Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Three: Rainbow Bridge
By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, February 08, 2000 - 6:52 pm:

Plot: Henry Morgan stars as a general who's missing a few rungs, is a few bricks shy of a load, who's not playing with a full deck....

By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, February 08, 2000 - 6:55 pm:

Hold it. That plot synopsis is for the General Flipped at Dawn, which is currently missing its "Add a message."

Rainbow Bridge plot: Hawkeye and Trapper delay a trip to Tokyo to negociate the return of some wounded GI's by the Chinese.

I loved Mako's line in this episode, after Frank reluctantly pulls out the tiny gun that he was hiding.

(Snort)"What the he** is that?"

By Corey Hines on Monday, April 23, 2001 - 8:20 pm:

Given that Burns disobeyed orders not to bring a gun, which endangerd the lives of the MASH gang and those of the patients, wouldn't he have been court martialed and dishonorably discharged from the army?

By Benn on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 - 7:00 am:

I can invision Ferret Face whining and groveling in front of Hawkeye, Trapper, Radar and Klinger, begging them not to tell the Colonel. What's even more surprising, is that I can imagine Pierce and McIntyre giving up the golden opportunity to get rid of Frank, and agreeing not to tell Henry.

By Benn on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 - 7:13 am:

Hey Corey! The real question isn't "Why didn't Frank Burns get court-martialed?" It's "Why's Klinger still in the Army?" Think about it. To get that magic Section 8, Klinger needed the signatures of three doctors. Captains Pierce and McIntyre would've willingly signed. But as they've pointed out no one wanted to be the third. If Burns was begging and pleading for no one to tell on him, you gotta wonder why Klinger didn't say, "Sure, Major, it'll be our little secret. On one condition." "Anything!" "Anything..? Then sign my discharge papers!"

What kept that scenario from happening? Klinger had his ticket home! It was the one scheme that would've worked.

The only thing I can figure is that Hawkeye and Trapper worked out another deal. What I don't know. The only guess I can make is that it would involved the greater good for the 4077th, be it medically, or otherwise. But exactly what, I can't say.

By Benn on Saturday, December 01, 2001 - 5:51 am:

In the OR, the surgeons are getting patients that could have waited. Hawkeye asked Henry who's doing triage. Now let's see. In OR there's Trapper, Henry, Spalding, Pierce himself. Gee, Hawk. Who's missing? Maybe Frank? Did Hawkeye really fail to notice that Major Burns was not in the Operating Room? And that being absent, maybe Ferret Face was handling triage? I mean, who else could have been doing it? (Besides someone from the alleged other shift?)

That chinese doctor was taking an awful risk, I think. I mean, he studied in the country of the class enemy, so I guess he was under observation from the politcal commissioner already, being not entirely trusted, but still offers a deal for the US army. Did he get anything in return? Hawk mentions that the chinese do not have enough penicillin etc., so did they trade this valuable stuff for the wounded? Hawk and trapp could at least have given them some stuff to show their personal thanks at the decent behaviour of the doctor.

Margaret first agrees with burns that the chinese are not to be trusted, then does an about-turn and makes frank go to prove his courage. Its a pity that henry isn't a real commander, because 3 of the 4 doctors of the camp going to the exchange is needlessly dangerous. Hawk, Trapp and Klinger should have been enough.

By D.K. Henderson on Saturday, March 01, 2003 - 5:02 am:

The Chinese doctor instructs them to bring their bus across the bridge, then snaps an order to his men, causing Frank to grab for the gun. After that is settled (the Chinese don't even bother to take the little gun!) they call to Klinger and Radar and begin moving the men--without moving the bus.

While Hawkeye and Trapper are packing for their (canceled) trip to Tokyo, Father Mulcahy arrives with a list of requests from people. (However, no one provided money to purchase said requests.) Among other things, Klinger had requested a training bra. Father Mulcahy wanted to know just what a training bra was. Hawkeye said it was just like a regular one, with little wheels in the back. Father Mulcahy told them to "...be good, and if you can't be good, be careful." Very pragmatic.

By Peter Stoller on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 9:53 pm:

Frank takes the gun along--Margaret's gun, by the way--only after Margaret's strong persuasion for him to do so. No one tells Margaret that it was a bad idea.

By Benn on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 10:06 pm:

Well, who all knows about it? Just Frank that I know of. And Burns did protest it - weakly admittedly. We don't know if Hawkeye and Trapper ever learned that it was Margaret's idea or if they chewed her out for putting Frank up to it.

You must've missed it, D.K. Shortly after announcing he had a list from "some of the gang", Mulcahy says, "And the filthy lucre to pay for it." He then pulls out a wad of bills.

As Margaret and Frank near the bus, Hawkeye quips, "Hypocrites at three o'clock." It's almost as if he knows that Frank has decided to volunteer. But how does he know this? Has Burns said anything to Pierce prior to this?

Abyssinia!

By D.K. Henderson on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 4:20 am:

Thanks, Benn. I'll listen for it the next time I watch it.

By Scott McClenny on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 - 3:22 pm:

Apparently Hawkeye and Trapper's furlough was only postponed and not canceled as at the end Radar is seen packing their bags for them after they have fallen asleep.

It's mentioned that both the Chinese doctor and Henry went to Illinois. So what's the chance that there would be two Illini alum in the same sector of the Korean War on opposite sides?
