Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season One: Ceasefire

Plot: A premature cease-fire has everyone celebrating except Trapper.

This is another episode where it seems like the idea of Ho-Jon going to medical school in the United States has been completely forgotten. Ho-Jon says that he wants something to remember them by, but he doesn't need to remember Hawkeye--he's supposed to go and live with Hawkeye's father.

(Also, in Hawkeye's letters home, you notice that he never asks how Ho-Jon is doing.)

How did they get all their stuff back after the South Koreans took it? It looks like even personal items.

I saw the uncut version of this one for the first time today. One of the missing scenes involves Margaret threatening to stick her head in an oven if Frank doesn't take her home with him. (She's plastered at the time.)

Another victim of syndication is the first nurse who Hawkeye gives the brush-off to. In addition to being married, he also tells her he has 5 kids.

Hmmm. I never realized Margaret was that literary. I think the reference to sticking her head in an oven is supposed to be reminiscent of a poet named Sylvia Plath, who committed suicide by sticking her head in an oven.

Is Frank drunk at the farewell ceremony? He sure looks that way. Up to this point, the Major had been portrayed as a teetotaler, drinking nothing stronger than a Shirley Temple.

Either the war got to him, or this was his way of trying to make piece with his friends guys he shared a tent with.

Except, I assume he had been with Hot Lips the whole time leading up to the farewell ceremony. That's certainly the impression the episode gives.

By Benn (Benn) on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 - 9:42 pm:

The opening theme is once more the classic version; the one with the guitar in it.

Once again, Klinger is wearing falsies.

Normally, the door to Margaret's tent has a sign on it that says "Maj. Houlihan Knock Before Entering". That sign is not on the door in this ep. I wonder if the Koreans took.

Once more, Hawkeye calls Vermont home. Of course, Crabapple Cove, Maine is Hawk's home. However, even the episodes where Maine is identified as home, Crabapple Cove is not mentioned.

When Radar is in Henry's tent, reading the inscription in his scrapbook, there's a medium close-up shot of Radar. In the background is a picture to the right of the screen. The camera cuts to a shot of Henry. Then it goes back to Radar. O'Reilly has moved. The picture is further to the right.

"Is Frank drunk at the farewell ceremony? He sure looks that way. Up to this point, the Major had been portrayed as a teetotaler, drinking nothing stronger than a Shirley Temple." - me

"Either the war got to him, or this was his way of trying to make piece with his friends guys he shared a tent with." - Charles Cabe

Rewatching the episode, it turns out that Frank has spent the day having a few farewell toasts with Margaret.

For the record, the brand of beer that was consumed throughout this season is "Star" beer. You can distinctly see the label at the farewell party.

You know, considering how passionately Hot Lips proclaimed her love for Frank in this ep, those slides of General Clayton and Margaret must be doubly embarrassing for her.

This is the second time in the series that the song "Auld Lang Syne" is sung. The first time was when Hot Lips sang it to Frank in the "Army-Navy Game".

How drunk did everyone get at the farewell party? The party ends with the announcement that there was no cease-fire, and the arrival of wounded. One hopes that not many of the others present were as drunk as Burns and Houlihan.
