Lt. Radar O'Reilly

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Five: Lt. Radar O'Reilly
By D.K. Henderson on Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - 9:47 am:

Plot: Caught short at a poker game, Master Sgt. Woodruff offers a free promotion instead, and the doctors take him up on it, having Radar promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. Radar finds that officers' country is not what he expected.

Nit: Hawkeye makes a comment about "promoting" Potter's horse "from a gelding to a stud". Potter's horse is a female, so she this comment would not apply to her.

By D.K. Henderson on Sunday, June 04, 2000 - 3:58 pm:

The horse was originally male. Somewhere along the way, like Data's cat Spot, it became female.

This is the second time that Hawkeye and B.J. play poker with someone who cannot pay their tab. Each time, Pierce (and/or Hunnicut) would accept something else instead of money. (It'll happen once more in the series.)

Hasn't Klinger already acted as Company Clerk before this ep? Then why does Radar have teach Klinger how to do the job?

When Potter deicides to call I-CORP to find out if Radar's promotion is real, Hawkeye and B.J. tell him who to talk to. Normally, the Colonel knows who he needs to contact. I wonder if Potter asked for Woodruff when he tried to get Father Mulcahy his promotion? Might be why it took so long for the Padre to be promoted.

This is the second "promotion" Radar receives in the series. The first one was in the "Welcome to Korea" two-parter. In that ep, he's promoted to "Corporal Captain".

By Benn on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 1:20 am:

If Sgt. Woodruff owed B.J. $35 from the previous game, why did they let the Sargeant play this week without verifying that he had enough money?

The position of Lt. Baker's head seem to change from shot to shot when she's hitting on Radar. She also seems to be closer to the corporal's face in some shots.

If the 4077th has a barber, why is Klinger cutting Colonel Potter's hair? Was the regular barber on leave?

If the orders "promoting" Radar come from "R.J. Meighan, Commanding Officer, 'I' Corp", why does Potter accept Pierce and Hunnicutt's advice to contact Woodruff? Why doesn't he just get in touch with Meighan? (This is an addendum to my earlier nitpick. It should be noted that I was wrong and Potter doesn't ask the Captains whom he should contact. They volunteer the info.)

Just a note: Radar's serial number is 3911810.

You'd think Potter would be a little more suspicious of Pierce and Hunnicutt when they try to disuade the Colonel from checking out the promotion.

Well, B.J. does say "That'd be unusual."

IIRC, officers have to pay for their uniforms. Was Radar ever reimbursed for the cost of his uniforms? Wonder if he kept them after he was demoted?

After Radar was promoted, where did he sleep? We can assume from his talk with Hawkeye and B.J. that he still sleeps with his teddy bear. But you'd think he wouldn't do so unless he had privacy. Otherwise, I'd think he'd feel too embarrassed. So where was Radar bunking?

BTW, what exactly would the 4077 need with an officer who wasn't a part of the medical staff? What was Radar's job as a Lt?

"Mule fritters!"
