Atari 2600

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Console Video Games: Other: Atari 2600

The BEST "Star Trek" simulation was called
"Stellar Track" by SEARS (TM)

It had a 9 x 9 grid in which you could
manuver the "Enterprise" in alignment
with the "Klingon" ship.

There were even spacedocks to dock at for
repairs and "load up" on weapons

You even got "ranked" at the end of the game
from "Ensign" to "Admiral"

The worst game was put out by Commavid.

It was called "Room of Doom"

The graphics were really bad!

The man you controlled looked like a tea kettle

My favorite games for the Atari 2600 were:

Megamania

Demon Attack

Kaboom!

Yars' Revenge

Solaris (NOT the mind-numbingly boring George Clooney movie)

Centipede (I never played Millipede)

Jr. Pac-Man (a hundred times better than the original!)

Snoopy & The Red Baron (my most favorite!)

Thanks to the Angry Video Game Nerd, I now know of many classic Atari games that I am SO glad that I never played!

And how can we forget the most infamously bad game of them all, ET. Of course it was a poorly designed game with wonky controls and the difficulty settings had one at Pathetically Easy and two at Beyond Nintendo Hard. However a more preventable issue on the players' part was the fact that you needed to actually read the instruction manual to know what to do. I suspect that Atari 2600 players were so used to figuring things out as they play (since most Atari 2600 games were dead simple) that reading the instruction manual never occurred to them. :P

Well, I actually played ET, and I did read the manual. I always have, with any game I've ever owned, or rented (if it came with it, that is). So I won the game, but it has ZERO replay value. I hate games like that, I'd rather play the ones where every time you play them, they're fun and not overly difficult, and you can keep going back to them many times over. A good example of the games I had that had great replay value were the Streets Of Rage trilogy for the Sega Genesis.

Noah Antwiler of the "Spoony Experiment" website has actually done a review of the infamous ET game. And he had just had dental surgery, so he was in a lot of pain and was a bit loopy on the meds he had taken. It was a real funny video, though.

Also, James Rolfe, the aformentioned Angry Video Game Nerd, is currently working on a movie where he will review ET at some point within it. He has hinted at doing it in the past few years, and finally announced that he will do so in the AVGN film, which is currently in pre-production.

I look forward to that!

BTW, Noah's URL is, of course, www.spoonyexperiment.com.
