The Moose

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season One: The Moose

Plot: A sergeant turns up with a Korean girl he bought from her family. Hawkeye wins her in a fixed poker game and then tries to set her free.

I was surprised that the sergeant would pay $500 for Yung Hee, and then "not make monkey business" with her. I mean, if you've already got a mind set that sees nothing wrong in slavery, then why wouldn't you take it all the way?

What sort of soldier is Baker-slob-san that he can just casually wander into the 4077th and set up temporary housekeeping there? If he was on R & R, then surely Seoul would have been a more likely place to visit.

Frank was in Tokyo, but I'm surprised Margaret or someone didn't put up a fuss about giving Army issue clothing to a civilian.

Why does Sgt. Baker assume Hawkeye outranks him when they first meet? Pierce was not wearing any command insignia.

If the Army will bust a guy for owning a moose, why do the Swampmen not press charges?

Once again, Radar, who does not drink (according to later episodesin the series), is drinking a martini.

The closest to an explanation is that Baker is a "transient". Henry refers to Baker's Colonel having a moose. This muddies the water all the more, because if Baker is under someone else's command, then what, indeed, is he doing in the 4077th? What exactly is meant by "transient" anyway?

The poker game presents a number of problems. The seating arrangements, at first, are such that Ugly John should be able to see Hawkeye's hand. Moreover, Hawkeye's lucky that Baker holds his cards in such a way that Radar can see them. Wonder how they knew he held them like that?

Once again Hawkeye mentions he has a sister. He explains betting so heavily on a three-of-a-kind because he was saving to put his sister through barber college.

However... After winning Young Hi, Hawkeye rehearses letters to his dad. The second letter he began, "Dear Dad -- I know you always wished I had a sister..." Well, which is it? Hawkeye has a sister or doesn't he? (He doesn't according to later episodes.)

Why does Hawkeye accept an I.O.U. from Baker before winning all of the Sargeant's money?

The nurse Hawkeye is with in the minefield (Leslie?) can later be seen sitting with Trapper in the Mess Tent.

After Hawkeye frees Young Hi, she and brother, Benny, discuss her future. In English. Why don't they speak in Korean? So the Captains would know their plans?

At the ep's end Spearchucker and Trapper are heading for the showers. The question is where did they come from? It wasn't the Swamp. They pass their tent on the way to the showers. And the Swamp is far off in the background.

I always assumed that Hawkeye was being a smartalec when refering to his sister in these episodes.

By Benn (Benn) on Sunday, January 13, 2002 - 4:21 pm:

I don't think so, Merat. In one ep, Hawkeye said he got a sweater in the mail. He said it was from his sister. I think in one Dear Dad letter Hawkeye sends his love to his Mom and sister.

Hrm, good points. Think the Voyager PTB used one of their endless time anomalies to go back and screw up M*A*S*H*'s continuity too?

By Benn (Benn) on Sunday, January 13, 2002 - 8:37 pm:

I hope not. Although, seeing Hawkeye hit on Seven of Nine would be priceless.

Yeah, it would. Actually, I did once find a M*A*S*H/ST:TOS crossover fanfic that had Kirk & Spock end up in the 4077th's brig (Frank Burns, natch.) Unfortunately it was so badly written I gave up reading about halfway in.

What exactly is meant by "transient" anyway?

Presumably that he was attached to the 4077th for only a specific (probably short) length of time, or to perform a specific duty. Filling in for a corpsman on leave, or something?

I don't want to think about that too deeply. I'm afraid I'll start having nightmares. But does this "writer" have any idea how ineffectual the 4077th's brig would be in holding Kirk & Spock? (I don't even remember there ever being a brig for that matter. Everyone was always placed under house arrest.)

Very likely. In "Henry, Please Come Home", Burns tells Colonel Blake he'll have to fill out a transient surgeon form before Henry can do an exploratory on Radar.

By ScottN on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 - 9:29 am:

The 4077th is an Army unit, and therefore wouldn't have a brig. If it did have a prison, it would be referred to as "the stockade". The Navy and Marines use a brig.
