Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Seven: Major Ego
By D.K. Henderson on Friday, February 11, 2000 - 5:24 am:

Plot A: After saving a patient with open heart massage, Charles brushes off everyone's admiration--then summons a reporter to do a story on the "miracle". His arrogance increases until it almost costs another patient his life.
Plot B: Newly divorced, Margaret decides to spend some time with the reporter when he shows an interest in her, but tells him afterwards that she is not ready to make another commitment.

My mistake--Margaret was not actually divorced at this point, but the process was under way.

Just out of curiosity, why was Charles not punished for his screw-up? That was a potentially deadly mistake, so why were his reputation and his pride the only things at stake?

No one ever did seem to get disciplined for making medical mistakes. In "Margaret's Engagement" she reported that one of their patients had to be operated on again in Tokyo because he had developed perotonitis, the reason being that the doctor (Frank) had not exteriorized (sp?) properly. Frank casually said, "Well, that's one on me." Aside from Potter sternly telling him not to do it again, nothing happened to him.

Because they were doing "meatball surgery". Patch 'em up, and ship 'em out. It seemed that quite often they were stacked up 12 deep or more in pre-op.

Haste and necessity is no excuse for poor practice. Especially in a case of such obvious negligence and outright malpractice as in Charles's mishap here. He wasn't inundated with patients when he gave that curare. He was just not being careful.

For the record, on Plot B, DK had an good reason to first say that she was newly divorced, since she obviously misled the reporter about that exact point. In her words "for the first time since my divorce, I was free of Donald." Since she was leading other people on, it is safe that DK was caught in her lies.

One thing that Margaret was grousing about in this episode--Donald had tied up their joint bank account--which was mostly her own money.

Only one really noticeable syndication cut--when they were called to triage (where Charles was looking around for a really juicy patient to hover over for the camera) B.J. and a nurse were trotting alongside of a jeep with a patient. The nurse sneezed, and B.J. commented, "Springtime in Korea--pollen and bullets."

When Margaret thanks Winchester for the opportunity to work with him (in the Mess Tent), she has her left hand in her lap. In the next shot, as Charles says, "Anytime", both of her hands are on her cup of coffee.

As Captain Greenleigh (from Stars and Stripes) gets ready to write about Sutton getting a previous Purple Heart, the reporter puts pen to paper. However, in the next shot, as he sits down, the pencil is nowhere near his notepad.

On the morning after Margaret's tryst with Greenleigh, she's greeted by Potter. Look at the chess (checkers?) players in the background. In one shot one of them has his hand to the back of his head. In the next, his chin is resting on his hand.

"All that good whiskey shot to hell."
