Movie Tonight

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Five: Movie Tonight
By D.K. Henderson on Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - 2:41 pm:

Plot: Tensions and tempers are strained at the 4077th, and Col. Potter tries to cure it with a showing of "My Darling Clementine." The movie keeps breaking down, so everyone improvises their own entertainment.

The sub-plot with the nurses is cut. There's a scene where Hawkeye goes to the nurses' tent to get a date. They then inform him, they're going to a party hosted by a general. This refered to later in the episode.

When did "jocularity" become Mulcahy's catchphrase? The only time I remember him saying "jocularity" is much later in the series. Incidentally, I thought Radar did the best impersonation of Mulcahy. However, Radar's Jack Benny could use some work.

This is the second time this season (I think) that the Pink Pagoda is mentioned. Both times, it is in connection with Margeret. ("The Korean Surgeon" is the other one."

Does anyone know what Hawkeye is saying during Margeret's song. All close caption says is that it's in French.

Did you notice that Radar's John Wayne impersonation was from a movie after the year this one was set in (1952, right)?

By Benn Allen on Saturday, July 22, 2000 - 10:40 pm:

The exact movie is 1963's "McLintock". Incidentally, Radar doesn't quote the Duke exactly. I saw it on Channel 13, one of Dallas' PBS stations last Saturday.

By Lilith on Sunday, July 23, 2000 - 1:20 am:

I believe the quote is "...but I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna do it. The hell I'm not!" LOL, I think Radar said "I'm not gonna hit you..." By the by, McLintock is a great movie. Maureen O'Hara did a great job.

By ScottN on Sunday, July 23, 2000 - 11:55 am:

I thought it was, in fact "hit" in the quote, and I thought the quote was from "Brannigan".

I also thought it was "... I ain't gonna hit ya..."

By ScottN on Sunday, July 23, 2000 - 11:58 am:

Oops! I should check my facts first. It IS McLintock.
Just went to IMDB... According to IMDB, here's the quote:

Quote:

McLintock: I won't hitcha... I won't... The hell I won't!
[Hits him.]

In at least one ep, we're told that there are 200 people assigned to the 4077th. The Mess Tent could not have contained that many people. Those in the Mess Tent are the lucky ones. As badly spliced as the film was, they're probably the only ones who saw My Darling Clementine. The rest of the camp had to do without it I would assume.

It seems in most eps, there is always a doctor on duty in Post Op. Hawkeye, B.J., Potter and Burns were all in the Mess Tent watching the movie. Who was in charge of Post-Op?

Yeah, but...a)The mess tent would've had to hold at least a healthy proportion of those 200 people, given that barring casualties it seems meals are served at set times; and b)Not everybody in the whole entire 4077th would've showed up for the movie, would they? Surely some new magazines or letters had just arrived and needed reading, or some of the nurses had to wash their hair, or some couples had dates...Or did the Colonel make movie-watching mandatory that night?

By Benn on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 9:54 pm:

True, but the Mess Tent has never looked like it could hold 200 people. Plus in many eps it looks like people show up whenever they feel like it or get hungry. But then again, it's possible the camp is fed in shifts, much like it is in schools.

"Or did the Colonel make movie-watching mandatory that night?"

Practically. He was promoting the film as a morale booster. After the film broke down the first time, the people in the Mess Tent tried to leave. Potter did order them to stay.

By Benn on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 10:35 pm:

I should point out Kerrie, I wasn't saying that everyone saw the movie. Only those in the Mess Tent got to. I assume that because of how badly spliced the film was. Obviously there were people on guard duty, KP, in the motor pool, perhaps, and certainly in Post-Op. The 4077th surely had many duties that needed to be performed at all hours of the days. That's why (theoretically) the PA would call for "both shifts" when wounded would arrive.

The scene where they are cleaning up the OR is cut somewhat. Margaret scolds her nurses and then speaks quietly with Nurse Bigelow, and Klinger yells several times about people messing up his clean floor, not just once.

I wonder...did Hawkeye complain about Peg's apple pie just to be argumentative? B.J. seemed to be enjoying it, and it didn't look as though he were pretending to like it just for Hawkeye's benefit.

Hawkeye goes to the nurses' tent, only to find that they are going to Icorps for a party...wine, tablecloths, silverware...and pilots. Hawkeye decides to leave with dignity, which he does by getting down on his knees and crawling out the door! He seems to ignore the fact that there were other nurses, (Kellye, at least) who were not invited to the party.

There is also a scene where Frank goes to Margaret's tent to ask if she will sit with him during the movie. Margaret agrees, much to his surprise. He points out that they can still be friends. Margaret is quite amiable, until Frank suggests that they come back after the movie to play "war games". (Margaret would hide under the covers and pretend that it was a tent, and Frank would be a bomb and drop on her.) Margaret tells him to face the fact that he lost, and Donald won. Frank starts making fun of Donald's last name. "Lt. Col. Penobscot, and here's Mrs. Penobscot, and all the little Penobscots...Huey, Louey, and Dewey." Margaret grabs her whip, and Frank beats a hasty exit.

The uncut version does not really indicate any long passages of time during the movie, so they apparently see very little of it. They see the beginning, then jump to a rainy night scene at a hotel, then jump to a quick fight scene, presumably at a saloon, jump again to an outdoor dance, and finally jump to the O.K. corral. Possibly a total of five minutes.

Frank's "death scene" was a typical, childish exaggeration, but I notice that he did help someone to their feet before running out of the mess tent.

The final scene is in OR, where Potter starts softly singing, and everyone joins in.

They should have ordered the DVD. Hey, what's another anachronism for these guys? Of course, with their luck, it probably would have stuck and skipped all over the place.

The salt and pepper shakers on the table that Hawkeye, B.J., Klinger and Father Mulcahy are sitting at change places in two different shots.

Isn’t it interesting how during the times that the film is down, only the stars of the show get to sing solo verses of “Gee Mom I Wanna Go Home” and do Father Mulcahy impersonations? (The one exception is the nurses who were supposed to go the “I” Corp party. They got to do a verse of “Gee Mom”.) I guess Goldberg, Kellye and the others just weren’t good enough to get to participate.

So, I'm listening to a Leadbelly CD I got Friday. One of the tracks on it is called "Army Life". Guess what? It's the same one the MASHers sing in this ep. Seems it's a traditional tune.

These are the lyrics Leadbelly sings (best as I can make 'em out):

"The clothes that they give you
They say they are mighty fine.
Me and all my buddies
Could fit into one of mine.

"CHORUS: Oh I don't want no more of army life
Jesus* I wanna go home.

"The shoes that they give you
They say they mighty fine.
Ask for number 7
And boy they'll give you number nine.

CHORUS

"The hot dogs that they give you
They say are mighty fine.
One rolled off the table.
Boy it started marchin time (?)**

CHORUS

"The cold beer that they give you
Say it was mighty fine.
It's good for cuts and bruises
Boy, it's just like iodine.

CHORUS

"The biscuit that they give you
They say it was mighty fine.
One jumped off the table an
And boy it knocked down a pal of mine.

CHORUS

"The money that they give you
They say it was mighty fine.
Ask for fifty dollars,
Boy, they'll take back forty-nine.

CHORUS"

This site provide some child-friendly lyrics to the song.

*That's what it sounds like to me. It could also be "Gee, but..."

**Near as I can make out the words. I'm probably wrong.
