Henry in Love

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Two: Henry in Love
By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, February 08, 2000 - 6:28 pm:

Plot: While in Tokyo, Henry falls for a girl half his age. The feeling is not completely mutual.

I don't really understand why Radar got so upset in this episode. He seemed to have no problem at all with Henry's affairs with various nurses.

Nancy Sue was a little obvious, wasn't she? And not very original. I mean really--"You're tall."
Is stating the obvious supposed to be flirty?

Well, she seemed pretty dumb. As if Hawkeye wanted some little chit who was half his age and about one fourth his intelligence. I have no clue what Henry saw in her.

I found her way to giddy and totally annoying...I was happy when she finally left.

Her conversation really seemed labored. In the officers' club, when the juke box began playing some marching band-type theme (and why would they have THAT in a jukebox?) she gives a very theatrical gasp and says, "Now, you have gone and done it!" Everyone is justifiably curious, because none of the people near her started up the jukebox.

What, exactly, did she see in Henry, when she was so ready to drop him for someone else?

I think that everyone was relieved when she left.

At the very beginning of the episode, everyone (less Hawkeye and Trapper) are out in the compound listening to Radar mangle his bugle. You can see breath frosting in the chill air, indicating that it's probably morning. Frank mentions that "tonight" Henry will return from Tokyo. A scene or two later, Henry is shown returning, accompanied by martial music and waving flags, wherein lies the nit: if you look carefully during the first scene, you'll see men taking the American flag DOWN, which is something you do in the evening, accompanied by "Taps", which is not what Radar was playing. I wonder if they took several "flag" takes and ended up editing in the wrong one.

In his speech to the camp, Frank mentions Napoleon, the Kaiser and Attila the Hun. Weren’t these men considered the aggressors, the bad guys? It’s funny how Major Burns compares himself with them.

Because of syndication cuts there’s a nit in this ep. In his speech to the men, Frank says Henry will be returning that night. However, when Henry does get back to camp, it’s daytime. In the deleted scene, Margaret shows Frank her diary. Then Radar comes by to announce that Henry won’t be back for two more days. Also in this scene Radar reveals his doesn’t smoke. However in many previous episodes, Radar is seen with a cigar in his mouth.

Trapper tells Henry that OR has been busy every night that the Colonel was on leave. However, this isn’t likely, as Frank and Margaret were in her tent on the night Henry was due back, one can assume there was no casualties on that particular night.

This will be the first time Radar will have deal with his C.O. having an affair. In “Lil”, it will be Colonel Potter having the affair. On both occasions Radar will not only disapprove of the affairs, but will act his C.O.s’ conscience, reminding them of their wives.

When Henry is doing his push ups you can see a chess (or checkers) board. Wonder if it’s the one that Hawkeye and B.J. played chess on?

Hawkeye says Henry’s wife is 42. But in “Hot Lips and Empty Arms” Henry says she’s 35. Seven years must have gone by between the two eps.

Much of Nancy Sue Parker’s dialogue seem to consist of saying, “Me, too”, doesn’t it? She says it about 4 times.

In “Alcoholics Unanimous”, Frank appears surprised to learn that Margaret drinks alcohol. However, just from this episode alone Frank should know she drinks.

The song that Nancy Sue does her cheer to is “Buckle Down Winsocki.” (Thank you Closed Captioning!) Not much of a cheer Nancy does, is it, though? It’s mostly her doing some gymnast moves. Where’s the cheer (the words)?

Why doesn’t Hawkeye repeat the punchline to his joke when the jet interrupts by flying over? Now Nancy Sue and the Nurse will never know the punchline!

Hawkeye tells Nancy Sue that breakfast is at 5:00. You might think this is a joke, but near the end of the ep Radar confirms 5:00 as breakfast time. However, it seems that in other eps 6:00 is said to be breakfast time.

As for what Henry saw in her, I think it may have been purely physical. And perhaps a little vanity. Here's Henry at 44 years of age with a 21 year old that does not look upon him as a decrepit, dirty old man. That must have done wonders for his ego.
