The Bus

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Four: The Bus
By D.K. Henderson on Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - 7:48 am:

Plot: Returning from a medical conference, all the doctors, plus Radar, get lost, and then the bus stalls out.

By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, February 17, 2000 - 5:50 am:

At one point, Radar brings out a walkie-talkie, and after Frank seizes on it, says that the other one is back at the 4077th, and besides, it's broken. If he knew that, why did he bother to bring it out at all? It would have made more sense for Frank to come across it.

Watching Frank trying to use a broken walkie-talkie, deaf to everyone's protests, you wonder how he ever graduated from junior high.

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, March 24, 2000 - 5:52 am:

I liked how Radar subtly blackmailed Frank into bringing out his chocolate bars, and how Frank desperately tried to make it seem as though he had totally forgotten about them. The expressions on everyone's faces made it clear that they didn't believe him. I also like the little interchange when Potter took two candy bars and handed one to the P.O.W. Frank darted a look at him, then very sensibly kept his mouth shut.

Much of the first time the guys found true love stories are edited out for syndication. It seems we heard BJ's, Frank's and Potter's stories, then when it's Hawkeye's turn, he goes to check on Radar.

By the way, how it that Hunnicutt can repair a motorbike ("Goodbye, Farewell & Amen"), but he can't do a thing with the bus? Doesn't have the first clue.

He took lessons from Rizzo sometime during the next 7 seasons.

Maybe Frank or Radar was hoping that the radio would be picked up by friendly troops in the area. Officer thinking you know.

By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, June 06, 2000 - 5:32 am:

By the way, what was going on back at the 4077th while all of their doctors were at a medical conference? What if they'd gotten wounded in? Or is this a case of using the invisible doctors, the surgical teams that you know had to be there, but never saw?

By Trekker on Saturday, June 17, 2000 - 1:17 pm:

Did anybody notice the KILROY on the bus window? I think it happens when they first get off the bus and it is the door right next to the window. KILROY WAS HERE was popular with soldiers in WWII. It's pretty funny.

By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, November 02, 2000 - 5:52 am:

I think it was B.J. who was peeking out of the bus window, and Hawkeye who quickly wrote KILROY underneath. Syndication cut.

By Benn on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 10:12 pm:

NANJAO but, according to B.J. he was at the 4077th for a week before Colonel Potter arrived. (He told told Frank, "I spent a week with you in command.")

Frank has first watch over the prisoner. Potter says he'll relieve Burns in two hours. However, far less than two hours passed and it isn't Potter who relieves Burns. It's B.J.

By D.K. Henderson on Sunday, July 20, 2003 - 5:09 pm:

It was B.J. who was peeking out the bus window, with all of his fingers curved over the top. He was wiggling his fingers and his eyebrows, without saying anything.

Col. Potter's first love happened (of course) in W.W.I. He had been temporarily blinded by gas, and spent a month in a hospital with his eyes covered, hearing only the voice of a nurse, Colette. When he got the bandages off, he pretended that he was still blind. (BTW, Potter never mentions this experience during the episode where Hawkeye was blinded.)

B.J. was the one who suggested telling stories, yet only Col. Potter and Frank spoke. B.J. and Hawkeye must have told theirs during the commercial, or perhaps they were too worried about Radar being gone to keep going.

By Benn on Saturday, January 03, 2004 - 12:49 am:

While Major Burns and Radar are looking for any familiar landmarks, roads and/or villages, Frank whips out a gun. After deciding they have gone a hundred yards in their search, Radar and Frank run back to the bus. When he starts running, Frank still has the gun out of its holster. However, when the two return to the bus, the gun is no longer in Frank's hand. It's back in its holster. Running and putting a gun into a holster would probably be a rather difficult trick. One I'm sure Frank Burns couldn't do.

As I've noted earlier, B.J. says he spent a week under Frank's command. If "Welcome to Korea" really does take place in the Spring of '52 ("It's Spring, sir!" - Klinger), and Colonel Potter took command on 19 September, 1952, then there's no way Hunnicutt spent only one week with Frank in charge. It's more like three months. At least.

Potter tells Frank the other walkie talkie is 20 miles from where they're at. They're lost. How can Potter be so sure how far away the 4077th is?

In "Welcome to Korea", Radar demonstrates that he knows how to speak at least some Korean. So why doesn't he try to communicate with the Korean prisoner?

Isn't it just amazing that Frank just happens to have enough chocolate bars to give one to each bus passenger? And just what was Frank doing with so many candy bars? (At least 7 bars.) Was he planning to use them to barter with at camp?

The last tag to this ep has been edited out for syndication. In it, B.J. finds the other walkie talkie. (Turns out it wasn't back at the 4077 after all.) Pierce and Hunnicutt give the walkie talkie to the Korean soldier. He talks into it, causing Frank to believe he's picked up the enemy. One thing, wasn't one of the walkie talkies supposed to be busted? If so, how is it that Frank and the Korean are able to talk to each other?

I think it went something like this:

Spring '52---Blake leaves, Burns takes command
later in 52---BJ arrives
Sept. 19, '52---Potter takes Command

Since BJ arrives in the middle of Burns' command. He might hav only arrive a week before Potter.

By Benn on Saturday, January 03, 2004 - 9:18 am:

I'd agree with that, except for Klinger's line in "Welcome to Korea". When Burns asks how can Klinger where that hat the Corporal has on, Max responds, "It's Spring, sir!" The weather looks right for Spring. This, of course, assumes that Klinger's comment is true - that it is springtime in Korea. If so, that means B.J. served under Frank for longer than a week, because "Welcome to Korea" takes place within 8 hours.

By ccabe on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 8:28 am:

I just rewatched "Welcome to Korea" and "Change of Command". The Blake, BJ, Potter situation went like this:

"Welcome, Part 1"-BJ arrives in Kimpo and Klinger claims it is Spring.

"Welcome, Part 2"-BJ arrives at the 4077th. Potter arrives September 19, 1952 at 1600 hours.

Since BJ and Potter arrived in the same episode, it seems unlikely BJ was under Burns command for very long. But, we probably shouldn't put too much stock in this, because this show had 4 or five Christmas epsisodes, possibly including "Change of Command" which is the episode just after Potter arrives and deals with his arrival. (BJ and Hawk put up Christmas lights at the "Corner Bar" that used to be Frank's bed.

Huh? No they didn't. "Welcome to Korea" ends with a preview of the next episode, the one where Potter arrives. It doesn't happen within the same ep. Plus, "Welcome to Korea" takes place within an eight to nine hours period. (At one point, just before Pierce, Hunnicutt and Radar stop at Rosie's, Margaret [I think it was] complains that Hawkeye has been AWOL for 7 hours.)

Except this happens just before Potter arrives at the 4077th, therefore the Henry Blake Memorial Bar was erected in September. Most likely the Christmas lights were used because that was all the Captains had to duplicate the cheesy neon lights often found in bars.
