Downright creepy/bizzare moments

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Spiderman: The Spider Web (ie the sink): Downright creepy/bizzare moments
By Mark Bowman on Sunday, July 25, 1999 - 2:35 am:

This is to discuss some of the various disturbing
and downright creepy moments in Spider Man
(all of the cartoon series, any Spider man movies,
and comic books).

One of them I remember well was when Firestar
was talking about how a friend of her's became
a half man half robot. The story featured a scientist
who got caught in an explosion from a science project.
The experement literaly burned the skin of his
body to a crisp from head to toe on the entire
left side of his body, and completly shaddered the left side
of his protective suit. The right side of the suit and
body remained normal. I found this very sickning
indeed, and I was wondering why this plot device
is still being used today (Kahn from Startrek 2 when
the reliant was completly crippled, Volcano, when
a worker got burned by volcanic gasses, Two face
from Batman are just some examples.)

How about turning into a bloodthirsty lizard, and having the one arm you're missing be regenerated then? Not a very good tradeoff, really.

I remember that episode of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends. You brought it up in the 'Comics' section, too.

There are of course a number of disturbing moments in classic Spider-Man stories, too. The scene in 'Kraven's Last Hunt' where the deranged Kraven stuffs live spiders into his mouth still grosses me out. Apparently, he does it to 'absorb the essence of the Spider' or something like that.

Of course, one has to mention the second Hobgoblin's deal with the demon N'astirh during 'Inferno'. Macendale offered to 'trade his soul for power'. N'astirh laughed at the idea. "Your soul?!!! What would I want with your soul? Have you LOOKED at it lately? Disgusting!" But he DID give the second Hobgoblin (Jason Macendale) power, but at a price.

The price was that the Hobgoblin's face was now deformed and demon-like, making him more of a true Hobgoblin. Some years later, however, Macendale regained his human form, but in the process Demogoblin (a demonic 'Goblin') was born.

Apparently, Macendale's Hobgoblin wasn't considered as exciting as the original Hobgoblin, so they gave him the 'demonic' treatment. Macendale was later killed off in the HOBGOBLIN LIVES limited series when the true original Hobgoblin made his return.

Venom and Carnage, when handled right (by, say, J.M. Dematteis) can be creepy, but mostly they're just over-the-top loonies, especially Carnage.

Most of the Venom: Shiver series.
