Hey, Doc

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Four: Hey, Doc
By D.K. Henderson on Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - 7:47 am:

Plot: The doctors do a little unauthorized doctoring while a sniper assaults the camp--they get 2 bottles of Scotch for treating a British ingrown toenail, and a tank in exchange for a shot of penicillin.

By D.K. Henderson on Saturday, April 29, 2000 - 5:59 am:

Hawkeye explains to Potter why the tank commander owed him a favor, yet when Hawkeye slyly alluded to the man's problem, Potter looked at him in confusion.

Anyone know if there was any other unauthorized doctoring in this episode that was cut for syndication?

By Benn (Benn) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 10:07 pm:

There's probably not any other unauthorized doctoring. The credits only list the three "patients."

Sgt. Kimball's papers require the signatures of three doctors. In this episode, the 4077th has four - Potter, Burns, Pierce & Hunnicut. Other episodes will indicate that there are more than only four.

In this episode, B.J. chides Hawkeye for his treatment of Major Burns. Later, (especially after Frank shoots him), Hunnicut will be just as bad in his attitude towards Burns.

I am writing a lot today, but here is a big question.

In this ep. they are all in favor of bringing in a tank to scare off a snipper. Col. Potter is the biggest advocate of this. And yet, in Farewell, Amen and Goodbye (the final ep.) along with others, it is clear that the thought is that arms draw fire. In that ep., Potter is fighting to get rid of the tank. A strange change of thought.

Starting with this episode, B.J. is no longer shown running up to the chopper in the opening credits. He is seen checking out a patient on the chopper.

Just as an aside, B.J. is betting a combination of real American dollars and Army script in the poker game.

There's a scene with Radar, Klinger and Father Mulcahy in the shower that's been cut for syndication. The most important aspect of it is Mulcahy mentioning that there's a rumor about a sniper being in the area. Klinger tells him to ignore the rumor. The sniper then starts shooting.

The way you can tell the microscope has been stolen is from the clean space its absence has left on the table. Why is the table so dusty that there's a clean space where the microscope used to be? Doesn't anyone clean up in the Pre-Op? You'd think they'd want that room to be relatively clean.

How is it that Sargeant Kimble rates his own tent?

The scene where Hawkeye and the Colonel Griswald walk in on Radar and Klinger rehearsing for the talent show has been edited out, I do believe.

Griswald's reaction to the sniper fire and how Pierce and Father Mulcahy hide from it, is similar to General Steele's reactions to sniper fire in "The General Flipped At Dawn".

Why is the British officer, Chivers, driving a United States jeep? Don't the British have their own jeeps?

Instead of getting a tank to get rid of the sniper trouble, why not do like they did in the ep, "The Sniper" and send s chopper out to shoot the sniper? It worked before.

Why does Griswald send a tank to the 4077th? Hawkeye never asked for one. He just told Griswald that he had a little problem that might interest the Colonel. That the camp was under sniper fire. Nothing was said about loaning out a tank to the unit.

The tent Margaret identifies as the girls' shower has the Barber shop sign just outside of it.

If Frank drove through the Swamp through the front of the tent, shouldn't his path take him directly through the C.O. office?

Horse hockey!

This episode also contains one of the best sight gags in the series: after Frank in the tank has run over Potter's Jeep, Potter -- just like an old cavalry man -- pulls out his pistol and puts the jeep out of its misery.
