Plot: Nurse Carrie Donvan receives a "Dear Jane" letter from her husband. When B.J. attempts to comfort her, things go too far and he is overcome with guilt feelings. Hawkeye persuades him not to confess to Peg and he later clears the air with Donovan.

I've always wondered about this episode. How far did Hunnicut and Donovan go? Did they have sex, or was it a simple kiss. If it was a kiss, can't really see B.J. beating up himself like he does in this episode.

I had always assumed the BJ did have sex with Carrie Donovan.

Normally Post-Op is seen only through the one wall. In this ep, we get a glimpse of the wall the camera is normally located. It's behind B.J. when talks to Donovan at the Post-Op desk.

Apparently Donovan has managed to get her own tent. Either that or her tent-mate works another shift.

This, of course, is the first time B.J. is unfaithful to his wife. On both occasions Hawkeye tries his luck with the woman who has eyes only for Hunnicutt and both times he is soundly rebuffed.

Donovan apparently transfered from the 4077th after all. We never see her in another episode.

Actually, this is the only time that BJ is really unfaithful. The other time (with Aggie O'Shay) he was extreamly tempted, but didn't give in.

The secondary plot has Margaret worrying about Donald, who hasn't written in four days. Turns out that he's in the hospital. There is a scene where Margaret tries to wake up Radar to call Tokyo. Radar mutters, "Betty!" and hauls Margaret down for a kiss. Margaret and Radar then react as you would expect. Potter comes in while Radar is placing the call. Donald is not accepting any calls, and Margaret, frantic, tells Radar to tell the operator to have him call Margaret, who's worried sick, loves him, kiss kiss kiss. Radar transfers the message faithfully, right down to the kissy sounds, at which point he stops and looks exasperated with himself. Margaret begs Potter to let her go to Tokyo, but Potter is not sending his head nurse away just to find out that Donald "has a pimple on his butt." He then asks where Radar got the lipstick. Radar starts to reply, then remembers that he promised not to tell anyone. Margaret yells at him, then tells Potter that it was an accident and quickly leaves. Potter gives Radar a raunchy grin and suggests that "Romeo" get back to bed.

The final scene has Margaret finally reaching Donald, to find that he suffered a hernia climbing a rope. Potter, who had been sent out of the room and called back, is sent out again, and comments that Donald will be out of action for four weeks. Margaret finds that it is actually a double hernia, and Potter calls from his office, "Eight weeks!" We leave Margaret scolding Donald for not taking better care. After all, "you're an engaged person now...."

Shortly after Donovan turns down a date with Hawkeye, there’s a scene where Pierce and Hunnicutt are changing clothes after 7 and a half hours of surgery. On the wall behind them is a series of hooks for the Officers coats. There’s a hook for B.J., Hawkeye, Potter and Burns. Then on the left of the screen are at least two more hooks. Are these two other doctors that we never see in the series?

During the “morning after” scene in the Mess Tent, Donovan says, “Hello” to B.J. and her hands are on either side of her tray. In the close-up, her hands are clasped together. When the camera pulls out of the close-up, the hands which were just under her chin are once again on either side of her tray.

When B.J. is discussing his infidelity with Hawkeye, the right side of his robe is covered in shadows. When the camera angle changes to a close-up, the pattern of shadows is noticeably different. It’s not as dark on his right side. This holds true for the shadows on Hawkeye’s left hand side.

"Mule fritters!"
