Stars and Stripe

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Eight: Stars and Stripe

Actually, it's STARS AND STRIPE.

Plot A: An argument ensues after B.J. and Charles are asked to write a report for a medical journal about a special operation they performed.
Plot B: Scully shows up again to see Margaret, minus his sergeant's stripes. The reunion does not go as either of them expect.

Hawkeye makes a very profound statement at the end of this episode. "We're both looking for a custom fit in an off-the-rack world."

I just realized the meaning of the title...boy, am I thick sometimes! Stars because that's what BJ and Charles were (In a way) and Stripe because Jack Scully showed up as a privite and Margaret made a big fuss that he only had one stripe when he was officer material...honestly, I can't believe how sexist Scully could be! At first, I liked him, but now, I don't think to highly of him...what do y'all think?

You know I agree, girl. I think he was a real chia pet.

This episode, for me, provides proof that something happened between Hawkeye and Margaret. She describes what her ideal man would be like. First off, a percentage is her father. She then rattles off percentages for Frank, Donald, Scully and Hawkeye. The first two she almost definitely had sex with. Scully she most likely did. Other than her father, that would make Hawkeye the only one on her list she did not have carnal relationship with. Interestingly, she does not cite Colonel Potter as having qualities the one true love of her life should have.

Oh yeah, notice Scully's sleeves in this episode. You can see where his stripes had been. Nice touch.

Actually, I don't think Margaret ever had sex with Scully. The first time they met was during that all-nighter at Rosie's, where Margaret hastily shooed Scully back to his unit during the brawl. The second time was when he was brought in wounded. At the end of the episode, Hawkeye made a crack about how she hadn't gotten any action with him, much as she wanted to. The third time was this episode. Unless, of course, she met him in other times and places that were not referred to.

Thanks alot D.K., a perfectly good theory torn to shreds. Hope you're happy.

Hawkeye offers to help Charles and B.J. write their paper. When Charles declines the offer, the position of his head does not quite match in the two shots.

Whoever runs the camp barbershop apparently isn't very good at their job. No one ever seems to use his services. Even in this ep, if you look in the background when Scully arrives, you can see Kellye giving someone a haircut.

Once again, Winchester, the man from the family that never sweats, can be seen with a sweat stain on his underarm. You can see it in the Mess Tent scene, just after Margaret leaves with Scully. It occurs around the time Pierce says, "What's this? Trouble in Paradise?"

While in Margaret's tent, Scully says something about a guy "likes to see his gal get all dolled up." Wouldn't it be a bit impertinent of Scully to be calling Major Houlihan "his gal" if they'd only seen other twice previously? I mean, unless there really was some magic and chemistry between the two in the first two meetings. This suggests to me that Margaret and Jack may have seen each other a few more times than this. We just never seen those times.

If I'm not mistaken, the scene where we see the end of the Scrabble game between Hawkeye and Igor is cut for syndication.

The bar in the Officers Club is back in its original position this episode. In the last ep, it was on the opposite wall it can normally be found.

It's obvious Max still has the Klinger Collection of dresses, despite the fact that he's given up wearing them for a Section Eight. The question is, where has he been keeping the dresses? And why is he keeping them? You'd think that if Klinger is no longer in the Crazy Business and not wearing dresses any longer, that he'd sell the outfits or give them away. Yet, he apparently has kept them.

The piano in the Officers Club has also been moved. It now sits across from the bar, rather to the left of the bar.

"I'm so conservative, I make you look like a New Dealer."
