5 O'Clock Charlie

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Two: 5 O'Clock Charlie

Plot: Watching an inept North Korean pilot try to blow up a nearby ammo dump becomes a spectator sport. Frank schemes for a gun to blow him out of the sky.

You gotta wonder about the state of the North Korean air division. It was, what, five or six straight weeks of failure? Didn't they have ANY other pilots available?

By margie on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 - 11:25 am:

I always thought Charlie was acting on his own, not under orders from the North Korean military. It's been a while, so I may be wrong!

By Benn on Monday, November 13, 2000 - 3:22 pm:

Here's something that's always kinda bugged me: Henry's on the phone to the general (Hammond?) Per Frank's request, he's requesting an anti-aircraft gun. Henry has the supply book upside down, so he reads the word "gun" as "nug". If the word "gun" appears in the lower-case, Henry should be reading it as "un6". If it was in capitals, it look something like "N Omega Backwards G". I dunno. Maybe he was an undiagnosed dyslexic.

By kerriem. on Monday, November 13, 2000 - 6:10 pm:

D.K.: According to all the 'official' material, Charlie's a lone nutcase. That's why they can fool him so easily into attacking - he actually thinks one hit on the 4077th and he destroys the US forces!

Father Mulcahy placing his bet with Radar has been edited out.

In OR Henry is working with an unidentified fifth doctor.

This episode apparently takes place before “Divided We Stand”. Henry tells Frank he had just gotten the Doll on his desk during the previous week.

Henry won the pool at 75½ yards. A Corporal Johnson was next with 22¾. Really? Hawkeye had 62 yards. Ginger Bayliss had 33 yards. Trapper had 47 yards. General Clayton had 52 yards. Doesn’t sound to me like Johnson really was the runner up.

Later, Clayton is said to want 64 yards. Radar responds that Trapper and Hawkeye have 64 yards. However, Pierce and McIntyre have apparently been using the same numbers every day – Trapper 47; Hawkeye 62. So why can’t the General have 64?

Much of Henry’s and Frank discussion about needing a gun has been edited out.

The second time Five O’Clock flies out to the 4077th to drop a bomb, it looks like Nurse Kellye is standing next to Margaret. This could be her first appearance. It could, however, be Klein.

I love how Frank babbles on to his “platoon” before even bothering to find out if any of them speak English. Then, upon learning that the one South Korean does speak English, Burns promptly says, “Der gut.”

A shower scene is cut. Hawkeye and Trapper decide they need to keep Frank from firing the gun. In case he gets lucky and actually hits Charlie. They sip a martini through an I.V. bottle.

The tag to this ep has been cut. Hawkeye and Trapper invite Frank to join them in the Mess Tent for a meal.

By Merat on Sunday, July 28, 2002 - 7:45 pm:

When you say that a scene has been cut, do you mean that it was cut from the current broadcast episodes or from the DVD?

Did Frank say "der gut" or "sehr gut"? The first means "the good" and the second "very good" (I think). Having said this, I wouldn't be surprised if Frank DID say der gut.

By D.K. Henderson on Monday, July 29, 2002 - 4:36 am:

I think that Frank said "sehr gut." I can remember hearing an "s". This was Frank's response to the soldier saying that he not only spoke English, but several other languages, including "a little German."

By Benn on Monday, July 29, 2002 - 9:32 pm:

I mean the scene has been from syndication, Merat.

As for what Frank says, close captioning says, "Der gut." Given what you said, Merat, Burns' response - "The good - doesn't make sense. And you're right, D.K. I forgot that the Korean said he spoke "a little German".

By kerriem on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 9:56 pm:

I've just been watching the ep on DVD, and according to the subtitles there Frank does indeed say 'Sehr gut' - meaning, as Merat says, 'very good'. Score another one for the creators, who worked any number of these obscure little details into the series.

Wonderful ep, well-deserving of it's classic status. The PA dude especially outdoes himself: "Direct from North Korea, for the sixth straight week, Five O'Clock Charlie...his airplane...and his astigmatism!"

(Also, gotta love the bit with Trapper as MacArthur and Hawkeye and Radar as his platoon..."Are you 'one'?" "Yes, are you?")

Or...maybe he was just confused enough to recognise the letters that should be there but not read them properly?

By Joel Croteau (Jcroteau) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 1:52 am:

I noticed at the beginning of the episode that there's a scene where a woman in a towel ran out of the showers and was followed by a man in skivvies.

By Benn on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 - 11:46 pm:

That sounds more like a joke than a nit. Of course, that may be why you're pointing it out.

Abyssinia!

By Joel Croteau (Jcroteau) on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 1:33 am:

Yes, I knew it was a joke. I just thought I'd point it out for anyone who missed it.

By Benn on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 1:44 am:

K. I wasn't sure if you were pointing it out as a nit or not. Kinda thought you were talking about it being a joke, but you never know.

Abyssinia!

Hey, Im watching 5 0 clock charlie now, on Hallmark.

By Mash Fan on Thursday, September 07, 2006 - 12:58 am:

When Radar left Mash, who did the PA voice over?

By Benn on Thursday, September 07, 2006 - 1:47 am:

Radar did not do all of the PA voice-overs. That was three other people who did. Sal Viscuso and Todd Sussman were the two who did most of the PA voice-overs. Clearly, there were times when Corporal O'Riley (and later Klinger) was the one to make the announcements. But for the most part, the calls announcing more wounded were made by the two gentlemen I just mentioned. For more info on the Public Announcements, go here.

And welcome, Mash Fan! Glad you're here.

"Abyssinia!"

By Benn ! on Thursday, September 07, 2006 - 9:13 am:

The target set up for Charlie looks almost exactly like the current Target department store logo. Right down to its red color.
