What about that guy who was supposed to be Tarzan but they had to use a similar-sounding name (I forget exactly what) so they wouldn't get sued by the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate?

Kraven the Hunter? That was The most dangerous game a book about how a Russian Aristocrat is living on a island hunting shipwrecked sailors, but doesn't go into the details of where he gets his fine cigars, or how his one mute servant can upkeep the whole house et cetra.

The person Todd Pence refers to is Ka Zar, I believe. Ka Zar's real name is Kevin Plunder and he is a British aristocrat by birth. There are several differences between Tarzan and Ka Zar. Ka Zar has a pet sabre toothed tiger, Zabu, who accompanies Ka Zar on his adventures. Ka Zar also has a brother who was a supervillain (The Plunderer. What a great name for Parnival Plunder to assume. |End sarcasm mode|) Most importantly, Ka Zar resides in the Savage Land, a place found under Antarctica where dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals and people live.

However, the current Marvel version of Ka Zar is the second version. The original Ka Zar was created in 1939 by Bob Byrd for Marvel Comics #1. Originally, Ka Zar's alter ego was David Rand (a relative of Daniel Rand, Iron Fist?). Additionally, this Ka Zar resided in the Belgian Congo and had befriended a lion named Zar (Originally, Ka Zar's name meant "brother to Zar".) His last appearance was in Marvel Mysery Comics #27. The original Ka Zar was much closer to Edgar Rice Burroughs' most famous creation than the current one is.

The current version of Ka Zar debuted in 1965 in The X-Men #10.

The Most Dangerous Game was adapted into a movie of the same name in the early 30s and starred Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong of King Kong fame. I think they have the same director. It's a pretty good movie, overall, though I swear some of the jungle background scenes were used in King Kong. There was also an episode of Gilligan's Island that used the same basic plot. It was one of my favorite eps.

>There are several differences between Tarzan and >Ka Zar. Ka Zar has a pet sabre toothed tiger, >Zabu, who accompanies Ka Zar on his adventures.

Tarzan had a pet lion, Jad-bal-ja, who accompanied him on many of his adventures.

>Ka Zar also has a brother who was a supervillain

The original Tarzan never had a brother, although he had a few villanous look-alikes (the most famous Estaban Miranda, and later Stanley Obroski and Colin T. Randolph, Jr.) who impersonated him.

>Most importantly, Ka Zar resides in the Savage >Land, a place found under Antarctica where >dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals and >people live.

Tarzan spent much time adventuring in the world of Pellucidar, which lies beneath the Earth's surface and is accesible from the pole. It was populated by prehistoric beasts and people.

Well, Jad-bal-ja (introduced in Tarzan and the Golden Lion) was a recurring character. He was not, as I recall, Tarzan's brother. (I haven't read the Tarzan novels in years. I have been working on re-reading the Mars books.) Zabu has been shown in just about every comic book featuring Ka Zar.

Dude, do you want to count how many times Stan Lee had his stars impersonated by a bad guy. Besides, is a look-a-like the same thing as a brother? Ka Zar and his brother are not twins.

Uh, Todd, that was in one novel - Tarzan at the Earth's Core. On the other hand, I will grant you that the Tarmangani did visit a land in Africa where prehistoric creatures still existed. That was in Tarzan the Terrible. However, unlike Tarzan, Ka Zar's home is in the Savage Land, the land where prehistory still lives.
