Yankee Doodle Doctor

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season One: Yankee Doodle Doctor
By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, February 08, 2000 - 5:07 pm:

A brigadier general wants to make a propaganda film of the 4077th. Disliking the results, Hawkeye and Trapper destroy it and make their own version.

I thought that Hawkeye and Trapper did charming impersonations of Groucho and Harpo.

Clayton's take we see filmed in the beginning is not the take used in the final print. In the opening, he says the line "as it is to me." In the final movie, he says "as it was to me." I may have that backward.

Much of Hawkeye's and Trapper's re-filming of "Yankee Doodle Doctor" is left on the cutting room floor thanks to syndication.

IIRC, Margaret doesn't appear in this episode. It's a shame, in a way. If Hot Lips was in it. this ep would've marked the second time that Loretta Swit and Ed Flanders had worked together on a TV show. Swit and Flanders both guest-starred in the Hawaii Five-O episode, "While You're At It, Bring In the Moon".

By Homer J. Simpson on Monday, January 07, 2002 - 10:02 pm:

Stu pid Flanders!

I'm sorry. Loretta Swit is in this episode. But she does not share any scenes with Ed Flanders.

With this episode General Barker is replaced by General Crandall Clayton. Apparently TPTB were trying to create General who would be a recurring character for the series. It never happened.

This is Nurse Cutler's second appearance in the series.

In our first view of the 4077th in this ep, we see Hawkeye and Trapper dancing together. This is cut from syndication. As a matter of fact in syndication the scene opens with the arrival of Henry and Lt. Bricker.

Whoa! Frank shaves in this episode. He is now one step closer to the Frank Burns we will see for the rest of his stay in the series.

I believe another scene cut involves Bricker filming in the OR. Was the camera sterilized?

Watch Margaret as Frank reads his narration for Hawkeye and Trapper. She has it memorized.

Behind Frank is a box by the door to the Swamp. Normally a picture of his mother is in that box. In this ep, the picture is on a table by Burns' bed. In the box appears to be Frank's Bible and a radio. Later in the ep, the radio is missing from the box.

While Frank is reading the narration to Yankee Doodle Doctor, you can see a record player behind Pierce and McIntyre. I wonder who it belongs to? When Charles shows up with his, it seemed like his was the only one in camp. Other than the jukebox in the Officer's Club, that is. Then again, that record player does look like Charles'.

According to this episode, Radar has worn glasses since he was two. This revelation is made when Bricker is filming the scene with Henry and Radar. Incidentally, some of this scene is cut for syndication.

That red-head nurse Bricker is talking to in the Mess Tent is smoking a cigarette. Rarely do you see a character smoke a cigarette on M*A*S*H. Cigars are another matter.

When Radar gets Bricker interested in talking about his career, it's nighttime. There's a cut to Hawkeye and Trapper exposing the film. I'm guessing it's still nighttime. Cut back to Radar and Bricker and it's now daylight. No wonder Radar looks so bored & annoyed. Bricker won't shut up!

When shooting the shot of Hawkeye, Trapper and Radar holding up the 4077th banner, the cameraman gets in real close. However, the final film reflects no such close up or angle. The cameraman moving in close is deleted in syndication.

Also deleted is the scene where Nurse Cutler, Radar, Hawkeye and Trapper get ready to film the scene of Yankee Doodle Doctor's first appearance. (It's the scene where Radar is carried off the truck on a stretcher.)

Part of the last tag is cut, too.

The windows in Henry's office are still opaque. I guess this because the TPTB didn't want to have to create a view outside the windows.
