Soldier of the Month

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Four: Soldier of the Month
By D.K. Henderson on Wednesday, February 09, 2000 - 8:05 am:

Plot A: A Soldier of the Month contest, with the winner getting a trip to Tokyo.
Plot B: Frank has a fever and makes a will leaving his wife his money and Hot Lips his clothes.

This is the episode that introduced Korean Hemmoraghic (sp) Fever. Here, the only real danger is while the kidneys have shut down--they have to deny the patients water, lest they drown in their own tissues. Nothing is mentioned of the potentially lethal loss of sodium and potassium once the kidneys have started up again. Frank trots off to the latrine, and afterwards feels fine.

I wonder if Frank ever tried to patent his new, improved rat trap?

During the test, Klinger boasts that he's wearing the right underwear for his gender for the first time since he got into in the Army. While I can't be sure about the episode "Dear Dad" (he wore the bandana in that one), in "Change of Command" Colonel Potter ordered Max to to stop wearing women's clothing. It seems that it included his underwear. Because of the rash Klinger got, Hawkeye advised him to wear a slip. This indicates to me that Max wasn't wearing panties, but boxers or briefs.

When dictating his will, Frank says that he has money hid in the backyard. He also says the map showing where the money is hid in the ground chuck in the freezer. Is this a good place to hide a map? I mean eventually the meat has to be eaten or suffer freezer-burn, right?

I love how Margaret eavesdrops on the writing of the will, while trying to pretend she isn't.

We find out that the combination to Potter's safe is Mildred's measurements--42-36-42, I believe. What the Edwardians called a nice hourglass figure.

How was Klinger able to open the safe?

I finally got to see the actual ending, after many years. Potter, Hawkeye and B.J. are in the office when an M.P. comes in with "a package for you,"--a very disheveled Radar. Drunk and disorderly. Potter exclaims, "You've never gotten drunk!" Radar confides, "I think it made me disorderly, sir." The charges were: trying to drink the ink in a tattoo parlor, and swimming 50 laps in an eight-foot-wide bathhouse pool. Radar also calls Potter "Sherm."

I guess this is why, in the interview episode, Radar can't remember what he did in Tokyo, only that he had a good time.

By Benn on Sunday, January 04, 2004 - 11:55 am:

Colonel Potter obviously trusts Radar a great deal. He puts the Soldier of the Month quiz and answers in the company safe, while Radar is present, knowing that the Corporal knows the combination.

Radar's comportment and uniform doesn't seem to change much during the Soldier of the Month contest, does it? Unlike the changes seen in Igor and Klinger, say.

The nails on Frank's mousetrap do not seem to fall with enough force to really harm any mice that may be caught in it.

In this ep, when Frank faints, he falls backwards. Didn't a later episode (with Charles) state that one faints falling forward?

As he leaves for Tokyo, Radar tells Colonel Potter he broke his tootbrush last month. You mean Radar hasn't brushed his teeth in about a month?!

It's hard to believe that going to Tokyo will be Radar's first time in a big city. I mean, even if his military training wasn't in a big city, surely after a couple of years in Korea, the Corporal has been to Seoul. From what's been said of Seoul in the series, it's a big city.

Colonel Potter says Radar's never been drunk before. That's not true. He has gotten drunk in the episode "Abyssinia, Henry" and a few others, too.

Benn,

During the test, Klinger boasts that he's wearing the right underwear for his gender for the first time since he got into in the Army...

What's even more interesting is that he is still wearing pantyhose during the quiz - we can see them not only when he writes the answers down, but also when contorting himself trying to read them. Are pantyhose /nylon socks really regulation for male soldiers? ("Oh no, I've ruined my nylons, there's a tear!" :O)

Intersting that Radar, who talks about Genesis to Potter, doesn't think of cheating, and does best on the quiz. The long talk Potter gave him off-screen must have been excellent.
Even more interesting when in an earlier/later ep., Radar cheats for an exam on his correspondence course (he opens the envelope with the questions and learns them by heart).

While Klinger taking photos of the cars is very spy-like, I think its very incredible: spy cameras would have to very special cameras to work under poor lighting and produce readable photos - whenever I try to take a photo of sth. written in good light with a good camera, the writting is blurred and very hard to read. I don't think Klinger with a soldiers/nurse pay could afford an expensive camera and good film.
So how and who did develop these prints - Klinger himself? Where did he get the knowledge and equipment? Sb. else - why didn't he rat on Klinger, or cheat, too? And why did Klinger have the prints so quick?
Would it really have taken so much longer for Klinger to copy the answers by hand?

Why has Zale memorised the capital of states if its mentioned several times that the quiz is about US history?

As he leaves for Tokyo, Radar tells Colonel Potter he broke his tootbrush last month. You mean Radar hasn't brushed his teeth in about a month?!

I think Radar was always portrayed as a little backwards and uneducated in matters of hygiene, since he comes from a farm.

This is the episode that introduced Korean Hemmoraghic (sp) Fever...

What I find strange is that Mulcahey says that the Nisei who when dealing with the fever in the 30s, read about in an old Japanese medicine book and recognized the symptons, but that there is no treatment. I find it hard to believe that over centuries, the local doctors haven't come up with any herb conoction to use against this fever. (They could still have said "We don't know how this plant looks like/ it hasn't been tested by the army/ the plant can't be found").

In another ep., there was a rash going around which a Korean helped allievate with some herb paste, and everybody was eager. That made more sense.

Not to delve into too delicate matters, but when Frank is off to the latrine, why is there no sound of running ... water.., and the others outside get worried? Is this a specialized soundproof latrine? :)

By D.K. Henderson on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 4:58 am:

During the latrine scene (ah, a rhyme!) a concerned Margaret calls out to Frank, who responds rather testily. I think that what he was meant to say was "Can't a fellow have a little privacy?" What came out--at least to my ears--sounded like "Can't a fellow have a little private?" I really don't think that you'd want to make comments like that around a military installation....

By constanze on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 6:00 am:

Which is a typical Frank reaction - after all, though his fever is down, he still looks very shaky, so the danger of him collapsing inside the latrine is possible. (Would he fall in the hole and drown, or do the officers have a sit-down toilet? Anybody know? Or shall we stop this topic?)

Radar probably hasn't had R 'N' R for awhile so he probably hasn't been able to buy a new toothbrush for awhile,it doesn't neccessarily have to do with hygiene, also being from a farm doesn't make him backward.Too much indication of
snobbishness from people who live in megacities I would think.
Also remember they have to wait for supplies to get in before such things as toothbrushes can be properly replaced.Perhaps the last supply run was a month ago and the next won't be for a couple more weeks.
Did you ever think that might be a possible reason?
It's amazing how people who live in megacities can have the kneejerkiest ideas about those who live in less urban areas.

Well, first of all, there's the black market. Surely toothbrushes could be found there. Or at the local PX. Or Radar could have asked someone else who's gone on R&R in the last month to bring him a toothbrush. (It wouldn't be the first time somebody would be asked to bring back something from Seoul.) And it's hard to believe the 4077th wouldn't have a supply of toothbrushes on hand. I mean, after all, how many of the wounded that arrive at the Four-Oh-Double-Natural arrive without a toothbrush? Surely the camp would need to have some on hand for them. In my mind, there's any number of ways Radar could've already gotten a toothbrush before going on leave.
