Margaret's Engagement

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: M*A*S*H: Season Five: Margaret's Engagement

Plot: Margaret returns from Tokyo, but instead of news of Frank's promotion, she announces her engagement. Frank reacts accordingly.

It was obvious right from the start what sort of man Lt. Col. Donald Penobscot was going to be. First the engagement ring that needed a magnifying glass to see the stone, and then the photograph. I mean, what sort of man gives his fiancee a photograph of himself with another woman? ("I think she's a cousin." "Mmmm. Close family.")

Apparently Major Houlihan never loved Frank. In this ep, Margaret says, "I could never love anybody who didn't out rank me." Frank Burns was, of course, the same rank as Margaret - a Major.

Everyone at the 4077th had something that helped keep them sane. For Frank, it appears that his relationship with Margaret was his anchor to reality. Beginning with this episode we'll see Major Burns' sanity slowly deteriorate.

I love that closing insult Frank lays on Margaret. Like the episode "Showtime" before it, this ep demonstrated that Burns could dish it out, too. It's almost a pity we never saw more of this side of Frank.

Unlike what we saw in the episode "Der Tag", this ep shows Hawkeye and B.J. genuinely being nice to Burns. Particularly Hawkeye. It is very strange to see Pierce show such concern over Ferret Face. He would do so several more times over the course of this season.

I guess for the first time Hawk could relate to franks behaviour. When frank is shouting at the normal soldiers, hawk doesn't like him, but when a women is breaking up with frank and telling how good the new guy is, hawk can imagine how he himself would feel.

I love the way radar and hawk react when frank doesn't dress him down and is nice instead. You can almost hear everybody thinking "Now he has gone crazy for sure" :)

Margaret comes off as an insensitive witch in this episode! Granted, it was inevitable that she and Frank would eventually split up, but she did so in a very callous manner.b She goes around flaunting her engagement gushes about how great Donald is right in front of Frank's face, completely oblivious as to how this is hurting him! No deserves that kind of treatment from there ex, not even Ferret Face! Boy, did I feel sorry for him! Larry Linville delivered a great performance in this episode.

I can't help wondering just what Radar said to Mrs. Burns when he called her. I also loved the way that Radar talked Frank into handing him his rifle, and the look on his face once Frank left the room.

Potter isn't kidding about how bad General Tumwater's toupee is. It doesn't even cover up the bald spot on the back of his head.

What's so unusual about Frank clucking like a chicken? Why is that a sign that something's wrong with the Major? Earlier in the ep, just before the meeting in the Mess Tent, Major Burns was putting talcum powder on while clucking out "Back In the Saddle Again". And he was happily anticipating seeing Margaret at the time.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the cut scenes occurs just after Frank congratulates Radar for getting penicillan on the black market at the regular price. The Major offers Radar a job at a chain of pet mortuaries that he owns. (Frank owns something other than his medical practice? When did this happen?)

"Mule fritters!"

Gotta comment on all the clucking Frank does in this ep. It's a nice subtlety. The reason Frank goes after the Korean family, claiming they're guerillas, is that Margaret called him "a coward", i.e. "chicken". Nice touch of foreshadowing.

When Margaret tells Potter on the phone that she has "BIG" news to tell all, she has NO engagement ring on her left ring finger which is clearly shown.

Also Margaret tells Potter, Donald is everthing she asked him for when he dressed as Santa last Christmas, problem, Henry was there last Christmas, not Potter.

In the scene where Franks rips off the doors exiting the mess tent,

I heard that was done in ONE TAKE!
