The Price of Tomato Juice

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Four: The Price of Tomato Juice

Plot: Radar goes to a great deal of trouble in order to secure a steady supply of tomato juice for Col. Potter.

One point they never brought up at the end--Radar like tomato juice, and surely there were other personnel who enjoyed it, so the whole hassle was not a total loss.

Frank wants nylons for Margaret, so the doctors go to Klinger, rather than asking any of the nurses. (By the way, I don't think I would want a pair of used nylons.) Klinger refused to give up his "lucky pair" (Didn't he have any others?) because his uncle had used them to get out of WWII. Wow. They sure don't make nylons the way they used to.

I forgot to include a favorite line from Father Mulcahy regarding Col. Potter: "He's a good Christian--yet hardly dull at all."

Not to mention B.J's line: "Frank, stop trying to bring the war in under budget."

Considering the fact that Frank and Margaret have had a thing for a couple of years (figuring the format that Henry was commander for a couple of years in Mash time), doesn't it seem strange that, when the note comes to Margaret proposing marriage that she doesn't notice that the handwriting is not Frank's? (It is either Hawkeye's, BJ's or Radar's writing). She should recognize a forgery.

At one point Frank asks Igor his name. Igor tells him it's "Maxwell". Apparently the actor playing Igor forgot his character's name. Igor was, of course, played by Jeff Maxwell.

Is the General Bradley Barker mentioned in this ep the same General Barker from the first season? He does know Margaret. And judging by how quickly he agrees to let Klinger have the two-day pass, he knows of the Corporal. If it is the same General Barker, it's very interesting as I thought he had been removed from command of the 4077th's sector long ago.

The nit I posted about Igor's name is slightly inaccurate. I got from a M*A*S*H website and they described the nit as I posted it. What actually happened is that Burns is garbage officer and he's watching to see how much food everyone is throwing away. The Major sees Igor is throwing away what he feels is too much food. Frank threatens to put Igor on KP duty. Igor replies that he is already on KP duty. Burns then informs Igor "you'll be doing more KP, Maxwell."

This episode is yet another that is too close to the plot of "For Want of a Boot". "Hey Doc!", an ep from earlier this season is also similar to "For Want of a Boot".

After Pierce makes a smart remark about the food in the Mess Tent to Klinger, Max wonders what they expect out of him. He only serves the food. I thought that's what Maxwell, er, Igor does. (BTW, Igor is the first person to give his name as "Maxwell" when Frank asks for his name.) (And why doesn't Frank know his name? Igor's been there quite awhile. He was even a contestant in the Soldier of the Month contest.)

In this ep Radar mentions having a little brother who is dead. Where'd this brother come from? I believe in "Abyssinia, Henry", Radar told Colonel Blake that his dad suffered a stroke while playing peek-a-boo when Radar was little. Not to mention that Walter's father was 63 when he had Radar. A later episode indicates that Radar's mother never remarried. So, where'd this dead baby brother come from?

Why are Hawkeye and B.J. concentrating on the one pair of nylons Klinger has just hung up. Surely the Corporal has more than one pair in the Klinger Collection.

I love how Radar tries to pull a stunt on Colonel that always worked on Henry. Radar enters with a bunch of papers to be signed, and tries to slip in Klinger's two-day pass among them. Often this would work with Henry. It fails miserably with Potter. I don't think Radar ever tried it again.

Because this episode mentions that it's election time back in the States, this episode takes place in either late September or in October of 1952.

In this ep, Colonel Potter says Klinger looks a lot like his son. This marks the second mention of the Colonel's son in the series.

I realize that Colonel Potter characterizes his patient as being a "superficial leg wound", but the patient is covered from head to toe with linen. Is that really how you'd operate on a superficial wound? And why are he and Margaret wearing scrub masks?

The last tag for this ep has been cut for syndication. It ends with Colonel Potter thanking Radar for trying to get the tomato juice, but he warns the Corporal that the next time Radar wants to surprise his C.O. to tell him first. Then Klinger returns from the party with General Barker. Seems the General and Klinger got along quite well. Barker even saved Klinger from a Congressman who couldn't keep his hands off the Corporal.

Horse hockey!
