This game /2{ROCKS!!!!!!!!}

/-{Just my humble opinion :-)}

By Jack B. on Thursday, June 03, 1999 - 4:29 pm:

Oops. I was trying to use the formatting to make "ROCKS" really big, then make the second part small.

By Nathan K. on Thursday, June 03, 1999 - 9:23 pm:

The slashes went the wrong way...

By Jack B. on Wednesday, June 09, 1999 - 8:36 pm:

Thanks. I'll remember that.

By Tom B. on Monday, June 21, 1999 - 12:37 pm:

Why did Aldaris (leader of the Protoss) attack Zeratul after he started working with Infested Kerrigan in Brood Wars? How did Kerrigan mind control Raszagalin in Brood Wars?
Is it just me or does Artanis ••••? Wrose yet, he becomes the leader of the Protoss! how can you have someone so dumb be the leader of the Protoss?
How come Inercepters take so long to build? All the are is a little one man ship. They take about as long as a Wrath to build. Inercepters shouldn't take so long if they are so bad.other then those little things this is one of the best games I have ever played.

By Mike Ram on Sunday, November 07, 1999 - 11:12 pm:

I just got this game and I can't pass the early Terran mission where you have to get Data Disks from the Confederates while keeping Jimmy Raynor alive...

Help?

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Monday, November 08, 1999 - 11:55 am:

Er is this the level where you walk around the base? You have to use teleports to get to the data disks (I think you have to stand on one of the flashing terminals(similar to teleports)).

By Mike Ram on Monday, November 08, 1999 - 1:27 pm:

Thanks Ed, but all of the teleports lead to the same closed rooms. How do I get into the room with the data disks?

By Tom B. on Wednesday, March 22, 2000 - 8:43 am:

I walked around and hoped. I never use stim packs.

By MarkN on Saturday, July 15, 2000 - 2:34 am:

I was at Costco yesterday and they have a 2 game package of Starcraft and Broodwar, I think it is, for $25 and I was thinking of trying them out. I'm not a huge gamer but a casual one, but I was wondering what's the difference in a game where you see everything from a skyview as opposed to first person, other than the obvious asthetics, of course. What I mean is, do these games play and look better for the most part cuz the backgrounds and characters are much smaller and aren't as much graphicically intense as an FPS, or is that a hindrance or is there not really any appreciable difference at all, or what? There's certainly a lot more ground area to view as you play, too. Are these types of games also more or less fun to play than FPS, generally? I've been sort of wary of trying one out before but for that price how can one go wrong?

One last question, and please forgive my ignorance. Is there a particular name for games that you view from above only, like these two? If you're a shooter it's called a First Person Shooter, so what's the type of game that Starcraft is, or is there one?

By T.B. on Saturday, August 05, 2000 - 1:11 pm:

Buy this game. It is hard and fun. For $25 I would have gotten it without asking about it. Just don't use codes. If you do the game will be be bad.

By MarkN on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 - 4:04 am:

What codes? Cheat codes? I still haven't gotten the gameset (which also includes the strategy guide and a second book) but I still think I will. How long does the game take? It looks like one would have to have tons of time and patience to play it, but that could contribute to the fun of playing it, too.

By MarkN on Sunday, October 22, 2000 - 5:55 am:

WOWOWOW!!! This game is AWESOME!!! Yes, I finally got that set with Broodwar and their strat guides, and so far have only played StarCraft but it was for several hours, and man, oh, man is it great! Not a lot of detail with the characters but then they are very tiny. It's still pretty cool. I finally got this set cuz Costco only had 2 left that I could see and the other box was a bit smashed up so I got the better of the two. I'm up to Mission 5. The game takes a bit of getting used to but that's ok. I was doing lots of exploring and learning with it. I can't wait to play as the Zergs and Protoss and Broodwar, too. Ok, I'll stop gushing over this game but I tell ya I'm glad I got it.

By Tom on Sunday, February 11, 2001 - 9:00 pm:

I think you may know this by now, but Zerg ••••! Also, Brood Wars will take you at least 2 hours per mission. It took me 1 and a half hours using codes! Got to go, Simpsons.

By MarkN on Monday, February 12, 2001 - 2:56 am:

I haven't finished this game cuz I eventually got some others, so this one's been removed from my system for now. I'll give it another try later on. I really need a much bigger HD to accomodate all the many games I do have. As it is right now I've only got a measly 8gb HD. And still no new 3D card.

By Tom B on Thursday, March 01, 2001 - 8:46 am:

StarCraft is about the only game I can play on my computer.

By MarkN on Sunday, March 04, 2001 - 1:02 am:

Why's that, Tom? What's wrong?

By Tom B. on Friday, March 16, 2001 - 7:24 pm:

My computer is really bad, but I don't mind, I've got a PS2!

By MarkN on Saturday, March 17, 2001 - 7:18 pm:

You mean you were actually able to get one of those things? How is it, in graphics and gameplay? How much were you ripped off for it? They were supposed to be only going for $300. Please tell us everything you can about it.

By Anonymous on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 - 3:25 pm:

MarkN, I've got a lousy 6gb HD! I love Starcraft, but its waaaay too easy to win as Protoss if you have the Dark Archons, or as the Zerg if you're only fighting Humans. (I have the set (Brood War expansion & both books)

Has anyone played it on Battlenet? Haven't tried it that way yet, myself....

By Makgraf on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 8:35 pm:

Tom B: No offense but all your "nits" are wrong. Aldaris attacked Zeratul because he was working with Infested Kerrigen! Aldaris didn't believe her story of "Oh I'm good again" (for good reasons) and thought that Zeratul was aligning himself with the forces of darkness. (Remember Aldaris never liked the Dark Templar) I always thought that Raszagalin had been infested by the zerg the same as Kerrigen had been. That's why she was talking all funny. (And was evil) Aldaris isn't "dumb" he's just very conservative and doesn't like changes or new things. Even if he was what's so unbelievable about a dumb person rising to power (George Bush springs to mind)
Wraiths are actually the real "little one man ship(s)", Interceptors are robotic. Why is it unrealistic that they take around the same time to built? You have an entire shipyard working on producing that wraith. Interceptors are built onboard another ship that has to specialize in other things. Also Interceptors would require advanced cybernetics and miniturized weapons. Sometimes building small is as hard as building big.

By Douglas Nicol on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 7:25 am:

Starcraft and Brood War are available together in a pack in the UK for £9.99.

By Josh M on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 2:04 pm:

The Battlechest is $20 here in the States.

As for MarkN's very old question, I believe that the games where you play as one person running around shooting with their perspective is considered an first person shoother while games like Starcraft, Warcraft, C&C would be considered RPGs. Or am I wrong?

-Josh M

These types of games are generally called Real-Time Strategy (RTS). RPGs are generally much more personal story based (think Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, etc.) as opposed to the impersonal battlefield basis for RTS.

By Electron on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - 5:05 pm:

Or did MarkN mean "isometric"?

By Broken Aero (Brokenaero) on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 - 11:45 pm:

I know you're not supposed to revive dead threads, but reading through these makes me look over the past decade in awe. MarkN made a comment about his 8GB HD, and Tom B. mentioned his *new* PS2. It just amazes me the technological breakthroughs we've seen since then. Counting my two external HDs, I have nearly 2TB of space, and I know people with far more than that. I remember six years ago when I thought my 60GB HD on my laptop was a lot. It's off topic, but it still amused me.
