What? No board for AfterM*A*S*H yet??

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: The Officers' Club (AKA The Kitchen Sink): What? No board for AfterM*A*S*H yet??

I'm just wondering why not, as there is a section for that other really bad spin-off, "Joey", on the "Friends" board.

This show has always shown up on every "Worst TV Shows Of All Time" or "Worst Spin-Off" list that has ever been compiled. And for good reason! The majority of the lead actors from the original nine-season show refused to do it, and the only remaining members of the cast that were available were like the "B-Team" of supporting characters: Col. Potter, Father Mulcahy, and that little cross-dressing troll Cpl. Klinger. And instead of being a medical treatment unit stationed in Korea during the war, the show took place in some veteran's hospital in the Midwest.

Basically, this show personified banality and mediocrity to the hilt. Everything that M*A*S*H had that made it dramatic and compelling, everything that made it entertaining to watch, all that, AfterM*A*S*H completely lacked, and more. It debuted in September 1983 and was cancelled in December 1984.

I never saw it, and I hope I never do. And TV Guide listed it as the 7th Worst Show Of All Time. That's good enough for me!

If you've never seen it, never will, and profess to hate it, then why do you want a board for it?

By Andre Reichenbacher (Amr) on Saturday, February 11, 2012 - 12:48 pm:

Well, others may have seen it, and maybe they wanted to give their opinion on it. Just sayin'.

Then if they did, they could ask for it.

I've seen it. I don't remember a lot about it (it has been almost 30 years since it was on). Father Mulcahy's hearing, which he lost in the last M*A*S*H episode, was restored in the first episode of After MASH. And, Klinger was put on trial, and Edward Winter's Flagg was brought in to testify. The actress who played Potter's wife changed midstream, neither of whom was the subject of the picture that Potter kept on his desk at the 4077th. (That photo was of Harry Morgan's real-life wife, btw.)

I'm not defending AfterMASH, but I can't agree it was among the worse shows ever. That category would be reserved for shows that aired, were instantly cancelled, and no one remembers now. AfterMASH, while indeed bad, is just remembered because MASH was as well-known as it was and therefore an easier target than the even worse shows. It's well-known as a bad show because of its association with a well-known show; there are many shows just as bad or even worse that don't even have that.

Speaking of even worse shows, Radar made a guest appearance once as well. It was setting up the pilot W*A*L*T*E*R.

The Wikipedia write-up of W*A*L*T*E*R:

The episode opens with Walter O'Reilly in his cousin Wendell Micklejohn's apartment. They are getting ready for their workday while watching the start of a television interview. The interview shows journalist Clete Roberts following up on the members of the M*A*S*H 4077th. The previous week Roberts had interviewed Hawkeye Pierce, and this week he is catching up with O'Reilly. At the police department and through store windows on the street, O'Reilly and Micklejohn catch pieces of the television interview, giving viewers of the pilot a chance to sample the potential series and to build a bridge between the events of M*A*S*H and W*A*L*T*E*R.

Viewers learn that O'Reilly returned to Iowa, where he failed at farming. He sold the farm and the livestock and sent his mother off to live with his aunt. His bride left him for another man after their honeymoon. O'Reilly decided to commit suicide, and went to a drug store to buy sleeping pills for an overdose (as well as aspirin, because sleeping pills give him headaches). The drugstore clerk, Victoria, cheered him up and they became good friends. His cousin Wendell helped him get a job on the police force. Walter solves a dispute between two strippers, and gets his wallet back from a young would-be thief whose father had died in Korea.

It's been about 30 years since AfterM*A*S*H was on TV. Far as I know, it hasn't been in syndication. It has definitely not been releaased on DVD. I remember kinda liking it. But it's been nigh onto 30 years. I only remember bits and pieces of it. Other than saying I wish it was on DVD, which I have over in the appropriate topic in the Kitchen Sink, I really have nothing to say about it.

A show about the M*A*S*H characters after they returned home to their normal lives sounds to me about as compelling as a series about Richard Kimble after he cleared his name and ended his life as a fugitive and returned home to resume his life as a normal doctor.
