What do you think are the best or worst PC games and why?

I don't know if you will be interested in my opinion or not, but I would say the Total Annihilation games are the best.

The great range of units and possible styles of play mean you can do almost anything. No game can ever be similar. Every battle has atmosphere and allows you to think through your strategy when you lose and feel very pleased when you win. Included with both games are the map editors allowing you to design your own battlefields, and TA even allows you to create your own missions. So really there is nothing to stop you playing forever.

Peter.

Peter, the first Total Annihlation was undoubtedly one of the best games of all time for your noted reasons. But, Kingdoms was seriously lame. It's too bad that Cavedog went bankrupt because of that game's failure.

Well I agree Kingdoms causing Cavedog to go bankrupt was a disaster, but I think this is undeserved. If you have actually played the Kingdoms missions up to say Chapter 20, and had some multiplayer fights you would see how much fun it can be. The graphics are undoubtedly excellent too, and really make the game more enjoyable. Like you, though, I think the first TA was the best.

BTW, do you know if there are any plans for a Total Annihilation 2? I have read rumours and seen a recent advert somewhere where you can pre-order a copy. I hope there will be one, but I do not know who could be making it.

Peter.

Peter, I finished the game and I can tell you that it doesn't get too much better past Chapter 20. The last mission took me about 5 hours to complete because superpower units are lacking like the Big Bertha or Nukes (like in TA) to finish off the enemy. This makes for a really annoying game--build a 100 unit force, watch all the men get slaughtered by hordes of towers; repeat this over and over until everything's destroyed.

Most of the game's units stink. The Gods are great, but they never show up. (FYI, they can be built by the Monarch with the latest patch from Cavedog.) The superdragons stink because they get wasted too fast and hardly put out any damage. I'd rather build about 30 Drakes or Sky Knights in the same time it takes to build one superdragon. The worst are Berserkers. Order 10 of them to attack a defenseless lodestone and at least 5 end up dead because of their pointless "area effect" damage--also a horrible design element.

As for TA2, it's been taken over by another company. I can't remember which one, but I'm not keeping my hopes very high. I think the true magic of TA was brought about by Chris Taylor. For now, he's working on an action role-play game, Dungeon Siege, that will be out late next year. Watch for that one.
