L.I.P. (Local Indigenous Personnel)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Two: L.I.P. (Local Indigenous Personnel)
By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, February 08, 2000 - 6:13 pm:

Plot A: A soldier with a Korean mistress and son asks Hawkeye for help in expediting a marriage, delaying Hawkeye's date with a nurse.
Plot B: A "clean-cut American boy" wants to marry a local call girl so that she can go to the states and he can pocket $1000.

Sorry, people, my mistake. Plot B belongs in the third season episode, "Love and Marriage".

I liked the scene with the bigoted nurse, when Hawkeye tried to take back his handshake. I also like his sticking out his tongue at her.

Considering all the complaints about the mess tent, how did Klinger manage to put together such a nice picnic basket?

That is definitely Kellye making goo goo eyes at Radar in the Mess Tent while they’re watching a movie. If “Five O’Clock Charlie” was not her first appearance in the series, this is. Having Kellye watch Radar leave the tent after the movie shows good attention to details on the part of the director, William Ward. Radar is completely oblivious to Nurse Kellye, of course. Also, I think you can see Igor leaving the tent.

This is the second time this season a big deal is made about Frank being the ranking surgeon at the 4077th (After Henry, of course). Apparently the writers have forgotten that Hawkeye is chief surgeon for the unit. Thus he should be the one making the medical decisions.

Hawkeye’s second with Regina is edited out for syndication. The two have an outdoor dinner and avoid watching the movies.

Despite the fact that the 4077th has a camp barber (I’ve seen the tent), in this ep we see Trapper giving Hawkeye a haircut in the Swamp.

I’m a bit fuzzy on this. Could someone explain how revealing that Private Walker and Kim, his fiancée, have a baby fouled up his marriage application? I don’t get it.

Interestingly Lt. Hoffman (Regina) has her own tent. Again, I somehow don’t think the 4077th has enough tents that very many people could live on their own in camp.

The episode begins in the Mess Tent. It also ends in the Mess Tent with the wedding of Private Walker and Kim. Klinger catches the bouquet. Intriguingly, he really is the next character to get married in the series. Margaret would be the next one.

I thought Klinger was already married.

Klinger gets married over the radio in the season Three episode "Springtime."

By kerriem, who wont forget this scene in a hurry... on Sunday, August 04, 2002 - 4:33 pm:

Yup...In a long, white satin wedding dress. Carrying a bouquet. To a lady named Laverne.

By Benn on Monday, August 05, 2002 - 4:17 pm:

Laverne Esposito.

By Squggly on Monday, August 05, 2002 - 9:36 pm:

Of Laverne and SHirley fame?

By ScottN on Monday, August 05, 2002 - 11:54 pm:

Nope, that's Laverne Difazio.

By Squiggy on Tuesday, August 06, 2002 - 12:15 am:

ooops sorry got the two confuzed.

DK asked about the picnic basket several years ago. Perhaps Klinger got it from the appearant part time chef that made the pork chops for Henry in Cowboy. (That is the only time we see him).

The Army is already assuming that Kim's trying to trap Walker into taking her to the States. To this line of thinking, the baby is Exhibit A.

Interestingly Lt. Hoffman (Regina) has her own tent. Again, I somehow don’t think the 4077th has enough tents that very many people could live on their own in camp.

IIRC, there are a couple of other times in the series when a nurse gets her own tent so as to ensure she'll be tete-a-tete with Hawkeye for a big scene (his former live-in, for instance). It's just barely possible that Lt. Hoffman is a specialist of some sort who's been booked into the VIP tent, I suppose.

That is definitely Kellye making goo goo eyes at Radar in the Mess Tent while they’re watching a movie.

Mm-hm. Not to mention the beauteous unnamed East Indian/Sri Lankan nurse with her arm around Klinger(!) I'm thinking the ep's theme was being subtly reinforced here.

Great Frank-makes-the-complaint-but-Hotlips-does-the-talking sequence between Henry and the Majors. "Frank, are you just gonna stand there and wait for the birds to cover you with leaves?"

Walker tells Hawkeye that Kim wouldn't 'do it' unless they were married, so he went through a sham marriage to please her. Aside from the rather icky moral position this puts a character we're supposed to be rooting for in...I have always wondered how it was explained to Kim that she and the 'hubby' needed to go through the formalities one more time. A special 'American' wedding, maybe?
