Fallen Idol

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Six: Fallen Idol

Plot: Hawkeye persuades Radar to go into Seoul to lose his virginity, but Radar is wounded during the trip. Hawkeye operates, but, full of guilt, gets very drunk and later has to abandon a patient in OR to be sick. He and Radar have a falling out, but later patch things up. Radar receives a Purple Heart.

Another episode where Hawkeye's immaturity is shown. He spends the first part of the episode in self pity and then tears into Radar. I agree that Radar was out of line with his speech. But that did not justify the character's reaction.

By Benn on Thursday, March 21, 2002 - 9:58 pm:

Was Radar still a virgin by the time of this episode? The events of "The Army-Navy Game" and "Springtime" hint otherwise.

This is the second time Hawkeye had to operate on Radar. On the first occasion, Pierce took out O'Reilly's appendix.

When he had to go throw up, why does Hawkeye exit through the doors leading to the Company Clerk's office. Directly behind him, were the doors leading outside.

How did Radar get a three day to Tokyo without Potter knowing? It certainly seems completely out of character for Radar to leave camp without his C.O. being aware of it.

After Father Mulcahy kicked the stove in The Swamp, he says he may have broken his toes. Why didn't B.J. or Hawkeye offer to check his foot?

If you ask me, it almost looks like B.J. is smiling while Potter is chewing Hawkeye out. If I didn't know any better, I'd almost swear Hunnicutt was enjoying it.

Why send Radar all the way to Tokyo? From the implications, the Pink Pagoda is a cathouse. In later episodes we see that prostitutes frequent Rosie's. So why not give Radar a condom or two and send him to Rosie's?

Too close to home, perhaps?

I always remember that "Springtime" episode.
"I don't know. I think I've been slaked."

Lost his virginity twice and left the show still pure. Gotta be a record.

More like three times, D.K. In "The Army-Navy Game" there's a scene where Radar approaches a nurse outside of Post-Op. He says, "Lt., I have a confession to make. For a long time, I have worshipped you from below. And I was wondering if, what with the bombs going off and the one that hasn't yet, if you'd like to check out the Supply Tent with me. Wish I could I wink." (More or less. I may have parts of the speech wrong.) The Lt. replied, "You don't have to wink, Radar." She then took Walter by the hand to take him to the Supply Tent. Somehing happened. The episode ends with Radar attempting to try his luck again with another nurse who turns out to be Klinger.

So when was the third time? I didn't think that Radar had actually made it to Seoul before he was wounded.

By Benn on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 10:40 am:

Oh god. That's right. There were only two times. My bad.

By D.K. Henderson on Monday, October 14, 2002 - 5:19 am:

I liked the scene where Radar drove in among some soldiers (presumably just before they were attacked). "Oh, I'm going in to Seoul to...ah...
hrrrmp." "It's been so long since I've been to Seoul to...hrrmph...I've forgotten what it's like."

How did the Father even possibly break his toe??? It is clear that he kicks the stove with the side of his foot... between the boot and the side footed kick, his toe seems quite safe.

Running down these posts, I just realized--when Hawkeye operated on Radar for the first time, I believe that it was for tonsils, not his appendix. It was the episode with the bathtub.

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 5:47 am:

The main part that gets cut for syndication is the scene at Rosie's. We don't actually see Hawkeye drinking, we see him, B.J, and Rosie dozing in the empty bar, having drunk everyone else out the door. (BTW, if B.J. had been drinking, it was much more lightly than Hawkeye.) B.J. manages to get Hawkeye out of the bar, commenting that Hawkeye had several times during the evening burst into song--"Over the Rainbow", I believe. They arrive back at the Swamp with Hawkeye singing it again, and Charles angrily comments that he has been awakened several times that evening by Hawkeye's singing. (Just how far is the Swamp from Rosie's? Hawkeye must have been singing really loud.)

Another part that is cut down is the conversation Radar and Klinger have, just before the "incident" with Radar and Hawkeye.

Another place that I had forgotten about was after Hawkeye had attempted to apologize and had gotten chewed out by Radar. He was sitting in the office, slumped on Radar's cot, when Charles came in. Rather than yelling at him, as everyone else had been doing, Charles seemed to commiserate with him, telling Hawkeye that he had once done something similar, a pecadillo that he deeply regretted--of course, he was only fourteen at the time, while Hawkeye had been a grown man. Exit Charles.

Col. Potter comments to Radar that he and Hawkeye would doubtless make up in the next week or so, and in fact they did reconcile amazingly quickly--of course, you really can't tell how long it has been. Long enough for Radar to become "ambulatory", but how long would that be?

I always like the ending of this one, when Hawkeye salutes Radar ("You're not going to kiss me, are you?")

By Benn on Thursday, March 10, 2005 - 11:43 pm:

I'm not sure if this holds true for the season premiere, but the opening theme in this ep is of a different arrangement.

One thing that occurs to me in rewatching this ep: Is it possible that Hawkeye was just getting fed up with listening to Radar complain about being a virgin? Surely, he's heard the corporal make the complaint before? (Actually, he has. "The Chosen People" has but one hint of it.) This might explain why Hawkeye kept pushing Radar to go to the Pink Pagoda. He was simply tired of listening to Radar complain that he's still a virgin ("Springtime" and "The Army-Navy Game" notwithstanding).

B.J. manages to get Hawkeye out of the bar, commenting that Hawkeye had several times during the evening burst into song--"Over the Rainbow", I believe. In OR, Hawkeye has to go throw up while in the middle of an operation. Charles takes over for him. After crowing about "How the mighty have fallen", listen closely and you can hear Charles start to hum "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

When confronting Radar in Post Op after the upchuck incident, Pierce mentions something about having his "blood coming out of a bottle of scotch." Radar replies "I wouldn't know about that." This implies that Corporal O'Riley has never been drunk. Right. He was drunk in "Private Charles Lamb", "The Gun" and was also seen drinking in at least one other ep, "Chief Surgeon, Who?" I'd imagine that Radar has had at least one hangover from those times. (Of course, by this point, those times have been retconned out of the series, so that Radar's liver was once again a virgin.)

After being chewed out by Margaret, Father Mulcahy and Potter, Hawkeye returns to Post-Op. The nurse on duty asks Hawkeye if he's going to talk to Radar again. Pierce tells her he just wants to sit with him for awhile. He then proceeds to start talking to the Corporal.

Col. Potter comments to Radar that he and Hawkeye would doubtless make up in the next week or so, and in fact they did reconcile amazingly quickly--of course, you really can't tell how long it has been. Long enough for Radar to become "ambulatory", but how long would that be? - D.K. Henderson, part II

One week. Judging by what Potter tells Radar. Here's the exact quote: "Look, next week when you're up and walking around, you may run into Hawkeye..." Of course, the Colonel could have said that on a Friday...

It sure took Rosie awhile to bring the beer for Hawkeye and the Grape Nehi for Radar, didn't it? Did she have to open a fresh case for the beverages? Go down the road to get them?

Actually, since "None Like It Hot" (the tonsilitis ep) is a seventh season ep, this is the first time Hawkeye operated on Radar. For the record, Henry was the one who removed Radar's appendix.
