The problem with nitpicking M*A*S*H

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: The Officers' Club (AKA The Kitchen Sink): The problem with nitpicking M*A*S*H
By Amos on Sunday, January 30, 2000 - 8:07 pm:

The thing that makes nitpicking M*A*S*H so difficult is that like the X-Files the titles aren't shown on air. It makes it difficult to identify the episode your watching.

I've located an old M*A*S*H book that has synopses of the first eight seasons, and I've ordered a book from the library that will have the others. I've started putting them in, but it will probably take me a while.

The Complete Book of MASH by Suzy Kalter has a pretty decent synopsis of each episode for all 11 seasons.

Decent synopsis my foot!

By Scott McClenny on Thursday, June 28, 2001 - 5:13 pm:

There are a lot of shows that don't put the
title of the episodes in the opening credits,
same other examples:

Laverne & Shirley

Happy Days

I Love Lucy

Three's Company

Who's The Boss?

I know all the examples are sitcoms but they're
the ones that were easiest to think of.I don't
know why they seem to do it more on sitcoms(leaving off the episode title)than any other
type of show.

SeaQuest DSV didn't have the titles on screen and I don't think Dark Angel does either. Boston Public just numbers theirs i.e. "Chapter Two".

By Eddie Marshall on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 - 1:20 pm:

Hi all,

I have a list linking the end of episode code numbers, e.g.

S-608 "nurse doctor"
S-609 "life time"
S-612 "Dreams"
S-613 "Dear Uncle Abdul"

If anyone's interested and can tell me where I could post it I'll see what I can do

Cheers
All

Ed

The best I can recommend Ed, is to post them with their appropriate episodes. But I realize that might be a bit time consuming.

Nobody nitpicked M*A*S*H more than Richard Hooker (the pen name for Dr. H. Richard Hornberger Jr.), who served in Korea. Here's the reasons why he never liked the TV series.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Saturday, May 06, 2023 - 6:08 pm:

From the article:
As someone who knew first-hand what it was like being a surgeon doctor during the Korean War, he thought that the creatives didn't earn the right to express their sentiments about it.

Of two minds here.

I see where he's coming from, but people do have the right to express opinions on anything they wish. His opinions are not more priviledged, but they are more informed. I've had to sit through people giving their outsider opinion on matters where I'm an insider, as have we all at some time or another, so I totally get the eye-rolling.

As for the money, he could have said no.

The fact is that, without M*A*S*H*, many would probably have never even heard of the Korean War to begin with. I read about one Canadian soldier, who, after coming home from fighting in Korea, was asked by friends where he had been for the last year or so. These people had no clue that a war was happening (of course, this was long before the Internet and 24-hours-a-day news).
