Captains Outrageous

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Eight: Captains Outrageous
By D.K. Henderson on Friday, February 11, 2000 - 4:21 pm:

Plot A: A brawl at Rosie's puts Rosie in the hospital, and the doctors agree to fill in for her.
Plot B: Father Mulcahy is worried that his long-overdue promotion will be denied again.

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, July 14, 2000 - 6:01 am:

Ugly John, having taken a leave of absence, changes his name to Muldoon and becomes an M.P.

Why on Earth didn't they pass Rosie's warning about Muldoon to everyone working the bar? (I know, I know, it would have spoiled the plot.)

This apparently was an early episode with Rizzo, when he was just cast as "The GI." According to this episode, Rizzo was not married--which he is, later, along with a child. Unless, of course, he was whining about some "college boy" stealing his mistress, as opposed to his wife.

I don't get where Muldoon had a right to close down Rosie's.

I don't see why Rosie is so upset with the Officers' handling of her bar. They're obviously her best, if not primary, customers. Surely she could cut them some slack given how much she values their business. After all, wherever the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital 4077th goes, no matter where the battle's front line takes the MASH unit, Rosie packed up her bar and followed them. She had to have! The bar was always nearby. (The same holds true for Sister Teresa's orphanage.)

After Hawkeye, Charles and B.J. toast the "Mother of Inebriation", Charles sets his glass down. However, it looks like in the next shot, that the glass is just above the table instead of on top of the table.

Look carefully at Nurse Kellye in the background as Charles pays Rosie for the next round of drinks. Kellye has something rarely seen in the series. A cigarette. We often see staff smoking cigars, but rarely cigarettes.

While Hawkeye is acting as bartender at Rosie's, we see Nurse Kellye flirting with him. Wonder if this is one of the earlier signs that she has a crush on the Captain. (See "Look Me Over" for more details.)

Wasn't the scene where Rosie complains about the food at the 4077th cut for syndication? It doesn't seem too familiar to me.

Why didn't someone put the Greek or the Turk in the VIP tent? Or for that matter, put one of them under arrest? It would certainly help cut back on the fighting those two did.

When Rosie described Muldoon earlier in the ep, Pierce and Hunnicutt seemed to know who she was talking about. Yet, when he walks into Rosie's, neither Captains seem to recognize him. They certainly don't bother to alert Charles to his presence and what Winchester should do for Muldoon.

Isn't Father Mulcahy's full name John Francis Mulcahy? In this ep, Colonel Potter identifies him as "Francis John Mulcahy". (And really, I think there's a "Patrick" in the Father's name, too.)

This episode marks the second time this season that General Imbrie is mentioned.

His full name was John Patrick Francis Mulcahy according to the essential M*A*S*H character list.

By Benn on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 - 10:44 pm:

Right, R. But it changed from time to time. I think in "Nurse Doctor", the Padre said it was "John Francis Mulcahy". The "Patrick", IIRC, came from the pilot ep.

It's just that in this ep, Colonel Potter specifically calls the Father "Francis John Mulcahy". I know he's talking to the Pentagon at the time. But surely middle-name first is not the standard way for the military to identify its personnel. We've never heard it done that way before in the series.

True the list i had gave that name. And IRC there where other times it was used or some variation on it.

And the military has many different protocols on how a person is addressed and referred to depending on the situation, who is addressing whom and what the reason the person is being reffered to for.
