Plot: Frank Burns complains after Hawkeye is appointed Chief Surgeon, and a general (Sorrell Brooke) turns up to investigate.

Great dialogue:

General: "May I make a suggestion about Major Burns? Give him a high colonic and send him on a ten mile hike!"
Trapper: "With full pack."
General: "Nice touch."

If I'm not mistaken, the lines begining Hawkeye: "Okay Dad, I'm gonna sandbag ya." is taken from the original novel. I'm about to re-read it for the upteenth millionth time, so I'll know for sure later.

The lines beginning with "Okay Dad, I'm gonna sand bag you" are taken from Hooker's novel.

Once again, clean cut Frank Burns appears unshaven. At least this time, he has his shirt properly buttoned.

This episode establishes that Frank Burns was a draftee. He makes mention of being "called up" for duty.

Without realizing Major Burns is right behind him, Colonel Blake says "Frank Burns has to be the biggest horse's patoot..." Burns responds, "You really think so?" Then there is humming. According to close captioning, Radar's the one who's doing the humming. He isn't. It's definitely Henry.

Among Burns' complaints against Captain Pierce is that Hawkeye calls the Major by his first name. Major Burns tells Blake, "It's not allowed, Henry." (Emphasis mine.) Bit hypocritical of the Major, doncha think?

This is the first episode in which we see the doll on Henry's desk.

After Pierce is appointed Chief Surgeon, Frank storms into Margaret's tent (this is the first appearance of the tent, I believe). In an establishing shot we see Hot Lips dying her hair with hydrogen peroxide. When Frank barges in on her, Margaret explains she's using the peroxide to treat a cut on her head. In a later episode, Frank would once again walk in on Magaret dying her hair. This time Frank asks her, "Did you cut your head again?" Does it ever occur to Ferret Face to wonder how Margaret keeps "cutting her head"? Nice continuity, though.

While the inauguration party is getting started, Spearchucker walks to the throne to pin up a picture of Chief Surgeon Hawkeye Pierce. I'd love to know how Captain Jones got that picture of Hawkeye. It's a picture of Pierce emerging from Lt. Dish's duffel bag to seduce her (from the pilot episode).

Judging by General Barker's reaction to Margaret, Hot Lips and the General must have had a..."liason" between this ep and "Requiem For a Lightweight". Both of them sure act like they've had intimate relations.

General Barker barges into the poker game in the Swamp. Ugly John salutes the General. Kaplan salutes the General. Trapper salutes the General. Waitaminnit! Trapper saluted the general?!

Interesting. The jeep General Barker arrives in, is one of the 4077th's jeeps.

Hawkeye makes yet another reference to his sister. Said he's playing poker to get the money to buy a truss for her. Once again, later episodes reveal Pierce to be an only child.

When General Barker asks the soldier with the nurse under coat where Colonel Blake is, the soldier directs the General to the C.O. office. Is Henry normally in his office that late at night?

Once again, we see Radar drinking alcohol. He's also smoking a cigar. In the Potter years, Radar refuses a cigar for fear it'll stunt his growth.

In looking for Henry Blake, General just barges into any ol' tent. He's lucky he doesn't commit coitus interruptus. In this deleted scene, he almost does. Deleted from this ep is a scene who Barker barges in on Ginger Bayliss and Spearchucker playing strip domino. When Barker leaves the tent, he tells the two to go to bed.

The interior of Henry's tent is a lot different from Potter's. Henry's tent seems bigger than Colonel Potter's. It has another room to it.

When Barker first encounters Hawkeye, it's one in the morning. Hawkeye told the General he planned to operate at around 3 in the morning. Did General Barker really spend two hours looking for Colonel Blake? Sure doesn't seem like it.

Ginger disobeyed General Barker's orders to "go to bed". She's the nurse assisting Hawkeye and Trapper.

Also cut is a final OR scene where Frank humbly asks Hawkeye for help with a patient.

Kaplan, incidentally, was played by Jack Riley. Riley was, of course, better known as Eliot Carlin on The Bob Newhart Show.

Nah, its Radar. If you watch when they cut back to him, his mouth is moving along with the humming. I will agree that the sound is wanky there though.

Huh. I'd've sworn it's Henry. I'll have to rewatch it.

By Benn on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 - 5:59 pm:

Merat, I think you're right. I guess it is Radar humming. I've always thought it was Henry who was nervously humming, though. Hmm.

By Merat on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 - 6:37 pm:

Thats probably because Henry has this look on his face that makes it look like hes humming, but it definitly is Radar. :)

A couple of continuity gaffes:

When Major Burns accuses Pierce and McIntyre of "swilling gin", Hawkeye is seated with a guitar in his right hand. However, when Pierce stands up, the guitar is nowhere to be seen.

Then watch the collar of Hawkeye's robe as he talks to Frank. It keeps going up and down.

Maybe it's waving! :)

II never knew this before, but it turns out the actor Timothy Brown who played Spearchucker is the same Timmy Brown who was a star running back for the Eagles in the 1960's. You learn something new every day.
