Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Four: Deluge

Plot: A heavy increase of wounded, along with a fire, a rainstorm, a new influx of Chinese soldiers, and the possibility of shipping out the nurses, which Margaret fights.

Great bit of dialogue, after Hawkeye tells a soldier to stop smoking near the OR:
Soldier: "Hey, I'm a sergeant!"
Hawkeye: "And I'm a Captain, which means if we're blown up I'll fly higher than you!"

Which didn't stop that idiot from lighting up again and starting a fire.

Speaking of the fire, why didn't Radar and Klinger just shove that hamper out into the pouring rain?

Another great bit of dialogue in the shower:
Potter: "It could get ugly."
(Sound of an explosion)
Margaret: "Uglier than our own mines trying to kill me? Uglier than rats mating in my duffel bag?"

And I loved the last scene, where Potter walked past a startled Frank into the nurses' shower: "Just wanted to thank you for staying."

In this episode, we see Hawkeye making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Later, B.J. would ask Aggie O'Shay for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Caught the end of this episode tonight, and I noticed something interesting. While Radar and Klinger were putting out the fire, the light bulb burst over B.J.'s patient. Frank instantly whipped around, asked what happened, and leaped to his assistance. No commentary, no complaints, nothing. Also, when a mine blew in the window moments later, Frank was too busy to jump or shriek.

Watched my disc of this last night. The only really noticeable cut that I saw was a scene where Klinger and someone else are scrubbing out a long sink. Klinger's doing a monologue about how he ended up scrubbing sinks. The other man looks at him occasionally, but doesn't say a word. Klinger is going on about how the Army refused a gung-ho neighbor of his (whom he described as a Nazi) because he had flat feet, but they accepted Klinger. Klinger kept doing everything backwards when he was undergoing the Army's medical exam, until they finally told him, "Keep this up and we'll make you an officer!"

Immediately after this scene is the one where they bring in the patient with phosphorous burns. The funny thing is, Klinger and the other man are scrubbing the sink right up to when they carry the patient in, but the sink is instantly full of (hopefully) clean water.

During the final, hectic OR scene, Radar drops his tray of sandwiches, and, over the babel, you can hear him say that it took him three months to requisition the peanut butter and jelly. This might explain why B.J. later considered it a hard-to-get treat.

Because we see Harry S. Truman is the President of the United States in one of the newsreels, I think it's safe to say that this ep takes place in 1952.

Radar's handing out beers, compliments of the doctors, to Post-Op patients. You can bet Frank didn't have anything to do with it. I'd imagine he went running to Colonel Potter when he found out about it.

One thing you missed D.K. is that just before Pierce and B.J. bring in the phosporous burns patient, Klinger turns on the sink. It's a subtle motion on Max's part and easy to miss.

Are the newsreels supposed to be contemporary with the actions seen at the 4077th? If so, we may have a problem. Was General MacArthur given a ticker tape parade after being relieved of command in the Far East? MacArthur was relieved of his command of the Far East forces in 1951. It's not possible for this ep to take place in '51. Colonel Potter didn't take command of the MASH unit until Sept. of '52.

Horse hockey!
