Lil

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Seven: Lil

Plot: Col. Potter strikes up a very warm friendship with visiting Eight Army nurse Lil Rayburn, who is of his own age and interests. Radar reacts badly, thinking that Potter is betraying his wife. He almost does, simply because he is so pleased to have a contemporary to spend time with.

This isn't really a nit with the episode, but rather the general interpretation of part of it. The B plot involves Hawkeye doing everything he can think of to find out what BJ's name stands for. At the end, BJ does say that he was named for his mother, Bea Hunnicutt, and his father, Jay Hunnicutt. In all the FAQ's and whatnot about M*A*S*H, this is given as the answer. What I can't figure out is why? Hawkeye turns right around and asks how BJ can possibly expect him to believe that, and then BJ again gives "Anything you want!" as the answer, like he'd been doing throughout the episode. It seemed to me that he just gave his parents' names as a story that we weren't really expected to believe, thereby leaving his name a mystery. Is there something missing in syndication that would explain this better?

By pentalarc on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - 10:03 pm:

I saw this in syndication, and htere is a scene there is scene where he looks in the official records, and sees BJ's name on his personell records as BJ. I went to high school with a guy who's first name was J, just hte letter. And Truman's middle name was S, just hte letter, so it's possible

I watched this one on DVD last night. It's one of the rare ones where the syndication cuts really aren't too noticeable. One place that I think was cut was in the O.R, where Margaret is frantically bustling about, making sure that everything is perfect. In the process, she moves a piece of equipment away from Charles' table. He calls to her--very distinctly--to come and bring it back to where it was. Margaret seems not to hear him, as she is boasting to Col. Rayburn about how well her nurses perform. Charles asks Father Mulcahy--again very distinctly--if he would mind bringing the equipment back, and Margaret rushes to do it. She hisses at Charles that he is trying to make her look bad, and Charles replies that she doesn't need his help.

There really wasn't anything else that stood out as having been missing before.

It seems to me that Hawkeye could persuade Radar to take another look at B.J.'s file. In the episode about "Captain Tuttle", when they were filling out a personnel form for him, it included his parents' names. If B.J.'s parents were Bea and Jay, that would settle it.

Did Hawkeye ever think of asking Peg?

Are you saying Pierce could have learned Hunnicutt's parents' names by looking at Tuttle's files? That's a neat trick considering it was Trapper who was in that ep. I guess Trapper's parents have the same names as B.J.'s.

No, no--I meant that military personnel files apparently include the names of the person's parents--as shown when they were mocking up a file for "Tuttle". So Radar should be able to peek in B.J.'s file and see what his parents' names really are.

I thought when Radar first looked into BJs file, he says that the parents' names are abbreviated to B. and J.?

(It's not like BJ is the type to fill out forms accurately, right?)

By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 5:39 am:

Radar doesn't mention B.J.'s parents--he tells Hawkeye that B.J.'s name is--B.J, and when Hawkeye says that he doesn't believe it, Radar shoves the file at him and says, "Here, look!" Hawkeye doesn't look for the parents' names either.

Wonder if Colonel Rayburn heard the "grab your hose and powder your nose" PA announcement? She arrived in front of the Company Clerk's Office just seconds after the announcement was made.

Was B.J. just having fun tormenting Hawkeye? Why didn't he just come right out and tell Pierce what B.J. stood for instead of being coy about it?

Uh, is there a reason the flat tire on the jeep couldn't have been changed? I mean, surely there's a jack somewhere in camp? More importantly, the spare tire is there on the back of the jeep.

When Margaret tells Klinger the reason they're drinking is because it's "Independence Day", Max makes a comment about it being September 10th. Since the Korean ended in August of 1953, and since Potter joined the unit in September of '52, that would mean this ep takes place just days after the Colonel's assignment to the 4077th. Boy, ain't it amazing how the events of the previous two seasons were squeezed into a couple of days?

This is interesting. As Potter and Lil walk back from their picnic, they pass the camp's barbershop. If you look carefully, you can see someone getting a haircut. It's being done outside the barbershop, though.

NANJAO: Every scene that takes place in Colonel Rayburn's tent, the VIP tent, takes place at night.

All of a sudden in this Ep Radar needs a wind up alarm clock?

Also in the episode that features 1 year in one 1/2 hour ("The Giant's Win the Pennant.")Potter is the CO on 12/31/51 AND of 12/31/52. A neat trick if you ask me.
