The Kids

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Four: The Kids
By D.K. Henderson on Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - 7:54 am:

Plot: The 4077 is host to a group of kids when bombs start dropping to close to Nurse Craddie's orphanage. Frank gets a purple heart for an (egg)shell fragment, and a pregnant girl is shot by a sniper.

I thought it was so cute how the little girl kept calling Klinger mamasan.
I thought Frank was absolutely nuts in this episode. I found myself wondering how he ever got to be a doctor or an officer.
Too bad Winchester wasn't here yet. If he had heard the girl play the piano he would have recognized her talent.

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, February 18, 2000 - 4:39 pm:

One of my favorite lines in this episode was Klinger's: "No, no, not mamasan. See? No McGuffys!"

(Don't think I've ever heard that euphemism before or since.)

By Benn Allen on Wednesday, March 01, 2000 - 8:12 pm:

With that euphemism in mind, what would that make a "McGuffy Reader"?

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, May 19, 2000 - 5:28 am:

I was surprised that Frank didn't kick up more of a fuss over his Purple Heart. I loved the dialogue there: Frank: "I really would like one." B.J: "Well, with any luck at all...."

By the way, would B.J. have gotten a Purple Heart for the time that Frank shot him in the leg?

By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, June 06, 2000 - 5:35 am:

I wonder when Nurse Crattie decided to abandon the clinic she had had for some twenty years and switch to an orphanage?

By Benn on Saturday, November 30, 2002 - 6:30 pm:

Last Sunday, in the episode, "Large Marge" of The S*mps*ns ("The Forbidden Show"), Marge referred to her breasts as "McGuffies". That's the only other time I've ever heard breasts called that. Other than by Klinger in this ep.

By Justin ODonnell on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 5:07 pm:

Why was Frank making such a big deal out of getting a Purple Heart? He's acting like this is the first time he's been awarded one, yet in Sometimes You Hear the Bullet he was awarded one, for throwing his back out! In any event, his requesting that award for trivial, non-combat injuries is consistent in both episodes

By Benn on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 5:45 pm:

As I recall, Hawkeye gave Frank's Purple Heart award away to Private Wendell in "Sometimes You Hear the Bullet", also. The fact that he couldn't keep the award may be why Burns was so obsessed with getting one.

By Justin ODonnell on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 6:22 pm:

That's right! I remember that now. He just seems to have bad luck when it comes to hanging on to those awards.

One other thing. In this episode we learn that Father Mulcahy belongs to the Jesuit order.

By D.K. Henderson on Monday, July 21, 2003 - 4:47 am:

Nurse Crattie is introduced to B.J, but she and Potter greet each other as though they already knew each other. At least, there was no variation of "Pleased to meet you."

In the Swamp, with the children clamoring for a story, Hawkeye began telling one of an evil doctor who wanted to get a medal for something that he hadn't done. Frank popped up in bed and commented that he knew what Hawkeye was talking about. B.J. then started telling about Androcles and the lion. He reached the part about Androcles being arrested by the Romans ("You see, Androcles wasn't just very kind; he was also very Gentile.") The kids fell asleep at this point, and Hawkeye was disappointed because B.J. wouldn't finish the story.

I could remember the Androcles story, but not Hawkeye telling about the evil doctor. I had also forgotten that Nurse Crattie came into the Swamp for a drink. She commented on B.J. having bubble gum, refused his offer of some, then asked him not to blow bubbles in front of the children, because they would think that his stomach was coming out. She also mentioned her concern for the pregnant girl, who should have arrived by then.

I think that Father Mulcahy was annoyed with Frank. Was it really necessary to yank him out of the O.R. so hard, and cause Frank to spin while he was ripping off Frank's outer shirt?

There was also a scene in the office, with two children sleeping in what looked like a big wooden box. One of them reached up to Radar's bunk and swiped his teddy bear.

By Benn on Saturday, January 03, 2004 - 11:21 am:

Why does Margaret act like this is the first time Frank's received a Purple Heart? Surely she remembers the first time he got one? ("Sometimes You Hear the Bullet")

Aren't Purple Hearts usually given with a ceremony of some sort? Shouldn't Frank's superior officer, Colonel Potter be the one to bestow the award on the Major?

Frank said he got it when the two snipers attacked "last month". Is this a reference to "Hey Doc"?

And wouldn't Frank have to go through Potter to get that citation? How did Burns ever convince the Colonel to send in Frank's application for a Purple Heart?

Didn't Margaret give Klinger an order to get into fatigues? Yet, when the kids arrive, Max is still wearing the same outfit he was in O.R.

Nurse Cratty I believe has thus far appeared in one other episode, "The Trial of Henry Blake". She was played by a different actress then.

These orphans are surprisingly quiet. Not a one of them is shown bawling his or her head off the way most other children would be. Of course, that may be due to the War they live in.

I think that Father Mulcahy was annoyed with Frank. Was it really necessary to yank him out of the O.R. so hard, and cause Frank to spin while he was ripping off Frank's outer shirt? - D.K. Henderson

I agree. And I think the Padre was annoyed with Frank because of all the bad things the Major had been saying about the orphans. Remember, the orphans are among Father Mulcahy's main concerns.

Isn't the Purple Heart to be bestowed upon a American soldiers? Which one of those two qualifications does the Korean baby meet?

Given that Colonel Potter almost had to sign the forms requesting a Purple Heart for Frank, you have to wonder why the Colonel asks Pierce where the medal came from. How many other people in the unit were awarded the citation recently?

what was the tune the korean girl played on the piano - i've heard it as a ring tone

By Benn (Benn) on Monday, May 30, 2011 - 12:18 pm:

I'm wanting to say it's Mozart's "Eine Klein Nachtmusik", but I'm not sure that's right.

By Benn (Benn) on Friday, September 02, 2011 - 4:42 pm:

The tune the Korean girl plays is Mozart's Sonata in C Major.
