Last Laugh

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Six: Last Laugh
By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, February 10, 2000 - 9:31 am:

Plot: B.J.'s old friend Bardonara is going home, but before doing so, he and B.J. wage a practical joke war that gets B.J. in trouble with a general.

Another thank you to Khaja for Plot B: Klinger decides that he's a sheik or something, complete with an invisible camel, Habibi.

I wish that I could see the uncut episodes again! I can't remember how the camel thing is dealt with anymore. In the version I see, the only mention of it is when Klinger is in Potter's office with a brush and dustpan, cleaning up the "mess" his Habibi made. I'm sure there was more to it than that.

By Khaja on Sunday, February 20, 2000 - 8:15 pm:

There's also a Plot C in which Margaret is trying to get to Tokyo to satisfy Donald's urges.

By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, February 22, 2000 - 5:30 am:

Yes, of course! Which leads up to the best line in the episode: "She's no fun when Donald's relaxed."

Thanks again!

One of the scene cut from this ep involves Klinger in the chow line with "Habibi", his camel. He has two trays, and Father Mulcahy notices this and asks about it. When informed that the second tray is for Habibi, who is, of course, invisible, the Padre asks where the camel is. Klinger, his right arm in the air, answers that the camel is by his side. Mulcahy says he thought as much. Klinger also refuses an extra serving of meatloaf, saying that camels aren't carnivores.

When Potter asks Hawkeye where B.J. is, the position of the fork in Pierce's hand changes within two different shots. Later, you can see Mulcahy is holding his coffee cup higher in the close-up shot than in the previous longshot.

In "The Bus", B.J. seems to be very machanically inept. However, in this ep, he and Barndonaro talk about how they took apart a taxi cab and rebuilt it in the dean's office. I'd imagine that doing something like that would require that Hunnicutt have some skills at automechanics.

When Margaret, in the C.O.'s office, is talking about why she needs to see Donald, in the shots behind Colonel Potter, the Colonel is clearly looking up at Margaret. However, when the POV changes and it's from the Major's POV, Potter is looking at a file on his desk.

While talking to the MPs outside the Colonel's office, the papers on the bulletin board (the one in the compound) are different. As Hawkeye, B.J. and the MPs approach the bulletin board, at the far left of the board, there's a manilla sheet with a white piece of paper over it. In the shots with B.J. and Hawkeye, the white paper is in a different place.

After the MPs have taken B.J., Father Mulcahy asks if there's anything he can do. He's standing slightly behind Hawkeye. When told he can pray, he says "That's all I ever get to do." He's now standing slightly in front of Pierce.

All that talk of Hawkeye dissing practical jokes seems a bit hypocritical, doncha think?

When Pierce, Hunnicutt and Potter return from the inquiry with General Fox, Radar refers to Margaret as "Major Houlihan". Did these people ever call her by her married name, "Mrs. Penobscott"?

It was resolved when a drunken Colonel Potter cheerfully informs Klinger, who's "grooming" the camel, that he brought a discharge back from Seoul - for Habibi. ("It's always the other guy.")

How did B.J. know the jeep Bardonaro took was just about out of gas? When they arrived at camp, Hunnicutt was sprawled out across the back of the jeep. Hawkeye was driving. At no point, after the jeep stops can we see B.J. look at the gas gauge in the vehicle.

Where is Charles in this ep? I'm tempted to say this ep occurs before Winchester is assigned to the camp, not to mention before Frank went crazy. If you look carefully in the scene where Bardonaro first gets to the camp, there's a brief shot of Charles' side of the tent. Next to his bunk is a sign that says, "Swamp". The bed also appears to be unmade. Does this mean that Frank went on leave shortly after Margaret was married? (Which would help explain why Radar is still calling her "Major Houlihan".) I mean, it seems to me this ep takes place between the time Margaret was married and the time Frank went Section 8. Is that possible?

Best line: "Did I fall down?"

And of course, I should mention that Leo Bardonaro was played by James Cromwell famous for his role in the film, Babe and as Zephram Cochrane in Star Trek: First Contract. He was also in the movie, L.A. Confidential.

Actually BJ might be able to help take a taxi apart (With Bardonaro doing most of the tech part while all BJ does is turn wrenches and carry things) yet still not know how to fix something. My 6 year old can take thigns apart but that doesnt make her cpable of fixing the toys (Or putting them back together properly when she gets done)

No it's not. Houlihan doesn't come back from her honeymoon until "Fade Out, Fade In" and by that time Burns is already on his way to going crazy.

Actually, the only time I can recall Margaret being referred to by her married name was in the season opener. She had come back early, and was in the O.R. The doctors naturally began speculating on why she had come back early. (Potter: "They had to throw a bucket of water on me and the Missus.") Father Mulcahy breaks in with, "Gentlemen, please! Mrs. Penobscot's feelings!"

Perhaps it has to do with military protocol? After all, she earned her rank as a Houlihan. Or perhaps Margaret preferred it that way. I notice that she never corrected anyone, even during the first romantic flush of marriage, when you'd think that she would love hearing the sound of her new name.

Corey, you're right about the timing. So that leaves the question of "Where was Winchester in this ep?" More importantly, why was there a sign with the word "Swamp" on it by Charles' bunk?

That's why it bugs me. You'd think she'd want to be called "Mrs. Penobscot". Remember there were times (well, one at least) when she and Frank were still an item, she referred to herself as "Mrs. Frank Burns". ("Just trying it on.")

As I'm not familiar with military protocol - and thus have no idea whether it's proper military protocol for Margaret to still be called "Major Houlihan" - and in lieu of any explanation in series, I'll probably still keep noting instances where her married name is not used.

BJ seems a little too confident that Bardonara will walk back to the 4077th after he runs out of gas. Seems likely Bardonara could've been picked up by someone else going his way. BJ was drunk, but getting stuck with Bardonara's $500 hotel bill (which is $3300 in today's dollars) would seem to cause more concern.

I should mention that Leo Bardonaro was played by James Cromwell...

On a ME-TV trivia page that appeared in my newsfeed recently, it was said that James Cromwell was one of the top candidates for the role of BJ.
