The Longjohn Flap

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season One: The Longjohn Flap

Plot: Hawkeye's longjohns travel all over the camp. Henry gets appendicitis.

By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, March 07, 2000 - 5:25 am:

In Season Three's "Private Charles Lamb" Radar gets all bent out of shape at the thought of the lamb being butchered for the Easter feast. In this episode, he values a leg of lamb (with mint jelly) over the possibility of spending time with a nurse. I guess he doesn't mind lamb if it's already been prepared.

I have a hard time believing that the same pair of longjohns could fit both Henry and Radar.

Why doesn't Margaret put them on as soon as she gets them? She just hangs them up and admires them for some reason, making them easy for Klinger to steal, but not making much sense.

By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, March 30, 2000 - 5:42 am:

I got the impression that she had either washed them and was drying them, or that she was warming them up before putting them on.

What sort of woman wants to know what her cash value is?

If Klinger is an atheist, why does he ask Father Mulcahy if stealing the longjohns is a sin?

Notice that only the male officers wear the longjohns - Hawkeye, Trapper, Frank, Henry and Father Mulcahy. Mulcahy is the only who is not seen wearing them. (He mentions wearing them before giving them to Blake.)

Also, note that when Hawk and Trapper see Henry in the underwear, Captain McIntyre refers to them as "ours", as in his and Hawkeye's.

Why does the whole camp cheer at the news that longjohns survived the operation? Do they actually think Hawkeye's going to let everyone have a shot at wearing them? At the end of the show, he is clearly refusing to allow his best friend, Trapper, have them back. Why would he allow anyone else in camp to get a hold of them?

Moreover, you gotta wonder, just what happened to the longjohns? Hawkeye is shown suffering from the cold in several later episodes. Surely if he still had the underwear, you would think he would've worn them. Apparently he got rid of them. But why?

Cut for syndication - Hawkeye leaving the Mess Tent, dancing and singing.

NANJAO - I couldn't help notice that Trapper breaks a stool and shoves the pieces into the Swamp's stove. He also deals some playing cards into it, too.

Hawkeye gave up those long johns much too easily if you ask me.

In the poker game where Trapper loses the long johns, the players are Radar, Trapper, Hawkeye and an unnamed patient. That patient must have shipped out quick. It doesn't seem like he told anyone about the underwear.

There's a scene involving the chow line that's been cut. Hawkeye tries to use a nurse to keep warm. He invites her to sit with him. She turns him down, saying she's going to be sitting with someone else. That someone else is Radar.

About that leg of lamb, just for whom was it prepared? Henry? A visiting General? Whoever it was must have got a bit p.o.'ed that the lamb was no longer there. Incidentally, in this episode, it's the cook who serves the food. The jobs have not yet been separated.

"What sort of woman wants to know what her cash value is?" - D.K. Henderson

Actually, Margaret doesn't ask her monetary value to Frank. She wants to know what - or more importantly who - Major Burns is willing to give up for her.

Klinger complains about the thin outfit he's wearing while on guard duty. Well. Why is he wearing such a thin outfit? Is he crazy? (Don't answer that. )

Interestingly enough after his conversation with Klinger, Major Burns doesn't go the Swamp. The Swamp is directly behind Klinger. It looks like Frank is heading to Post-Op.

How does Klinger know about the long johns? The patient in Post-Op?

"Why doesn't Margaret put them on as soon as she gets them? She just hangs them up and admires them for some reason, making them easy for Klinger to steal, but not making much sense." - Khaja

"I got the impression that she had either washed them and was drying them, or that she was warming them up before putting them on." - D.K. Henderson

My impression is that she was going to wait 'til she went to bed to put them on.

There's another scene cut after Klinger steals the long johns. Margaret rushes out of her tent, screaming bloody murder. Hawkeye hears her and goes to find out what's happened. Hot Lips initially accuses Pierce of stealing the underwear. Hawkeye then goes into a rant about how he's lost the underwear.

By the end of the ep, Hawkeye knows that the long johns have been in the possession of Trapper, Radar, Frank, Margaret and Henry. He is unaware that the cook, Klinger and Father Mulcahy also had them. Just an observation.

Henry has the lights in his office in a very strange place. Instead of being overhead, the lights are located at about ground level. You can tell in the scene where Trapper and Hawkeye confront Henry about the underwear. On the wall behind them, you can see their shadows are well above their heads, almost to the ceiling.

Another scene cut - This is very minor, but after the announcement that the long johns were saved, there's a shot in the OR showing Hawkeye & Trapper smiling. Pierce says, "We're a hit."

Actually, being a 1950's farm kid and all, you'd think he'd have no trouble with meat in whatever form it was presented to him (cf Patrick McManus' hilarious story of how his grandma forced him to behead the family's chickens for dinner).
Guess Mom O'Reilly was a bit too overprotective on the facts of life front...

Moreover, you gotta wonder, just what happened to the longjohns? Hawkeye is shown suffering from the cold in several later episodes. Surely if he still had the underwear, you would think he would've worn them. Apparently he got rid of them. But why?

Some suggestions: They were stolen (maybe by one of the cheering folks at the end, after it became clear Hawkeye was gonna hoard them?); they were bartered away for another luxury in summer when people tend to forget the cold; Trapper 'borrowed' them, a la Hawkeye's watch, for collateral in a poker game; they were given to a nurse in exchange for, erm, favours; they were used on a patient who needed to be kept warm.

I'll go along with your explanations, Kerrie. I do wonder why Hawk didn't have his dad send another pair, though.

For that matter why doesn't each person in the camp have a loved one send them a pair.
