room, yet it would have to be big enough to power up OR - at least. And now that I think about it, as big as the main generator is, how'd the unit move it whenever they bugged out? The main generator looks heavy enough that they would need some form of mechanical help to move it.

And how easy would it be for somebody to steal the backup generator? Why wasn't the door to its storage shed padlocked? I'd say the backup generator would be one of the more valuable pieces of equipment at the 4077th.

For the first time in a long while, General Imbrie is mentioned. He's the General who's in charge of the MASH unit's sector, IIRC. He's also the one whose likeness bumped Radar off the flight back to Korea.

I'm not sure, even with zooming in on the DVD image, but it looks like the next plane to Seoul was leaving at 1700 hours (5 in the afternoon). That would have given Radar two hours to make it back to his unit if he was supposed to be back at "Oh-Nineteen Hundred hours" (7 o'clock at night). Does that even sound possible?

Maybe I'm being ignorant here, but when Radar's talking to Patty Haven, the girl he met at the airport, about the "French perfume...made by a little Japanese guy on the Ginza", he allows her to sniff the perfume with the lid still on the bottle. I've always thought the cap had to be removed from perfume bottles in order to tell what they smell like. Is it possible to tell how perfume smell through the bottle and cap?

You know, I can't help but wondering if Klinger tried talking to Sgt. Rhoden ("The Incubator", "None Like It Hot") or even Charlie Lee ("To Market, To Market") about getting a new generator? Those guys seemed to have everything for sale. It would have been a nice nod to conitnuity had Klinger at least mentioned talking to them.

It's the next morning at the airport and the flight schedule on the chalkboard behind Patty and Radar hasn't changed one bit. Were the planes at the Tachikawa Airport that regular?

WAITAMINUTE! Only "less than a hour" has passed by since Radar and Patty met?!? For one thing much more time than that has elapsed at the 4077th. The generator failed at night. The doctors were in OR. And with the power out, all surgical procedures were surely taking that much longer to get through. Then when Potter tells Klinger to keep looking for a new generator, among other orders, Max wants to have breakfast first. This indicates that several hours have passed. Plus the lighting at the airport is completely different between the two scenes. The first time around it's lit to indicate that it's somewhat dark outside. Then in the second airport scene it's lit to indicate that it's a new day. And Radar says it's been "less than an hour" since he and Patty met? I don't think so.

Two weeks? Radar says he's had a "rough last two weeks". Does this mean he was on R&R for two weeks?! How the flamin' hell did he accrue that much leave? (We know he's spent at least one week on R&R. I'm assuming the "rough last two weeks" is a reference to his entire vacation from the MASH unit. I could be wrong, but it's strange that he would consider his week of R&R part of a "rough last two weeks".)

Those soldiers the jeep picked are awfully rude. You'd think one of them would've sat in the front passenger seat. Yet, all three soldiers shove their way into the back seat.

Look at B.J.'s left hand as Potter tells Radar, "As long as you had a good time." Hunnicutt's left hand is on his chest. In the very next shot the hand is no longer there.

"I'm so conservative, I make you look like a New Dealer."

By Benn on Monday, November 07, 2005 - 2:11 am:

"Goodbye, Radar pt. 2"

I believe the scene where Margaret talks to Charles about how much she's going to miss Radar is cut for syndication. In the scene, she compares Corporal O'Reilly to an old Raggedy Ann doll she once had. The scene ends with Major Houlihan kissing Radar on the lips. To which O'Reilly exclaims, "Wow. Hot Lips!"

If I-Corp has already approved Radar's discharge, could the Corporal really change his mind and decide to stay? I'd imagine the Army would frown on such things. I just don't believe it would be possible for Radar to do that.

I'm not sure, but when Father Mulcahy is saying goodbye to Radar, the ends of the Padre's purple stole are closer together in the close-up shot of the Father than in the longshot.

In his close-ups, while saying goodbye, the wind is ruffling the top front of Captain Hunnicutt's hair. In the other shot of him and Radar, the hair is still.

The scene where Potter, Hawkeye and B.J. discover that Radar has left his teddy bear is one of the most touching scenes in the series. I still get a little choked up seeing it.

"I'm so conversative, I make you look like a New Dealer."

By Anonymous on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 10:58 pm:

We know the reason why Radar had left the 4077th MASH was because his Uncle Ed died and he needed to be home to help out on the farm, but what were the reasons why had the actor playing him, Gary Burghoff had to leave?

By Benn on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 2:05 am:

He was burned out on the role, IIRC. Gary Burghoff basically decided he had had enough and it was time for him to leave the show.

By goog on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 6:11 am:

That was before he came back in AfterMASH and W*A*L*T*E*R. :-) I assume he couldn't find work and was too typecast, so he decided to go with what he had.

By Anonymous on Saturday, April 29, 2006 - 9:26 pm:

If I could add an extra scene that during Radar's drive to Kimpo Airport, I would add he would have a small talk with the driver and then when he arrives, he goes to his airplane, and just before he is about to enter the plane, he looks outside, the hills of Korea, the choppers coming and going. Then he salutes and says "Goodbye, Korea." then he gets inside the plane, to his seat. As the plane takes off, it saids in a caption "Goodbye, Radar."

By Brad J Filippone (Binro) on Saturday, August 01, 2020 - 9:50 pm:

Way back in 2001 someone asked about the angle of the lights from the jeeps. If you look at the scene closely, there are nurses and other people holding up reflectors. I'm not sure what they are. Looks like metal trays of some sort

By Judi Jeffreys, Granada in NorthWest (Jjeffreys_mod) on Saturday, August 01, 2020 - 11:04 pm:

The producers tried really hard to get Burghoff to keep his hat on in later seasons :-)
