The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Five: The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan

Plot: Margaret goes off to help deliver a baby, and Klinger forgets to pass on the news. Everyone becomes convinced that she's been kidnapped, and Col. Flagg comes in to deal with the matter, in his own fashion.

I wonder if Klinger had any disciplinary action taken against him for failing to report Margaret's whereabouts? If I were Potter, I would be most displeased with Klinger!

In this ep, Margaret is shown to be able to speak Korean. This talent will disappear in later episode. Or reappear as the script demands it.

If she was accustomed to helping out with the local pregnant women (she's done classes for them) she probably would have picked up some relevant phrases.

I've never understood why Margaret (and Potter) would use Radar as the demonstration model in the childbirth classes. Wouldn't it be more sensible to use one of the other nurses? You'd also think that Radar would be utterly mortified at the prospect.

'Nother point--I think that they got the sound effects mixed up at the end. It was pretty pointless for Flagg to make that odd-sounding bellow before he hurled himself out the window. Afterwards (when the "wind" had broken his leg) would have been more sensible.

The search for Margaret began when Potter, Nurse Abel and Radar found they couldn't read her writing well enough to find out when a certain patient had last received morphine. It was quite a long time before the Major showed back up at the unit (a day). What did they do for that wounded soldier in the meantime?

Surely after all those months at the 4077th, Hawkeye, Frank, someone would have learned how to read her writing.

This is what, the fourth time Flagg has been to the 4077th, and he still doesn't know Hawkeye's name? Hawk's been there all four times. (Flagg called Hawkeye "Hunnicutt".)

Wouldn't the news that Major Houlihan was missing spread throughout the camp? If so, why hadn't Klinger heard about it? You'd think he would then come forward with the information that Margaret had gone to help deliver a baby after hearing the rumors.

In the novel, Hawkeye was about 28 years old. If the TV character's age is meant to be about the same, then Pierce's line about losing his virginity 20 years ago is fairly interesting.

When Flagg leaps out the window, we hear the sound effects of glass breaking. I thought the windows to Potter's office was made of the same material as the ones in O.R. If so, then it shouldn't make any noise. In another ep, Hawkeye took a scalpel to one of the O.R. windows to let the cold in to help cool off a patient. The panes of the window were very definitely plastic sheets. Shouldn't the windows in Potter's office be the same material?

The tag to this ep has been cut for syndication. In it, Pierce remembers seeing Flagg as a chorus girl at the Sands.

"Mule fritters!"
