Unreal/Unreal Tournament

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: PC Games: The Games: Unreal/Unreal Tournament
By MarkN on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 1:20 am:

I only have Unreal for now but I may get UT later. I see it's gone down $10 to about $30 now at Wal-Mart, with a $10 mail-in rebate, but CNET.com's Game Shopper has a list of it as low as $22.95 at one online merchant. Not bad. They had Unreal for only $10 so I thought I'd try it out.

By MarkN on Sunday, September 24, 2000 - 12:44 am:

I got this game today but it didn't come with the rebate, like I thought it would.

By Derek on Tuesday, September 26, 2000 - 9:36 am:

UT is awesome! The deathmatches are much better than the original (and even beat Quake 3, IMHO). The team games are really cool like Assault and Domination. Don't miss out on this game, but it today.

By cableface on Thursday, September 28, 2000 - 1:38 pm:

I agree, and If you have the time to spare, I advise you to get the UT4Ever mod.It gives you new skins, maps and about 40 new weapons.Totally worth the two-hour download.

By MarkN on Friday, September 29, 2000 - 5:26 am:

I can't play this game at all! It installed just fine but whenever I try to play it I keep getting a "Critical Error" message, and I've no idea what that is or how to fix it. Any suggestions? The Unreal name comes up and all but it won't let me play. Is my 400mhz, 128 RAM system too small for it? I don't have a 3D acc card, either, but I wish I did.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, September 29, 2000 - 7:43 pm:

You definitely need a 3D accelerator for any decent results in this type of thing. Or anything, really. And as much RAM as you can afford helps too.

By MarkN on Saturday, September 30, 2000 - 3:48 am:

I doubled me RAM from 64 to 128. I uninstalled this game to see if Wal-Mart will take it back for exchange. MJ says they won't refund my money for copyright reasons or somesuch but I'll see what I can do. Likewise with Half-Life if I can't get it to look better. If I'm stuck with the games I'll just wait till I get a better system to play them on.

By Derek on Monday, October 23, 2000 - 11:10 am:

I don't mean to insult you, but how could expect to play a FPS without a 3D accelerator?

By Someone Else on Monday, October 23, 2000 - 12:07 pm:

I managed to do in on a terrifically revved-up PC. I had terrible frame-skipping sometimes, but it worked.

By MarkN on Thursday, October 26, 2000 - 4:50 am:

Derek, I'm not insulted. I've played other FPS games with no problems, other than that they don't look quite as sharp as I'd like them to. Maybe it's my graphics card. The system is an almost-2yo IBM Aptiva and I'll tell ya my next one definitely won't be an IBM brand. Maybe an HP. Derek, what acc card do you recommend that's not too costly? I saw a Voodoo3 for about $120 at Circuit City, but some of the newer games demand even better cards. I don't know how much video RAM I have but I know it's probably not too much.

By Derek on Saturday, October 28, 2000 - 1:27 pm:

I've got a Diamond Viper V770 Ultra, featuring nVIDIA's TNT2 chipset. It's got 32 MB of RAM, with 32 bit rendering and z-buffer. It gets about 70-80 fps on 800X600 resolution for all games, including Unreal Tournament.

It's over year old and nVIDIA has released several next generation chipsets like the GeForce, GeForce 2, and GeForce 2 Ultra so you may be able to find it for a decent price.

Keep in mind that the TNT2 chipset based cards are not tomorrow's technology. Tomorrow's cards like the GeForce 2's feature Transform and Lighting technology that allow for insane colors, and resolutions at incredible frame rates because they operate independent of the CPU. So you may want to buy one of them so you are covered for a while. I'll warn you that they are not cheap. They'll run about $300 a pop.

Lastly, I would recommend against buying a Voodoo3. They only offer 16 MB RAM and 16 bit rendering and will not yield the higher frame rates.

I hope this answers your question.

By MarkN on Sunday, October 29, 2000 - 1:25 am:

Oh, just barely but I'm sure it'll suffice. *S* Thank you. The Voodoo3 I saw, if memory serves, was a 3000 or 3300, if that makes any difference. They had a cheaper 2000 or 2500 for about $60.

By MarkN on Sunday, November 12, 2000 - 2:43 am:

Now there's a new Unreal Tournament with more games to it, but it's around $50 or so. The other earlier UT is about only 2/3 that or less.

By Derek on Friday, November 17, 2000 - 1:07 pm:

I saw the Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition for $30 at Electronics Boutique.

By MarkN on Saturday, November 18, 2000 - 5:08 am:

The one I have is the blue box, and I think that's the one you saw, Derek. It's the cheaper one and I've seen both with the Game of the Year Edition sticker so I guess you saw the original blue boxed one.

By Derek on Saturday, November 18, 2000 - 4:38 pm:

Nope. It was the orange one.

By MarkN on Sunday, November 19, 2000 - 12:46 am:

I was at a mall videogame store tonight and they have the new Unreal Gold version, which is the original with 17 added games and weapons for only $10, and they also have UT in the blue box for only $20 while the GofYE is only $34.99, making a liar out of Wal-Mart for saying they're the low price leader. They have the UT GotYE for about $50.00, the bastards. Man, it sure pays to wait till games go down in price cuz I got UT for $30 at Wal-Mart and now it's $10 cheaper in the mall and not only that but also still has the $10 mail-in rebate!

If you want to play CounterStrike and have neither Half-Life nor an internet connection, and have UT, I suggest you try some of the CS clones for UT - a few are actually really, really good.

By Peter on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 6:38 am:

Do you have a link? I do actually own Half Life and Counterstrike, but I much prefer Unreal Tournament anyway. I'd be interested in knowing where such mods can be downloaded.

Peter.

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Wednesday, March 14, 2001 - 11:13 pm:

Try http://www.fileplanet.com , or http://www.planetunreal.com , which mod's are the cs clones? I know assault is the same basic idea, but it is very diffrent in many ways. I tried unreal fortress (UT's TFC) and it is really cool, much better then HL TFC IMHO

By MarkN on Thursday, March 15, 2001 - 3:18 am:

Thanks, Chris. I've been checking out the news of the new Unreal engine that's coming out later. Very interesting.

By Peter on Thursday, March 15, 2001 - 2:08 pm:

Thanks Chris. That is a hell of a site. I am really grateful.

Peter.

One wonderful mode of gameplay for UT if your system can run is to put 16 bots on novice, instagib mutator, 50 kill limit, and 200% game speed on the Deathmatch Map Stalwart. It has to be played to be believed, but it really is wonderful. The gore in such a game is unbelievable.

Peter.

By Sven of Nine on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 4:51 pm:

For extreme silliness, try a 20 min time limit, stealth (invisibility) on all players, insta-gib, the NukeDeath mutator available on the Net; put 16 novice Bots in, and watch from afar as a spectator.
Passes the time, eh?

By Sven again on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 4:52 pm:

And, if you want to join in, it's a good way of perfecting those long-distance aims.

For fun ghost (no clip) into a skybox and drop Nali's in them ("summon nali" is the console command to do it if I remember correctly), then go back into the level a d feast your eyes on the 1000 foot Nalis in the sky. :-)
