Good Ideas For PC Games

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: PC Games: The Damp Basement: Good Ideas For PC Games
By Mike Ram on Monday, May 17, 1999 - 7:26 pm:

1.Metal Gear Solid?
2.Star Trek: Dominion (Or a similar Star Trek first person shooter like Half-Life or Quake 2)?
3.Instead of Perfect Dark for the N64, how about the PC instead?

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Tuesday, May 18, 1999 - 6:00 am:

1. Hmmm. Unfortunately, it was made in Japan where PC's are not popular games machines.
2. There is a DS9 game coming out some time soon (Millenium?) where you can control Sisko or Worf. It will be 3rd person though. There is Klingon Honor Guard.

By Ben Jackson (Bjackson) on Tuesday, May 18, 1999 - 6:47 am:

THE MATRIX GAME! ROCK! It would have to be a FPS(First-Person Shooter). Imagine, jumping five stories up, running on walls, bullets moving so slow, you can stand in front of them for seconds and step away unharmed. and not to mention KUNG-FU! heck yah! at least a mod for Q2 or Half-Life. There are some in development. Yes!

By Anonymous on Tuesday, May 18, 1999 - 1:55 pm:

My idea is a DS9 game set in the time frame of the Dominion war. The player would get to take command (and control of course!) of the Defiant in battle against the Dominion. I know this kind of sounds like Wing Commander all over again, but if the player could look at the big picture and pick his battles to join that would be cool!

I write this from my BIG disappointment of Starfleet Academy. Anybody who tries to defend that is a bonehead.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Wednesday, May 19, 1999 - 11:59 am:

There is a new game coming out called Armada- no Dominion, but Borg, Klingons and Romulans. the Defiant and EE are in there. It's more of a C&C style game than Starfleet Academy though- It's 2D, but with 3d graphics- not quite sure how that will come off though. Also coming soon is Insurrection.

By Mike Ram on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 11:10 pm:

I meant to say a game LIKE Metal Gear Solid, not MGS itself. ALthough that game was cool, I beat it 3 times and found all the secrets in only 2 weeks...school weeks at that...and I'm not even that good at video games!!!
I meant to say that the people who made MGS should make a similar game for the PC-except longer and with the PC's capabilities to pump it up. OK, now I'm rambling too much!!!

By D. Stuart on Monday, May 24, 1999 - 7:56 pm:

They released a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine game for the Sega Genesis not too long ago. I scurried to a nearby video rental store in which display cases of the 3DO, Playstation, GameBoy, Super NES, Sega Genesis, and Sega Saturn game systems could be found and played the game. Goodness gracious, what an utter waste of gaming development and the acquisition of rights to brand the game with the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine title with the inclusion of its corresponding characters. It is relentlessly exasperating and imperilous as you--Capt. Benjamin Sisko--squander about in search of saboteurs. I found myself striving to confront someone, no matter if it be a fellow crew member or a legitimate enemy. And when I ultimately located an enemy, I had immediately sustained a laser emission from a standard phaser and was basically incapable of defusing any of the explosives planted all throughout the space station. Furthermore, there was nothing captivating in regard to this particular game. I would streak down the main corridor and notice a Bajoran poised before Quark's bar and consequently attempt to interact with the character, but to no avail. Even the graphics were lacking. If they do in fact release another game pertaining to the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series, I hope they shall improve these unavoidable flaws.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 11:02 am:

Sega Genesis? I have never heard of that? Was it an early Saturn or something.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 11:58 am:

No, it was the 16-bit Sega system. I think it was called the Mega Drive or Master System in other parts of the world. It was a direct competitor of the Super Nintendo.

By Matt Pesti on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 5:27 pm:

Actually, The Master sysdem was an early 8 bit system. I agree with you though, any game whitch has terrorist kidnapping Kai Opeaka is a waste of time. If you want a good startrek game, look up Civilization 2 on Yahoo and you will find a decent mod pack for that game.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 8:24 pm:

Well, whatever. Can't say I've ever had one (child of Nintendo), but I've seen them mentioned. Just wasn't sure which was which.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Wednesday, May 26, 1999 - 11:49 am:

It was the Mega Drive here. (the UK)

By Mark Bowman on Monday, May 31, 1999 - 9:53 pm:

I would like to see a good 3d game based on
DS9, that of course dosen't require Winbloze
95/98. The station should be detailed as realisticly
as possible, and no cutting corners such
as having unopenable doors with nothing but
"void space" behind them (I've seen this all to often).
I would really like to see interactive NPCs
(non player characters) and the game being
a kind of RPG that is not tedius, with 3d fps
elements mixed in with it. Ofcourse this
game should allow text commands, and have a
Quake like command line, and beable to log
what commands you type, and what you say and do
in the game.

By Anonymous on Friday, July 30, 1999 - 6:52 am:

they have a game like that!! it's called harbinger, it's a murder investagation!!

By nitpicker on Friday, July 30, 1999 - 8:16 am:

I wish there was an intelligent Star Trek Game out there for the PC I bought StarFleet Academy and I wound up in battle every single mission (despite Sulu saying that they weren't testing my combat skills). I guess the general populace wants just that mind numbing point and shoot. (there is only one good Star Trek game that I have played, it was for the Nintendo)

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, July 30, 1999 - 11:08 am:

You're not talking about that horrible "Future's Past" thing, are you? Or the Starfleet Academy for the Super NES that came out way before the PC version did?

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Saturday, July 31, 1999 - 3:09 am:

nitpicker- currently there is Birth of the Federation, which is a bit buggy, but soon Starfleet Command is released, a much improved space combat game. There are also two C&C type strategy games coming at some point, Armada and New Worlds. Voyager: Elite Force is a 1st person game, which originally used the Quake 3 engine, but apparently that wasn't powerful enough for them! DS9: The Fallen, is a 3rd person action game, where you can play Sisko, Worf, or Kira (and it makes a difference to the game).

Mark- ur, are you alive? Do you no how much time it would take to make that? Doesn't require Windoze? What do you want it to run in then? DOS?

What you want is a Quake mod, not a Star Trek game.

And anonymous? Have you played Harbinger, and/or actually read Mark's post? The only thing in common is that it runs in DOS, and is on DS9.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Saturday, July 31, 1999 - 6:12 pm:

Ed- there are several possibilities other than DOS, such as Linux, BeOS, and other variants. (Obligatory snicker.) Yeah, right. Actually, they could write one for the Mac OS (market share 12% and rising) and it would probably do okay. We like games to be released in the Wintel world first, though, to weed out the garbage.

By nitpicker on Saturday, July 31, 1999 - 7:58 pm:

Ed- I understand that some games coming out will be much better to the Star Trek universe... I just wish they had been made already. I have heard about BOF but I don't know how well I'll accept the game b/c it covers the entire span of the Federation but it only uses TNG technology (I understand that this is extremely obsessive but I am nitpicker :-))

Well the nintendo game that I was talking about is: Star Trek 25th Anniversary made by Ultra games for the ORIGINAL NES

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Saturday, July 31, 1999 - 8:54 pm:

Oy, that's old! Wasn't that the one that dealt at least partly with the Iotians from "A Piece of the Action?"

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 4:37 am:

Yeah, but the Mac is pretty small in other parts of the world (here in the UK, it's rare to find them as home computers, although they are used a lot in offices, especially for graphic design).

And I am aware of Linux etc., but I'm just jealous of the massive user base for them, so I ignore them. ;-)

Actually 25th Anniversary is surprising playable (play Generations for ten minutes, and then tell me 25th isn't great :-))

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 11:19 am:

I am aware of the small worldwide market share. However, since it does not directly affect me in any way, I choose to ignore it.

It might surprise you to learn that Linux outsold copies of any other OS in Japan.

I never said it wasn't playable. Just that it was old. (If I could find a decent ROM of it, I'd give it a try.)

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 12:40 pm:

Actaully, I was referring to the PC version, which may or may not be similar. You can get that ans the sequel- Judgement Rites for about a tenner (well worth it, as is another in the same range, X-Wing and Tie Fighter)

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 12:59 pm:

Oh. Yeah. I have a demo of 25th Anniversary around here somewhere, but I have never seen a Mac version available for sale (although there must be one, if I have a demo.)

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 2:19 pm:

How similar is the NES game out of interest?

Actually, I just remembered that X-Wing and Tie Fighter recently got released in a box set, with improved graphics and sound, along wiht 14 missions from X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter for £30

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 2:33 pm:

I noticed that too. Unfortunately Lucasarts hasn't noticed that there's actually a market for Mac games now, so I haven't gotten it. (Their last few releases sucked, so they didn't do well, so they haven't released anything since August of 97.) If I had the money, I'd go to CompUSA and get me one of these $200 (post-$6 or 700 rebate) PCs and use it just for games. Get me a Voodoo3 (which actually would cost more than the system) and some extra RAM (because 64 megs is never enough) and I'd never leave my room again. But I like my iMac too much. Plus I don't have the $600 or so it would take to create the system described above.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shortly after we got our Mac in 1994, we bought
the full version of 25th Anniversary of startrek.
It wasn't a real bad game either (though I am more
into Doom and Solstice/Mystic Towers type games).
Strangly, the demo version for the PC was listed
as "unplayable", whilele mac version was. Anyway,
the game was good, but unfortunately, the original
disks got courupted and we gave the Mac away
about a year ago :|

By B.F. on Thursday, September 30, 1999 - 4:59 pm:

Can anyone tell me if Star Trek Academy is any good? I saw it at BestBuy the other day and almost purchased it... however I didn't want to until I know how good of a game it is. I'm really anticipating ST:Armada and New Worlds -- Insurrection and Voyager look excellent also.

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, August 01, 2000 - 10:18 am:

Star Trek Academy is very good. However I feel there's too many intergalatic battles and not enough interaction with the other members of your "crew" There are no "away missions" either.

I'd like to see a "Star Trek" game where you can beam down and solve puzzles with realistic looking graphics....sort of like the "Generations" PC game, only better.

By Mark Bowman on Friday, August 04, 2000 - 12:57 am:

Make sure the game has a console (command
line interface) , and that
everything can be manipulated by it (no clipping,
polygons, etc.) The console is one of the best parts pf the game

By MarkN on Monday, August 07, 2000 - 5:19 am:

A good idea would've been for Nocturne to have the same sort of first person perspective as games like Rainbow Six and Unreal, so that the player can aim better and not waste so much ammo sometimes.

By Peter on Thursday, August 24, 2000 - 9:50 am:

Try Voyager Elite Force, MarkN. It looks a lot like what you want, and it has the Quake 3 Engine.

Peter.

By MarkN on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 - 12:57 am:

Gamespot.com has several previews from this year's E3. Check 'em out.

By Sven of Nine, answering the call of sci-fi fans everywhere on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 - 12:47 pm:

People above have mentioned Star Trek and Star Wars.

Isn't it about time a commercial publisher and a suitable developer finally put two and two together?

(OK, so you can technically get unofficial "Star Trek vs Star Wars" mods for games such as Homeworld and Total Annihilation, but how about an official use of the licences?)

By Sven of Nine again on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 - 1:04 pm:

I mean, if they can do an Aliens vs Predator game (and, indeed, a superb sequel game AND a planned movie) then why not Trek vs Wars?
