The Colonel's Horse

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Five: The Colonel's Horse

Plot A: While Col. Potter is in Tokyo, his horse develops colic.
Plot B: Margaret has a "chronic" appendix, but does not want Frank to do the surgery when it becomes acute.

Klinger in this episode was one of the winners in the camp's "Abbott & Costello Lookalike Contest". I can't help wonder which of the two he was supposed to resemble. (For that matter, which one did Colonel Potter think he looked like?)

It's almost surprising that Radar doesn't know who King Kong is. I think Kong by that point had become somewhat iconic. Not to mention all the Godzilla movies the Corporal has seen (Which is nit in itself. At the time Radar was assigned to the 4077th, the only Godzilla movie Walter could've seen was... none. The first Godzilla debuted in '56; three years after the end of the Korean War!)

I am not sure which one Klinger thought he was, but Potter's response as he was leaving to Tokyo (Who's on first... what's on second) says he thought he was a winner for Abbott (BTW who was partnered with him to be his Costello?)

Was there something cut out in syndication that explained why Klinger did the one scene where he claimed to be "so depressed?"

In the uncut version, when Potter returns and is told that his mare is "clean as a whistle, inside and out!" he goes to his office and finds Klinger curled up on his desk. Potter makes a comment that Klinger's depression has now left him completely unfunctional, then pulls out a form and begins preparing a medical discharge. Klinger gets up and starts singing and dancing, only to stop short and say something like, "I blew it, didn't I?" Potter agrees and tears up the form. He tells Klinger to cheer up, as he did in fact buy the material Klinger requested--in red. Klinger brightens up, and as he's going out the door, Potter tells him that he would like Klinger to do his dance number for the wounded.

In the C.O. Office, Colonel Potter’s Good Conduct Medal (I believe that’s what it is) appears to have been moved. It’s shifted more to the right of the screen than is normal. Usually you see it on the left of the screen. It also looks like some of the horse photos have been moved.

This is the second episode this season to mention Lou Costello.

There’s a minor edit in the scene where Margaret asks Colonel Potter to arrange to have Hawkeye operate on her appendix. It’s during this scene that the winner of the Abbott and Costello lookalike contest is announced. It’s Klinger and Korean POW, Chang Suk Yin. After Margaret leaves the Colonel’s tent, over the P.A. is the announcement that Chang Suk Yin has escaped. Potter doesn’t look happy about the news. Wonder who got reprimanded for it?

Why does Hawkeye object so much about checking out Sophie? It’s not the first time Radar’s asked him to. The first time was in “Dear Mildred”.

Because of B.J.’s reference to Easter, this ep probably takes place in May or June of 1953.

How does Hawkeye know the theme to The Mickey Mouse Club, a show that would not debut until two years after the war? (“M-O-U-S-E”)

The scene where everyone calls out "Ready", "Turn it on", etc. echoes a similar scene in "Bug Out". ("Get ready for the prayer!")

After that, Frank enters the office and complains to Potter that Pierce committed six violations of Army protocol. The first one the Major tells Colonel Potter about is that Hawkeye made a face at the Major in the Mess Tent. Potter deciding he doesn't need to hear the other five, informs Frank that he'll take the appropriate action. He's going to go to sleep. After Burns leaves, Potter makes a similar face at Burns' back.

This episode marks the second time B.J. has had to act as Hawkeye's gas passer. ("Bug Out" [again] was the first time.) Hasn't the 4077th gotten an anathesiologist since Ugly John left? You'd think the unit would have someone who specilizes in that.

Why does Margaret want Hawkeye to operate on her? Is it because he's chief surgeon? B.J. would be just as skilled at the operation as Pierce. Plus with Hunnicutt she wouldn't have to put up with all the sexual innuendoes. So why Pierce?

When Potter tells Pierce that Margaret wants him (Pierce) to operate on her (instead of Burns) if her appendix hots up, why does Potter give Radar a glance for privacy? Seems it wouldn't be such a touchy issue (either that Margaret has a bad appendix or that she doesn't want Frank to operate on her).

By the way, Greg, welcome to Nitcentral! It's nice to have another M*A*S*H fan posting on these boards. Looking forward to reading more posts from you.

With Margaret lying on the operating table, BJ tells her to take a deep breath and puts the gas mask over her mouth. Hawkeye then immediately says "lets have some fun" and begins the first incision. Anesthetics, especially of the inhaled gaseous type, take a bit longer than that to act.
