Promotion Commotion

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Ten: Promotion Commotion
By D.K. Henderson on Saturday, February 12, 2000 - 9:31 am:

Plot: Hawkeye, B.J, and Charles are sitting on the promotions board. All the enlisted men up for promos are being disgustingly nice, except for Elmo Hitalski, who promised to beat the stuffing out of Charles if he didn't get promoted. When the promotions list comes through, Hitalski is not on it, but new Sergeant Klinger makes arrangements to get Hitalski out of Charles--and everyone else's--way.

Plot B: A young soldier is harrassed by others from his unit, because he had mentioned that he was still a virgin and intent on remaining faithful to his girl. Potter doubles as a father-substitute.

When asked if he had any children, Potter completely forgot about his son, the dentist.

Given the number of times Klinger has gone AWOL, faked craziness, etc., I find it hard to believe he'd get a promotion. Hitalski was ruled out for having too many black marks on his record. Wouldn't Klinger have had similar difficulties?

I don't think so. Klinger would probably have gotten a dishonorable discharge with all the stunts he's pulled if they'd made it into the official record. So Blake and Potter probably just shrugged most of it off. That, plus the fact that all three guys on the review board like him (whatever Charles may say) and the fact that he DOES do his job means that a promotion isn't nearly so far-fetched.

One thing I should mention about Klinger's record is that Henry, at any rate, had a file that contained all of the alleged letters from home Max got. The ones saying half the family dying, the other half pregnant. Remember? When Potter arrived, he read the files on Pierce and Hunnicutt and much of the shenanigans they engaged in was recorded. I believe Pierce's reputation as a malcontent was brought up in his court-martial trial in "The Novacaine Mutiny". Yet Pierce and Hunnicutt do their jobs, too. Moreover, Klinger had recently been the subject of a court-martial himself. And much of his not so sterling actions were brought to light in that trial. So just how likely is Max's promotion, really?

When Charles throws the folders on B.J., they start to slide. Hunnicutt halts them with his left hand. But in the next shot, Beej is using his right hand to hold the files in place.

NNAN:Igor's not a cook, right? So how'd he get the strawberry shortcake made? Did he somehow get Pernelli's help? And is Pernelli also up for a promotion?

For that matter, where'd Igor get the strawberries? As rare as something as simple as eggs seem to be, I'd imagine strawberries are much more rare.

Did they move the beds in Post-Op? I've always been under the impression the beds were all up against the wall. Yet there's one shot during the conversation between Colonel Potter and Jimmy Danielson where there is clearly space between the head of the beds and the wall of Post-Op.

Why doesn't Charles report Hitalski? The man threatened a superior officer. And with his background, all Charles would have to do is inform Potter of Hitalski's threat. Hitalski would most likely find himself in the stockade rather quickly. Even better, why doesn't Winchester show off his "martial arts" technique he learned in last season's ep, "Oh, How We Danced"? It worked then.

This is the second episode this season that mentions Potter's interest in fishing - something that's never been mention before.
