Doom

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: PC Games: The Games: Doom

This is quite possibly the best game ever created. In my opinion, it stands the test of time very well. The graphics are not state of the art now, but they are still more likable than most games of the era.it is really colorful, and provides something that is a rarity in first person shooters these days: variety. every level is different than the last, at least in the first two episodes. It ushered in a new era, and is still the best of the bunch, at least to me. One quibble I've always had with it was that once you beat an episode, your weapons, and ammo are gone as soon as you start the next one. I would have at least expected some bull explanation about it, like "Once you transport to a new base, then you are stripped of everything you have," or SOMETHING! I can understand this in Inferno, where you are supposedly in Hell itself. Also, Thy Flesh consumed is just too damned hard! I can't even beat the bas**** on the easiest skill level. And finally, I thought that the Spidermind was far to easy for the last Boss, and that little bunny on a stick was disturbing, but funny in a kind of dark way. My favorite baddie? The Imp. My least favorite? Tie: The Lost Souls, and the Specters. My Favorite Level? Tie: The Tower of Babel, and the Central Processing

A co-worker introduced me to Doom several years ago and I still play it peroidically. It stands up well over time with the only change I would like to see would be up/down aiming. It was always annoying to be shot by something you can't see.
I read in in some gaming magazine that a new version is under development. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I've always wondered but never bothered to actually try: Is it possible to beat Doom without using cheat codes? I know for a fact that it isn't possible in Doom 2.
Personally, for a first person shooter I prefer Dark Forces, which does include up and down aim and some weapons that are just plain better. I'd take an Imperial Repeater over Doom's chaingun any time. The levels in DF are better as well, with platforms on top of platforms, which can't be done in Doom. But Doom has some advantages to it, like easy customization. I've seen some really cool conversions for Doom (like Aliens TC) while DF addons tend to be pretty generic.

Eh, Butch B, there already is a new version of Doom its called ZDoom. Its very similar to Quake I with the aiming and console and other options. Unless u were refering to the new Doom that theyre making which I hope will be sweet.

Eh, D.W. I have finished Doom many many times without the use of one cheat code, its so easy (probably cause Ive played it SO much). And Doom ][ is also passable without cheats, thou its harder, I passed it on Ultra-Violence, but never on Nightmare.

In my opinion Doom is the 3rd best First Person Shooter ever made, 1 - Deus Ex 2 - Half-Life 3 - Doom / Doom ][

I'm having difficulty getting Doom to run. I remember running a Win95-specific version of Doom, which was perfect, but relied on the fact that I needed a decent joystick to get the mouse controls working well (at the time my joystick was broken), but lost that copy very quickly. Is there a specific copy of this version around anywhere?

Is there also a way of getting hold of older copies of Doom (1 and 2), Quake (1 and 2) etc. as I'm feeling very nostalgic indeed!!! (and can't find copies of them anywhere in the shops - the only versions of them are for either Mac or Linux!!!)

I tried Q2 on my new system but it's acting very funny. Maybe it's cuz I had the resolution so high, at 920x800, or whatever it was. I'll try 800x600 next time. That's what I play Unreal Gold at, which, btw, runs just fine on my Dell.

Late reply to Ciapa (sorry it took so long) but yes I was refering to the new Doom still in development. I hope it gets released sometime this year.

Well, looks like nobody's posted here in awhile, so I'll have to change that.

Go to this site: http://www.it-he.org

Get the add-ons "The Sky May Be" and "Kansam's Trial."

A month or so ago, I showed a friend of mine what happens when you use the no clipping code walk out of the level turned around and faced it.
My friend was astonished at the way the floors and ceilings seem to stretch from your position, and remarked at how weird it was. I then explained to her how it worked, that the floor and ceiling information render from the lines (walls) of the sectors/doors/rooms in order to create the
enviroments.

I like the look people get on their face when they see something like this for the first time. :)

I would like to see modern games have cheat codes such as no clip just to see what the designers have hidig outside of the play area (do games still use monster storage areas like Doom and Quake did for holding monstrrs until they are ready to be used in game?)
