Plot: A helicopter pilot with diabetes wants to make Chopper Pilot of the Year, while a twice-wounded GI wants out.

I was wondering what the cut-off point was for Chopper Pilot of the Year. I didn't understand how Jack could ever think he would win it after he was grounded, because the other pilot was still healthy and flying. Perhaps Jack can console himself with the medal Potter put him up for.

I'd like to know how Jack could have been a pilot in the first place? The standard exam he and everyone else undertook before joining the service would have brought it out. Or, if he had developed diabetes after he joined, how the heck would he have known what was wrong with him without a...medical exam?

Maybe he tasted his urine, and it was sweet, and that was how he knew he had diabetes... *grin*

As a more serious answer, maybe he found out that he had diabetes at first just b/c he had some symptoms (like frequent urination and incredible thirst, or increased appetite and loss of weight). He came into the 4077 taking contraband insulin, right? Maybe he suspected because of the symptoms, and did a urine dipstick and it showed sugar in the urine. Of course, that leads one to wonder how he avoided over dosing on it, or how he knew he was getting enough. I guess it's another Hollywood miracle.

Ah... Shades of "Young Doctors In Love". "There are 47 different bodily fluids, and I'm proud to say that I've tasted them all!"

Hawkeye has probably the most nonsensical line in this ep. as he is trying to be thoughtful to Jack. When they are taking his wings and pilot's license, Hawkeye says "Sorry Jack. I guess I'll sell my stock in club soda."

When they took his pilots license, did they take his bubble water license too? I think that he will still be drinking the club soda. It is one of those nice statements that means nothing and makes no sense to boot.

The uncut version ends back in the OR, with Col. Potter telling another anecdote about pilot Duncan McShane, who once flew his plane straight through a hanger, turned around, and flew back through it again. His commanding officer told him, "I told you to put that plane in the hangar!" McShane replied, "I've had it in there twice; someone needs to lock the door!"

Hawkeye commented that Col. Potter had lots of memories stored up from three wars, then asked him which one had been the worst. Suddenly, a voice cuts in over the intercom, announcing that a troop (possibly from England, it was called Gloucestershire or something like that) had lost 500 men from a 600 men unit. Potter said, "Each and every one of them, Hawkeye. Each and every one of them."

The very first thing said in this ep contains another M*A*S*H "47": "Lookout Two, we're approaching Hill 347."

In looking at Corporal Owens comic book, B.J. ponders how it is that Lois Lane can never figure out that Superman and Clark Kent are the same person. It's even harder when you consider that the comic book Hunnicutt is looking at is not a Superman comic. It's Amazing Spider-Man. Probably issue number 70. (I could barely tell it was a Spider-Man comic by using the Zoom function on my DVD player.)

The stack of comic books next to Corporal Owens changes somewhat from one shot to the next. In the second shot, there's a black shadow that wasn't there before.

From the dialogue, it sounds like Colonel Potter knew Jack Mitchell before the Colonel was assigned to the 4077th. He may even have patched up a wound on Jack's hand then. Yet "Change of Command" made it clear that Potter was a desk jockey just before arriving at the MASH unit. I suppose they meant that he hadn't been practicing surgery, but Potter mentions that he hadn't seen Mitchell since at the 121st Evac. So apparently the Colonel has been practicing some medicine. Least that's how it sounds to me.

Aid stations are located at the front, right? Then because of B.J.'s comment that he hasn't "had the pleasure" of going to the front yet, we can assume this ep takes place before "Der Tag".

Radar got run over by a Jeep?! How'd he survive that? Radar mentions it when talking about his four leaf clover and why it's "squished." If that clover was in Radar's breast pocket then, as it is in this ep, then you've gotta wonder how he avoided getting killed by the experience.

Horse hockey!
