Starfleet Command

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: PC Games: The Games: Star Trek Games: Starfleet Command
By Nathan K. on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 11:50 am:

I'm really looking forward to this one. At last, a computer game based on Star Fleet Battles! And they even kept the Kzinti, Gorn, and Hydrans. (I'd think it would be tempting to change them to more familiar Trek races, but it just wouldn't be SFB.)

Any Star Fleet Battles fans out there?

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 2:21 pm:

Kzinti? I don't think they made it.

By Nathan K. on Sunday, August 01, 1999 - 2:23 pm:

Oh. Was it Lyrans instead?

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 9:48 am:

Yeah- I think there were some licensing problems with the Kzinti (weren't they the Larry Niven alien that he used when he wroked on the animated aeries?)

By Nathan K. on Monday, August 02, 1999 - 1:08 pm:

They were, and I imagine that's why they don't appear. I got them mixed up with the Lyrans because both are cat-like races.

By MarkN on Saturday, July 15, 2000 - 2:13 am:

Wow! No one's posted here for almost a whole year! Well, I got this game (along with Nocturne) yesterday and was wondering who's played it by now and what you think of it? Is it hard, easy, fun, disappointing, what?

By Nathan K. on Saturday, July 15, 2000 - 4:30 pm:

I haven't played the game much lately, but my feelings about it are mixed. The structure of the game on a small scale is good; the graphics and sound really help the atmosphere, and basing the game on well-established SFB rules help to make the battles exciting and balanced. Also, the control interface is superb.

However, the game structure on a large scale is disappointing. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the missions you encounter. It seems like no matter what you do, half of the missions are against the Orions, and they get tiring quickly. What happens on the map screen with the empires seems to have little bearing on what missions you get. You can cross into Romulan space and have a mission fighting the Klingons.

It annoys me that the policy for Star Trek games seems to be to release an incomplete game with a lot of bugs and to try to fix it with patches. It would be better to delay release until you have the game you want and only use patches for non-essential things.

But it's still a neat game. It always takes longer to describe the negatives than the positives.

By Nathan K. on Saturday, July 15, 2000 - 4:37 pm:

By the way, the makers of SFC are working on a second chapter, which is supposed to include the Interstellar Concordium, an SFB race which tries to enforce peace by keeping the other races under its control, and a race which relies heavily on drones (or missiles). Because of the licensing problems mentioned above, they will be called not the Kzinti but the Mirak Star League. The game could also include the Tholians, but that's not certain.

It sounds neat! Hopefully they can take the opportunity to polish the game a bit and make it a real winner.

By MarkN on Sunday, July 16, 2000 - 4:10 am:

Is that the Gold Edition. I bought seven more games on Saturday and saw that version, which isn't mine. Do you know if it's all that much different, Nathan?

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 4:18 pm:

I got my step-grandfather the orion Pirates expansion for Starfleet Command II Empires at War for Christmas. I hope they DO bring in the Tholians at some point, Neo and Archeo. I also want the Seltorians, the Andromedans, and the WYN.

It's been almost 9 years since anyone posted here-am I the only one playing these games??
And if not--does anyone know where I can find advice on a couple of missions in Orion Pirates??

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Wednesday, July 07, 2010 - 12:09 am:

I take it that's a no-too bad, I'm now up to three I can't figure out.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Thursday, July 15, 2010 - 11:19 pm:

Hello-is there anyone out there???? Anyone at all???

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 - 1:38 am:

Well, at least I know why it's so dead here-I come looking for help, and all I get is 4 people(including the moderator(?)) stopping in out of thier busy day to mock me for it.

Thanks a lot-and may someone do the same for you someday.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 - 2:02 am:

Easy, John, it's called humour. If anything, I read it as a sympathetic response in light of the fact that clearly nobody here is playing the game and so can't offer advice. Chill out, man!

By Josh M (Joshm) on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 - 10:27 am:

Try these.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 - 3:28 am:

To Josh M: Thank you for the links-as I just picked up a used machine for older games(the first Starfleet Command does not work with Vista), and plan to play again-these should be useful.

Do you have anything on Starfleet Command 2 Orion Pirates(this is the game I mentioned in my first post)??

Again I thank you.

To Callie: Are you the same Callie who's chewed me out over on the Doctor Who boards-small world isn't it??

I may have overreacted-but I don't think so.

You notice I didn't respond on the first one-even though the one word message is harsh and shows no hint of humor at all-just someone stopping in to be rude.

It was when-in slightly more than 6 hours-3 "wits"(including the closest thing this group has to a moderator) stop in with "jokes" that might have been funny--if they had come in before the first "No". As it was it did,and still does-felt like pure mockery. There is neither humor nor sympathy there-just a mean-spirited kick in the teeth. At least that's how it came across-so yes I got mad,and yes I am still upset on the topic.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Monday, July 26, 2010 - 6:05 pm:

John, my own comment was meant humorously and I believe the others were as well. Your characterizing them as mean spirited does not necessarily make them so. However, regardless of whether or not they were meant negatively, I'll remove them, since they don't further the discussion any.

I do apologize for the delay in responding to this. Somehow I missed the additional posts when I checked in earlier this week.

A general note to everyone. Moderatorship of this board is still available if anyone would like to take over. Contact Phil the Chief to apply. Be sure to put 'For the Chief' in the subject line so he'll know it isn't spam.
