A Full Rich Day

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Three: A Full Rich Day
By D.K. Henderson on Saturday, March 11, 2000 - 2:43 pm:

Plot: Hawkeye uses a tape recorder (which thereafter vanished until Charles showed up) to record a letter home, describing what Trapper called "A well-rounded day of insanity." When a busload of wounded came in, one soldier from Luxembourg was listed as D.O.A. A Turkish soldier was brought in sandwiched between two litters, because he had not wanted to leave his buddies on the front line. A another soldier drove up with a wounded sergeant in a jeep, and forced the doctors to give him medical priority at gunpoint. Only after surgery had been completed did they find that the sergeant's driver had been wounded, too. Meanwhile, when a Luxembourg officer showed up to inquire about HIS soldier, the body could not be found, until he staggered out to his own memorial service. The Turkish soldier, having escaped from OR, hid out in the kitchen. Hawkeye gave him Radar's clothes and attempted to give him a Mickey Finn in prune juice, but Radar accidently drank it instead. The Turkish soldier courteously returned the sleeping Radar before merrily driving back to combat--in the Luxembourg officer's jeep.

Anti-nit: in the opening scene, hawk tells his dad how he got into possession of the tape recorder: A soldier stole it in the PX, and gave it to his girl. The girl/Nurse gave it to Father mulcahey, because it was stolen. The father gave it to hawk, because he didn't want to give the impression of taping confessions. Therefore, I always assumed that the father wanted the recoder to be given back to PX, and hawk only took the opportunity to record one day, before the whole proceedings of giving back sth. stolen could take place.

Actually, I believe that the soldier gave the recorder to a nurse as a "carnal bribe". The nurse gave it to Mulcahy in a fit of drunken remorse.

Hawkeye explains to his father what "triage" is. Isn't Pierce's father a doctor also? Wouldn't he know what triage is? And if not, don't you think Hawkeye would have already explained it to his dad?

Hawkeye also explains to his father who Frank Burns is. Hasn't he done that already in his previous letters home?

Yet another 47 to be found in M*A*S*H is in this ep. Frank asks Klinger where his "S-47 manifest and D-21 triplicate" are.

Okay, so the Turkish soldier has just produced a knife and cut a hole in the stretcher covering him. And neither Klinger or the orderlie helping to carry the soldier seem to be the least bit worried. The Turk doesn't seem to be the least bit sluggish, either. Were I Klinger or the orderlie, I'd be worried about the Turk using the knife on me. Especially if I were the orderlie who had the end with the knife. And how come that knife wasn't taken away from the soldier in the first place? Didn't they even make an attempt at taking it away?

I'm not sure, but I think that in Pre-Op, the close-up shots of Lt. Smith shows his rifle aimed in a different direction than in the long shots.

Why weren't the MPs notified about Lt. Smith? His actions, incidentally, would draw a court martial. I'm sure Frank was screaming for it to happen, but I suspect Hawkeye, Trapper and Henry talked him out of it.

In his office, after he recovers from being sedated, Henry tells Radar of a dream he had about being back home. Given how the season will end for Henry, the dream is sadly ironic.

The episode "O.R." indicates that General MacArthur was sent home. In this ep, Hawkeye makes a reference to sending a letter to the General that suggests that Big Mac is still in charge of the U.S. Armed Forces in Korea. Perhaps this ep happens before "O.R."?

The mud splatter (I guess that's what it is. It looks like white paint to me.) on Lt. Smith's uniform seems to change with every scene. Notably the left lapel of his shirt sometimes has a huge glop on it, and sometimes it doesn't.

Does Hawkeye always keep his medical bag in the Swamp? And if so, is it always just lying around in such a way that Radar can just grab it?

Once again, Radar is having to undress in front of other people. Again he doesn't appear to have as many layers of clothing on as he does in "Check Up".

How could Smith be so badly wounded in the chest and shoulder and the blood not show through his uniform?

Doesn't LeClerq, the missing Luxemberg soldier, seem awfully short to be serving in the military? I suppose it's possible that Luxemberg has a different physical requirements. Then again, Colonel Potter was quite short, too. So... Nevermind.

The last tag for this ep has been cut for syndication. It has Hawkeye concluded his audio letter to his Dad by allowing Trapper, Henry and Frank to say a few words to Daniel Pierce. Radar, who is still unconscious from the chloro-hydrate, snores his greeting.

The actress who normally plays Nurse Kellye is credited in this ep with playing "Nurse Able".

Ooops! Now I know it's time for me to go to bed. I just hit the wrong thing on my Username. The previous post should have my name on it. If the moderator of this board could correct that problem, I'd be most grateful.
