Major Fred C. Dobbs

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season One: Major Fred C. Dobbs

Plot: Tormented unmercifully by Hawkeye and Trapper, Frank Burns gives up and applies for a transfer. Hot Lips soon follows suit. Realizing that this will make more work for them, Hawkeye and Trapper infect Frank with gold fever to make him stay.

This episode certainly makes Hawkeye and Trapper look like first class jerks. It doesn't even bother to give any reasons for why they're torturing Frank, so they seem to be doing it just for the sheer thrill of it. And even considering how annoying Frank can be, the two of them are still WAY over the top. I'd demand a transfer too.

Frank has a 30ft yacht? Where exactly does he sail it in Indiana?

Trapper's comment about Radar having the IQ of a houseplant is similar to what Charles says about Klinger in a later episode. (I believe it's "Period of Adjustment")

There are plenty of rivers to sail on in Indiana. The Ohio and Walbash come to mind in addition to Lake Michigan. He is from Fort Wayne (Just like my uncle) Three rivers meet in the town the St. Mary R., St. Joseph R. and the Maumee R.

Call me naive, but just what is the reference to Fred C. Dobbs? Is he any relation to J. Fred Muggs?

By Lilith on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 - 12:19 am:

Fred C. Dobbs was a gold prospector in the old Humphrey Bogart movie Casablanca. I think...

Thank you.

I agree that Hawk and Trapper are acting out of character with their teasing of Frank. I think that the author of theis episode had the movie versions of the characters in mind when he.she wrote this.

By Benn Allen on Sunday, April 30, 2000 - 4:17 am:

The Bogart movie is "The Treasure of Sierra Madre". This is the movie with the classic "Bodgees? We don' got no steenking bodges. We don' need no steenkin' bodges." Also it's the one where Bogie says, "Pardon me, but can you help a fellow American who's down on his luck?" This was a running gag in a Bugs Bunny and the little "pen-goo-win" cartoon.

By Lilith on Monday, May 01, 2000 - 12:49 am:

I apologize, I mixed up the movies.

Unless I'm mistaken, the dentist who's working on Henry is this episode is the very same dentist shown leaving the 4077th two episodes later in the ep, "Showtime".

By Benn (Benn) on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 - 5:52 pm:

The opening theme is the same arrangement as the one used in "The Army-Navy Game" and "The Sticky Wicket".

Hawkeye and Frank are operating on the same patient. Hawkeye tells Burns he missed a fragment. Frank blamed this oversight on Ginger not providing him with suction. Burns was very rude and hostile to Nurse Bayliss. This may have been what motivated Pierce and McIntyre to put the cast on Frank's arm. I'd like to point out, that if Hawkeye saw the fragment, without the aid of suction, Major Burns probably should have seen it, too.

There's a tiny bit of dialogue cut after the OR. It's just some banter between Pierce and McIntyre as they remove their scrubs.

Frank must be a very sound sleeper for Hawkeye and Trapper to get that cast on him.

This is the episode where Frank walks in on Margaret applying hydrogen peroxide on her hair and asks, "Did you cut your head again?" This refers to the scene in "Cheif Surgeon Who?" where Frank first barges in on Margaret dying her hair. She tells Frank she's treating a cut on her head.

The P.A. gag in this ep is a variation of the one done in the movie. The movie version was better.

After Frank hears some of the "radio program" "Just Plain MacArthur" (really a recording of Frank's & Margaret's farewell scene), Frank agrily chases Hawkeye around the Swamp. The chase has been cut for syndication. Wonder what happened to that tape anyway? It's funny hearing Frank dismiss his own words as "dribble and manure".

Is there a Detroit, Maine? Hawkeye suggests to Henry they go see his dentist in Detroit. If the dentist is in Michigan, Pierce travels a long way to have his teeth worked on.

The scene where Frank and Margaret go to the creek so Burns can look for gold is meant to be a night scene. However, it was clealy filmed during the day. A darkened filter was put over the camera lens to simulate nightfall. It doesn't help.

And isn't it awfully late for Frank to be checking the creek for gold. And why drag Magaret out of bed to go along? You'd think Frank would want to keep the gold more of secret. The fewer people who know, the more gold for the Major.

What good would a gold strike do in keeping Frank at the 4077th anyway? Eventually the camp would move from away from the spot. Frank could always transfer out later.

I think there's a scene cut where Frank sneaks into Radar's office to steal the Corporal's pick and flashlight.

Um, would a MASH unit normally carry gold paint with them? If so, what would they need it for? Gold is a very poor color choice for camouflage. If the paint is not a regular part of the 4077's inventory, how did Hawkeye and Trapper get it so quickly?
