Tie Fighter

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: PC Games: The Games: Star Wars Games: Tie Fighter
By Jake Dominguez on Monday, May 31, 1999 - 8:10 pm:

I personally thought this was an excellent game, and I am glad to own it. It was great to be able to be the bad guys for once in the Star Wars genre. The ongoing story is one of my favorite features.

By Cougar Leader on Monday, June 14, 1999 - 1:38 pm:

Surely someone else came across this. Why, in Battle 6 Mission 3, does the friendly platform fire on you for so much as flying behind the captured B-Wing?

By Cougar Leader on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 9:39 am:

Hello? Anyone home?

By Jake Dominguez on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 4:24 pm:

Hmm... I haven't noticed that in my copy of the game. I'll have to check that. By the way, I guess there aren't as many people interested in TIE Fighter as I thought there would be. I expected this section to have 20 posts by now...

By Cougar Leader on Monday, July 05, 1999 - 7:38 am:

Try "Star Wars" games in general!

By Cougar Leader on Monday, August 09, 1999 - 11:47 am:

Yo, Jake! I just realized I should have told you before, the version of the game that I have is the old Collector's CD-ROM, not the new enhanced version. In other words, the bug I mentioned might not be in the new release.

By Jake Dominguez, Flight Leader on Monday, August 09, 1999 - 1:36 pm:

Oh yeah! Now I understand. Well, I hope somebody else decides to join in our discussion. TIE Fighter is really one of my favorite games. I used to play it so much I scratched the CD beyond recognition. :-) Now every other mission freezes the game. I really should buy another one. I'm really surprised no one besides us ever posts to this board.

By Cougar 2, formerly Cougar Leader on Monday, August 09, 1999 - 1:55 pm:

Yeah, me too.

By Alpha 1, formerly Jake Dominguez on Monday, August 09, 1999 - 2:35 pm:

So, have any favorite missions? It's been a while
since I last played so if you don't mind describing
it, I can't remember the mission numbers. My favorite is the start of battle 4, I think. Harkov tries to kill you and is revealed as a traitor. I like to see how many of Harkov's forces I can take down before I head home.

(By the way, why the demotion to the two slot? Is Vader flying with you?)

By Cougar Leader, back at his old job, misinterpreting Alpha 1's on Tuesday, August 10, 1999 - 6:44 am:

I think my favourite part is all of Battle 7, when you destroy the last of Harkov's forces and find out that Zaarin is defecting.

Don't care much for the expansion pack missions, though. Is it just me, or is it some un-written rule that expansion pack missions must be more of a pain in the a** than the originals?

By Rogue 5, formerly Alpha 1 but defected after the Battle of Endor on Tuesday, August 10, 1999 - 1:31 pm:

I honestly don't know, I guess the designers must think you're bored with the original missions
and want more of a challenge. Personally I think the designers of new games would do well to hang around discussion forums like this one to get ideas about what the public actually wants.

By Cougar Leader on Wednesday, August 11, 1999 - 1:12 pm:

Amen to that, Rogue 5.

That's cool, except Zaarin didn't defect. He still wants to crush the Rebellion. He just thinks the Emperor is too weak and wants to take over the Empire.

By Rogue 5 on Wednesday, April 04, 2001 - 4:03 pm:

It's a nice explanation for why the Empire was so fragmented after the Battle of Endor. Some novels suggest that after Palpatine died, the evil "Core" of the Empire disappeared, and so the Empire ceased to be an effective force, but this also helps explain it. Now if they would just make this game canonical.

BTW, I just started playing TIE Fighter again after quite a long absence. What a blast! This game is so much fun. Better, I think, in some respects, than X-Wing Alliance, which I also love.

By Sven of Nine, a.k.a. Rogue 68 who likes his lowly position a lot, thank you very much on Monday, May 28, 2001 - 4:04 pm:

A few points:

1) If you're goping to post things, please let us know if they are spoilers, i.e. if they reveal things about the plot. People still play these for the first time, and have yet to reach the later stages. Just be considerate, that's all!

2) SPOILER? :) I can't get the gold medal for the TIE Defender training missions - it's that one where you need to capture a few transports including a Corellian and they fly away!

3) Great game, especially the 3D-enhamced version. Possibly better than X-Wing in some respects. And, best of all, Guy Siner (Lt. Gruber from "Allo Allo") is your flight trainer!

By Rogue 5 on Monday, May 28, 2001 - 8:38 pm:

Well, SPOILY, I guess...

For the TIE-Defender training mission, try putting all your shield energy into engines to beat the CORTS before they hype out. Always try to hit the Corellian transports on the broad side; Shooting those things edgewise is tough. Can't remember if you have missiles on this mission or not, but if so, use missiles to bring its shields down as soon as you can get a clear lock. Makes your job a whole lot easier. Make sure the transports get clear of the station before you launch your missiles. Otherwise they might hit the station. And if you don't have time to get a missile lock, just aim the best you can and dumb-fire the missiles into the transport. No more than 3 missiles per CORT. Then finish up with ions. Hope this helps...

By Sven of Nine, a.k.a. Rogue 68 on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 4:40 pm:

Is it worth using the beam weapon on the CORTS, or should I channel it all to the engines and hope my aim is good?

Thanks for the tips, Rogue 5!

By Rogue 5 on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 11:16 am:

You mean the tractor? Not really, unless you can tractor the CORTS before they get on their exit vector. It does no good to keep the CORTS from turning when all they need is to go straight really fast to get away. No, channeling your beam to the engines is the way to go.

Once again, started playing after a loooong time. Still love it.
